Izenberg, N, Human Diseases and Conditions, New York, 2000
Summary
The first main point in the book is about the definition or description of a disease or condition. Whenever a disease is listed, there is a definition/description that soon follows. An example is,”AIDS is the most severe form of disease caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), a virus that damages the immune system, leaving a person open to many life-threatening infections.” (Izenberg 25). After the disease is stated and a new section about that disease or condition starts, the definition is stated.
The second point is information on symptoms and causes. In the section about the disease or condition, the causes and symptoms of that disease are listed. An example of the section describing what the cause of cavities are is, “Cavities, also known as caries, are areas of decay on the teeth that are caused by bacteria.” (Izenberg 186). The symptoms of the disease/condition will also be listed throughout the section.

The third point is diagnosis and treatment.
Each section will describe how to diagnose and treat certain diseases. An example of a section stating how to diagnose and treat a disease is, “The simplest test is a digital rectal exam,” (Izenberg 230) and, “The three main types of treatment for colorectal cancer are surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.” (Izenberg 231). These examples describe how to diagnose and treat the disease.
Branch of Biology
The branch of biology that the book is about is biomedical research. Biomedical research is the study of health and diseases. I know the book is about biomedical research because it describes, in detail, different diseases that can affect a person's health and body.
Significance of the Title
The author chose this title because the book is about different disease that affect the body. I think this is a good title because this book is all about human
diseases. First Impression The most interesting thing in the book is the list of different kinds of diseases and how you can get them, especially how many diseases are caused by DNA. So far, Albinism, Alzheimer's, Astigmatism, Autism, and possibly ADHD. "Genes may play a role in autism," (pg 109). "Alzheimer's disease does not result from any single factor, but rather from a number of factors that combine in different ways for different people. Researchers have identified at least three different genes that appear to cause some of the cases of the rare familial form of the disease," (pg 51). "No one is sure what causes astigmatism. It is usually presented at birth and often is found in many members of the same family. This means that in some cases the trait is inherited, like hair color and eye color," (pg 98). This caught my attention because genes and genetic disorders are what we have been learning about in class for a while and I find it very interesting. Memorable Passage “One of the marvels of the human machinery is how rarely anything goes seriously wrong, and how good the body is at repairing and defending itself. But sometimes the magnitude of an injury or the cleverness or ferocity of a microbial invader is so great that the body is simply overwhelmed. In other cases, just as with non living machines, the body or a part of it breaks down because of age or malfunctions from other causes.” (Izenberg 5) I chose this passage because I think that the human body is so complex and interesting and there is still so much more to learn about it, and I think the passage shows that. Descriptive Response I learned a lot about different diseases that can damage the body severely or can be long term illnesses that people live with. I also learned a lot about how different diseases are contracted. I can use what I learned to have a better understanding for the people who have the diseases I learned about. What I learned affects the world because it can inform people and people can learn more about the different kinds of diseases there are and get a better understanding. Book Recommendation Any person who likes the human body of the health of the human body would be interested in this book. The book includes a lot of different diseases and conditions that affect people. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the human body and different diseases would like this book. What a Reader Could Miss I think if a reader did not read close enough, they could miss a lot of important little details about the different diseases the book covers such as precise vocabulary.
The book jumps to a distressing story about Peter Los in 1970 in West Germany who became ill due to smallpox. After ten days he was hospitalized but medical staff did not realize he had smallpox, which is highly contagious. Preston gives vivid descriptions of the disease and how it ravages the body. Los survived his illness, but caused an epidemic that killed many others that had become exposed to him. “Today, the people who plan for a smallpox emergency can’t get the image of the Meschede hospital out of their minds.
The author starts off his book with a note highlighting the meaning of this book. It is as follows:
In the first chapter of the book we are introduced to one of the main
Since Plagues and Peoples covers several subjects of knowledge, he helps the reader understand key concepts by fully explaining parasitism and its dependence on humans and animals. People in the field of history, which make up a majority of this books audience, would need more insight into epidemiology to grasp its key concepts. It would not be likely for a historian to be knowledgeable in a branch of medical science that deals with the incidence, distribution, and control of disease in populations.
In the beginning, Horton and Freire discuss the format of the book and how they will proceed with their dialogue. They introduce the setting and talk about their perspectives on book writing. This introduction is essential in order for the reader to understand what follows, since this format is not common. The authors do not outline specific sections of the book at the beginning; rather they let the conversation flow in an order that seems natural at that time. Although I feel that the structure of the book seems very confusing to me when I try to recall who was saying what and projects a set clear lack of structure.
He is explaining how information in books is the important part not the book itself. It’s the words in books that matter the most.
of a book a person may want to know what’s the basic outline of the
The different models to health all use different principles. The biomedical model concentrates on the physical and biological aspect of a disease. Doctors and health professionals practice this model. This model is associated with the diagnosis, treatment and cure of the disease. This model evolves as times goes

Have you ever think about anatomy or physiology, or do know what those are meant? As a researcher, I have researched about it and found that it has a lot to do with our body and how it works. Anatomy is a branch in science where individuals study body structure of humans, animals, and any other living things around the world unlike physiology where it has to do with parts that work within living organisms. Physiology is the study of functions and activities of living organisms and their parts, including all its physical and chemical processes. Not only that, but homeostatic, anatomical, and/or medical terminology are the related fields of anatomy and physiology. Homeostasis, anatomical, and/or medical terminology are all of the smaller areas in anatomy and physiology where scientists and doctors have to go through in order for them to cure or prevent our diseases from occurring or getting worse as a result.
Micheal Ondaatje creates meaning and representation in The English Patient, through the structure of his novel. The author portrays the sequence of events in a non-linear fashion to incorporate them as a puzzle-like story. The puzzle is significant because, the reader is constantly unraveling the novels excerpts together. Symbolism is an important aspect of these passages because, it provides a better understanding of the issues related to the novel such as, destruction, identity, escape, unity, and love.
My desire of studying biomedical sciences stems from my sciences interest, as it demonstrates a world not visible to the naked eye, plays a big role in everyday life. science specifically biology and chemistry are stimulating and challenging subjects , over the years of studying them ,my interest has increased because learning things about how our bodies function and how it relates to god’s creation is particularly interesting for me. I also find it very important because I’m Muslim. The biomedical science degree will open for me the door to learn more about the vast field of biology and its branches to a greater depth. I developed my knowledge in the science field by taking support classes in the lab at school; I was fascinated by how the body can function in different circumstances and the complexity of DNA, different organisms, chemical reactions, and also very importantly the mathematical aspect which gives me the chance to develop and use my logic and it inform me to new ways of looking at given problems.
Whenever asked what my favourite subject is, Biology has been, and will always be, my only answer. It was bewildering to compare my body to a machine working harmoniously. The digestive system, the respiratory system and the circulatory system are coordinating with each other right underneath my skin. Realising that the 'blue lines' visible beneath the flesh of my hands are actually veins carrying deoxygenated blood fueled my desire to know more about how my body functions. To me, it has always been about getting to know my self better.

I believe the title’s meaning is devastating because it shows you what could happen in just sixty minutes. One moment her husband was alive, and then he was gone. Firstly, Mrs. Mallard experiences what women have felt and endured for many generations and it shows how they all rendered into silence because of the tragic accident. Also, this story shows you what can happen to someone in a short period of time and not knowing how the other person feels about you when you are diseased. Therefore, you should live life to the fullest and never take you life for granted because you could be next.
