HABIT 1-----BE PROACTIVE:
That’s almost self explanatory. It means you are in charge of yourself and actions. I’m in charge of me. It means you are taking initiative. You mastered yourself to a certain degree and proactive to choose your response in your path to excellence. Take responsibilities for your excellence.
HABIT 2-----BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND: The end is really your goal----academic excellence. Effectiveness is not just a matter of reaching any goal, but rather of achieving the right goal in bits or blocks. Imagine yourself sitting among many students at your speech and prize giving day, validation or convocation ceremony, and what applause you received as you walk down to the stage to collect a prize of the overall best student.

Your continuous assessments, assignments, and class works are the tools for such measurement. An academic test (or exams) remains one of the most effective, reliable and engaging tools through which academic results can be measured and graded. It is trying to understand where your grades are presently. On the scale of 0---100% where do you fall? Not what your scores supposed to be or what your scores should be, but what your scores are right now. Then trying to understand what kind of scores or grades you want in the next test or examination. The kind of grades you earn now, the kind of grades you want in order to become a high-flyer and the possibility of becoming one can only be accessed through GOAL SETTING. When you set goals, evaluate progress (through testing, e.g. the PQRST reading style), examine results and diagnose academic problems or roadblocks, you are measuring academic progress. It is the first step that leads to taking responsibility of your academic progress and eventually the measures (setting goals) to be taken for improvement. Someone said, if you can’t measure something, you can’t understand it . if you can’t understand it, you can’t control it. If you can’t control it, you can’t improve it. How will you know your loophole? How will you make good use of your God given ability without measuring your performance? Where would your school be during the inter-school (or inter-house) sporting competition without knowing the score of the game? How would the winner emerge? The answer is the fifteenth guidepost—which reads: SET GOALS!
GOALS are the measurement by which reality finds its way to our dreams. Goal setting is a life skill that determines results. Life skills are everything needed for a good life. During Brain Busters meets, there are times that I am in charge of the group I am in and although it is a lot of responsibility, I know that my team is depending on me to help them. Also, on my lacrosse team, my coaches have put me in charge of the rest of the defense players and to tell them where to be and what they should try to do to stop the ball. There are other sports that I play, such as gymnastics, that I am only in charge of myself, but I have found that people look to me for help and to let them know what they could be doing. This can happen by using grades to achieve the desired learning experiences.(Woolfolk, p.589, 2016) From my point of view, I consider that tests should be used to motivate students, otherwise, students would think of tests as a negative part of a school. To learn students need to be engaged (behaviorally, cognitively, and emotionally.) (Woolfolk, p.443, 2016) If students think about tests as an opportunity to observe their learning progress, to ensure that they learn well the material, then their sense of self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation would increase.

By setting goals and measuring their success, employees can able to see where they are going, what they have accomplished and what are their capabilities. Schools will have an objective to meet and will improve what the students learn. Don W. Hooper says that educational systems that use objective standards to measure student achievement are highly effective (146). If schools have goals and they meet the goals students are going to learn. “Schools that set predetermined goals for student success and that monitor progress through standardized testing boost academic performance. ”(Hooper, 146).
When and if students are not prepared for what the 21st century is really like, then they will not be in a good place after they graduate high school. The United States grading system for K-12 public schools are used as a measurement for student achievement levels, determining how much a student has learned based on a letter grade. Grades are typically measured a variety of ways, most commonly by way of: tests, participation, homework, quizzes, papers, presentations and group projects. Since grades reflect a variety of ways to measure a student, grades should be an accurate representation of what a student learns. This may seem the case; however, these components do not adequately measure a student’s capabilities.
What does it mean to be an honors student? The definition of the word honors is, a privilege; student means, someone who has interest in a particular subject. So a honors student is a privileged person who has interest in a particular subject. This can be a contradiction to itself if that who is the honors student does not take that subject studied as a privilege. Being an honors student you have to have a love for that subject, have a personality to fit the obligation, and have skills that suit the subject.
Today, because of the way the grading system is set up, the main focus of most students is to be characterized as a straight A student or to find themselves at the top of their class. Most often this is shown by a series of letters or numbers in a piece of paper, or as it is delivered more recently, in an online website. This is the primary way of measuring a child´s progress through school. Sadly, for many families and students, the grade is the ultimate goal, and the key to their success. Some parents even go as far as rewarding their children for good grades, ascribing a monetary value or some materialistic prize to each good letter, or on the other hand, taking away privileges for each bad one, demonstrating that the knowledge is not what matters in the end, but how well your teacher thought your effort was reflected on a project or how well you can memorize the information necessary for you to be successful in a quiz or test, disregarding the valuable knowledge we as students should absorb for this experience.
Once you set your goal, you need to start getting more specific. It moves from a dream into reality. Make a plan, it must move from your mind to a piece of paper. Write down the things that you need to do. What do you want to achieve? What will be your life when you achieve your goal? Things that you need to be done. Things that you want to learn more about your goal. Qualities that you admire in others. Improves the qualities you have. Habits that you want to stop and habits that you want to improve.
