I started working as a Social Work Assistant in a Welsh child protection team in August 2014 until I gained my social work qualification in October 2014 and started practicing as a Social Worker. The team that I work in gains a lot of its staff intake from newly qualified Social Workers and it appears to be well geared to developing and supporting people who may be unexperienced in social work, but have a wide and varied set of skills from other arenas. My position as a newly qualified social worker initially entailed working solely with Child in Need cases, giving me the opportunity to gain a better understanding of my role. Morrison and Wonnacott (2010) state that these aspects are fundamental factors in supervision as they encourage me to be clear about my role, help me to develop my practice and should impact positively on the families that I work with. Research has suggested that quality supervision can lead to job satisfaction, organisational commitment and reduced staff turnover (Carpenter et al, 2012). These factors have also been complemented by my second and third year placements where I completed case work and child protection duties where I started to learn how the child protection process is tackled nationally, locally and also by the individual. In addition to this, my second and third year placements were in a statutory setting so I already knew how many of the local authority’s systems operated and also many of the other agencies concerned with working with families and children in the area. I also formed relationships with some other professionals meaning we could dispense with any period of introduction. These factors help me to achieve what I consider to be good outcomes for the families I work with or to achieve what the local authority considers to be in the best interests of the child. I use reflection and both informal and formal supervision to look at my practice and to identify areas where there may be deficits or areas of good practice that I can pass onto colleagues through peer support and team
Nurses are able to reflect upon their past experiences of work and build and improve this ensuring their level of competence and skills is in line with NMC guidelines. Improving the quality of care provided to patients is an ongoing process and requires practitioners to contently reflect and improve their practice. (Howatson-Jones, 2013) One way in which reflection can improve the quality of care is through the use of professional supervision, as stated by (Daly, Speedy and Jackson, 2014) a focus for supervision should be enhancing a nurse’s skills and ability to reflect on practice. This essay aims to explore the characteristics that make a good quality social work assessment in child care. Martin (2010) stated that there was “no single agreed definition of social work assessment.” Coulshed and Orme (2006, p24) did not offer a formal definition but they described assessment as “…a basis for planning what needs to be done to maintain, improve or bring about change in the person, the environment or both.” According to the Maclean and Harrison (2015) good assessments must be “purposeful and timely.” This is because practitioners need to be clear about why they are carrying out assessments and what it is they wish to achieve at the end of that assessment.
Regular reflection and self-appraisal are an important part of any supervision and you should make the supervisee aware that this will be an expectation of their supervision. These reflections should include their experiences and also a reflection of how their practice might make the client feel and analysis of their work and its implications. Wherever possible, ask the person to assess their own performance. Reflection in a supervisory relationship requires a foundation of honesty and trust. The goal is to create an environment in which people do their best thinking—one characterized by safety, calmness and support. As Manager it is important to have the ability to support and encourage the supervisee to reflect on their experiences and their practice with the aim of increasing the accuracy of their self-appraisal. Reflective supervision is characterized by active listening and thoughtful questioning by both parties. The role of the supervisor is to help the supervisee to answer her own questions, and to provide the support and knowledge necessary to guide decision-making. In addition, the supervisor provides an empathetic, non-judgmental ear to the supervisee. Working through complex emotions in a “safe place” allows the supervisee to manage the stress she experiences on the job.

Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning.
