Communication is an interesting field of study because we learn so much about it in our everyday lives. While in class we took the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension created by Jim McCroskey in the 1970’s. Communication apprehension consists of four parts: group, meeting, dyadic, and public apprehension. Each part relates to how well one does when in a social situation and how comfortable one may be during certain scenarios of social interaction. Through testing one can see how comfortable they feel in different settings. While in a group some people may feel uncomfortable, while I am alright in a group. This study was done in 2007, and from it, I learned that the knowledge gained in past psychological studies doesn’t just get ignored—forever doomed to never make a difference in someone’s life. All the studies listed in the reference section of this paper had some part to play in making this study, and this study in turn added to the collective knowledge of this topic. Even with its faults and limitations, procedures can be improved, and new studies, validating previous results or exploring different variables, would emerge. It is now 2014, and as someone who suffers social anxiety, I know that communicating with others through anonymous Internet chat sites is now recommended by counselors as a viable way of practicing social interaction; and, there are now a great many support group forums to choose from dedicated solely to helping those with social phobias.
To function effectively in today’s society people must communicate with one another. Yet for some individuals communication experiences are so unrewarding that they either consciously or unconsciously avoid situations where communication is required. (McCroskey & Richmond, 1979) The term ‘communication apprehension’ was coined by James McCroskey (1976a) and is defined as “an individual’s level of fear or anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication with another person or persons” (McCroskey, 1984). In the last two decades communication apprehension and related constructs, such as reticence and unwillingness to communicate, have received extensive research and theoretical attention by scholars in communication and psychology. In 1984, Payne and Richmond listed over 1000 entries in a bibliography of publications and papers in this area (Payne & Richmond, 1984). Overwhelmingly the underlying theme of the articles has been the negative effects that these constructs can have on academic and social success. It has been forwarded that two out of ten people suffer some form of communication apprehension (CA). The focus of this paper is on communication apprehension as a construct and on how it affects the behavior and lifestyle of an individual.
This theory has been subject to many articles and studies in the communication and social departments. Indeed, studying this theory can help us understanding human relations in interpersonal communication. Each of us has been one day confronted to uncertainty, whereas in initial encounters, or moving to a new a new place, or beginning a new work.
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.
The Communication Accommodation Theory states when people interact they alter their speech to fit in or accommodate for other. CAT describes the psychological, social, and linguistic behaviors that people exhibit when communicating with each other (Coupland, Coupland, Giles, Henwood, 1988). Each individual has his or her own personality and motivation when involved in a conversation, this attribute are reflected in how the individual speaks, listens and then responds to the other person involved in the conversation. According to this theory, communication between two people can at any time be adjusted by either party in response to actual, perceived, or stereotyped expectations of the other person (Coupland, et al., 1988). This means that either party can change their communication style based on what they feel or pick up on during the conversation. The CAT theory can help understand how humans interact with one another while communicating.
On a daily basis, we come in contact with individuals that we have to communicate with, wither it be for work purposes, educational purposes, or social practices. As active humans we cannot escape the idea of socializing or communication, therefor; we make it a daily routine who we communicate with, how we communicate with them, what we listen to and how we listen it. With this routine habits are formed, some are strengths but others are weaknesses that diminish the communication quality. It is extremely important for individuals to recognize these strengths and weakness within their communication routine. By recognizing their strengths, they are able to improve even further and use their ability to get them closer to goals they may have set for themselves. Recognizing their weaknesses is just as important if not more important.
In the article, the authors seek to investigate communication apprehension among secretarial students. Communication apprehension is an individual’s level of fear or anxiety associated with communication with others (Booth-Butterfield & Thomas, 1995, pp. 1). 39). The syllable of the syllable. I work well in group situations. I always try to encourage all members to participate and contribute. It is interesting to note that in most situations, I tend to be one of the group leaders. I do have a strong personality. Yet I try not to come across as controlling or bossy.
