Leadership has never been something on the forefront of my mind when thinking about social work. For me, it’s been an interesting concept to think about in a meaningful way, and how to connect leadership and social work in my current role as an employee and as a graduate student. While I am not inclined to think of myself as a leader, nor do I necessarily strive to be one, looking at social work from this new perspective gives me the chance to grow as a student and as a practitioner in my current position and beyond. Reflecting on leadership as a graduate student touches on a couple of thoughts for me. Transformational leadership has central principals called the four “I’s.” Idealized influence is charisma, which incites admiration (Fisher, 2005). Being accountable, passionate about organizational goals and being personally involved are examples of idealized influence (Fisher, 2005). Intellectual Stimulation involves creative and innovative problem solving with employees/team members (Fisher, 2005). Individual Consideration is a leaders ability to get to know and treat employees/team members with respect, while Inspirational Motivation is the ability to build the confidence levels of employees/team members and move them towards action (Fisher, 2005). A simple Internet search led to examples of transformational leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who I feel no one can really compare to. It was interesting to see the others who popped up as well, such as Steve Jobs, Oprah, and yes, even Katniss. Katniss is not even a real person, however, the Hunger Games book series created a strong female character that encompasses the principals of transformational leadership. Social workers have play an important role in the community. They work hard in order to assist those in need. Social Work defines leadership as “the capacity to work creatively, constructively, and effectively with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to promote social justice, catalyze social change, and address individual and social problems. Leaders accomplish this by inspiring vision, offering direction, and supporting individual and collective action in order to obtain mutually valued results.” ("Social Work
Transformational leadership describes a leader moving followers beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration. Transformational leaders are change agents. They influence the mission and objectives to make way for a brighter future for the organization. Followers are motivated to do more than is originally expected because of their feelings of trust and respect for the leader.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
I chose Transformational Leadership in Social Work as my elective course, because I wanted to learn about ethical leadership and about the state of contemporary nonprofits specializing in human services. I also wanted to challenge myself. For example, when I volunteered to describe the steps required to register the non-profit agency with the IRS and the state of Texas, I struggled at first, but during the process of researching the topic, I was becoming more confident in my ability to successfully complete initially unfamiliar task. I believe that by leaving our comfort zone, and becoming open to learning something new, we also transform ourselves.
This paper is about a reflection on a class interview for a senior social worker. The teacher gave every student ten minutes for this interview. The students did not have an idea of what their situation was about until couple minutes before the interview. My learning from this week reading, class discussions, and lecture was informed that AOP is not a resolution to the injustice that continue to perpetuate in our community. However, Sakamot asked a remarkable question whether AOP can be anti-oppressive. This question is challenging and alarming because my impression is that social workers should practice using AOP theory. Leadership is a skill that staff members, management and other individuals can obtain. How you use your skill will determine the success you will have in life. Reading “The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle” on how to become a servant leader has influence me on so many levels. The essence of leadership stated by Mr. Hunter, should be influence and built upon serving, sacrificing, and seeking the good of those being led. Whether you are a teacher, mother or father, and in the professional world anybody can lead in the right direction.
Transformational leadership is one of the most popular leadership styles. According to Kendrick (2011), “Transformational leadership involves four factors: 1. idealized influence, 2. inspirational motivation, 3. intellectual stimulation, and 4. individual consideration.” These four factors make transformational leadership have an impact on followers. The goal of transformational leadership is to cause a positive change in individuals, help motivate them, and develop a leader within each individual.
Working with others and improving own learning and performance are highly essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how well I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
The social service agency that I visited is known as As-Salaam PPIS Family Support Centre. The agency has programmes for mainly Muslim women who are in grief and loss from either the death of their husbands or from the divorce, as well as programmes that targets children from such families. The 4 core programmes that the agency offers are case work and counselling, SALAAM which is a support programme for grieving children and adolescents, M.A.W.A.R which is for single mothers, as well as public education on single parent issues as well as to promote support from community. I will be talking a lot more on my thoughts and experience during the visit rather than the programme itself.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power. Based on the definition of leadership, anyone can be considered a leader as long as they have the ability to influence people to achieve a particular result or goal which benefits the organization or group as a whole.
