What I Learned

At the age of 15, I started working with my mother while going to school. My mother was an owner of a small store. As a way to earn money, I would assist her in her daily duties when I got home from school. Some days were challenging and fun at the same time. There are many different things that I have learned and skills that I have developed that will help me, as I grow older in my personal and professional life. Some of the things I learned are basic life skills. I would help out by ordering new inventory and restocking the shelves. I would get supplies ready for customers that have orders and lay them out for pick-up. There are days where I would work side-by-side with my mother both in the store and at home. At home, I learned how to prepare meals. As a part of my mother's job duties, she had to budget her clients' finances and, in seeing how she did this, I learned to budget my money more efficiently. These are some skills that will be beneficial to me when I progress through life and live on my own. I believe from watching and learning from the examples set by my mother in her daily work, I have learned how to set goals for myself. I have also learned to make schedules to make sure that I accomplish my tasks in a timely manner, which will help me meet my goals. For example, when I would travel with my mom to meet with clients in order to discuss business arrangements, I learned that it was unacceptable to show up in ripped jeans, messy hair, or tennis shoes. I had to dress professionally as deemed by dress pants, clean hair, and certain shoes. I learned that how one dresses reflects how that person feels about themselves. One's way of dress shows that that person takes pride in his or her occupation and that the individual is serious about what he or she is trying to
