III. Professional Biography
A. What factors influenced me to become a teacher? This may truly shock some. I did not choose teaching. It chose me. By the end of each school year, I teeter on the thought of throwing in the towel. I mean, does it really make a difference, what I do? Can I do it again?
I advanced through college and graduate school during a revolutionary period. As a woman, I balked at the idea of being a teacher or taking on any other profession traditionally classed as “women’s work.” I wanted to make a difference in the world I wanted to bridge gaps between races, gender, generalizations and stereotypes. . If single-handedly saving the world did not work out, I could be a rock star like Carol King, Stevie Nicks, or my personal favorite, Tina Turner. But teaching? Nope. Not for me.

Ladies certainly didn't choose the profession of teaching because of monetary benefits. Butler explained that schoolteachers were met with the challenge of having "low wages and a high cost of living" (73). Classes were only taught during the seasons that didn't coincide with the heaviest farm production, and many districts only paid "per head/per day, a system that lowered teacher salaries when children were absent for impassable travel conditions or seasonal farm and ranch responsibilities" (Butler 73).
In the nineteenth century, there was a shift in the view of women. They were given more of an education in order to prepare their sons to become better citizens. The reason was because the men had realized that woman needed to be better educated to teach the values of a good member of society to their children. This took place during the Revolution period. “Woman, wrote Benjamin Rush, needed to have a “suitable education” to enable them to “instruct their sons in the principles of liberty and government.” (Foner 2014). Benjamin Rush supported the right for women to receive educational opportunities.
Looking back, I believe that the correct choice was made. Obviously, I cannot know for sure until I immerse myself in the waters of a full-time teaching position. Elementary School teacher, a professional educator for grades k-5, is a career I wish to pursue because I want to teach children the building blocks of education, love the energy and excitement that younger children give off, and want to be able to help children with special challenges. I have wanted to be an elementary school teacher for about three years now, I knew I wanted to pursue this occupation because there are many benefits to being an educator, and have always worked with children well. Not to mention that by becoming teachers, it also provided them with the freedom to become literate and have the chance to seek knowledge; thereby women were able to utilize the new found opportunity to promote feminism and eliminate any ideas that promoted male sexism in the minds of children. However, preceding the right to teach, women were taught only how to cook, do housework and take care of their children. Consequently as the nurturing of children involved molding their views and morals, mothers became practically teachers without education which was not efficient for any child in development, for the person that educated them in their first years was not educated herself. Document C says, “....been denied those privileges of education which only can enable her to discharge her duty to her children with discretion and effect..”. Although getting the right to be educated was advantageous for females, it was not the most crucial landmark of becoming teachers. It was acquiring the opportunity to influence the next generation indeed, for the they were able to cautiously implant feminist ideas into the minds of the next generation. I am an African American female who attends the University of Chicago Charter School, which is located on the South side of Chicago. I am seventeen years old and I live and attend school in a predominantly Black neighborhood. I have seen plenty in my seventeen years of living. My goal is to go to college and become a teacher, so that I can return to Chicago and help the people in my community. In six years, I will be giving back to the community and helping the world become better place. I will help teach kids not to live in stereotypes and let them bring them down.
What inspired me to teach was moulded by my own experiences of school life. I was fortunate to have teachers who were driven by helping me to achieve and prepare me for wider society. It’s funny how quickly time flies by it seems like just yesterday I was complaining about writing the first part of this assignment. Looking back at it now, the reasons why I want to become a teacher remain the same. I want to inspire, shape, encourage, and mentor my students. I want to make the kind of impact on each and every single one of them that they will carry on for the rest of their lives. Whether it be simply believing in them, and telling them that I know they are capable of accomplishing anything they want to, or helping them through a tough time. My desire to become a teacher has increased tremendously the past 16 weeks, and I am so eager and excited to finish my education to begin my teaching career.
To begin out of the countless professions one has to chose from in the world today I have chosen to become a teacher. I have chosen to become a teacher because I myself am a product of some whom I consider to be the best teachers in the world. As a child in North Carolina I was inspired by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Hollyfield. Mrs. Hollyfield taught me that no star was too far out of reach, if I put my mind to accomplishing my goal I could make it. Mrs. Hollyfield inspired me to be the best I could be at anything I wanted to be. As I have grown I have had other important teachers, some whom I am surrounded by daily whom inspire me to set out to accomplish my dreams. These wonderful inspiring people in my life have led me to the decision of becoming a teacher.
Although they permitted greater access to higher education for women, most women were denied equal education opportunities at every age and level. The need for more educational opportunities was an essential demand for young feminists and was associated with the Antebellum reform movement. In the 1830’s and 1840’s there was a shift to feminization of teaching (389). Women were taught to be natural nurturers and educators of young children. They soon became the popular teachers.

As we reminisce and reflect back either on our childhood or academic career, we tend to have that one teacher who was memorable to us in some way - for their sense of humor, their stellar personality, or perhaps having that charisma and charm no other teacher had to make a difficult subject and it 's concepts fun to learn. While knowledge is power, I firmly believe that it is rather the exchange and distribution of knowledge that is power. When one can educate the masses there is no doubt that together we can accomplish great things. Becoming a teacher would mean the opportunity to be able to witness the shaping and molding of the minds of the future generations and the satisfaction knowing that you have helped your students set themselves onto the right path and provide guidance towards the creation of a better tomorrow. Choosing to become a teacher will allow me not only to educate my students, but also educate myself to be a better teacher throughout my career. There have been many factors that have inspired me to this career choice. Watching my teachers, both past and present, has inspired me to become a teacher. I have a genuine interest in lifelong learning and as such I have the desire to not only instil knowledge and values to others, but also encourage them to share my passion for learning. Social Justice and leadership roles at school, along with my extra-curricular involvement with Cowra Youth Council, have highlighted my ability to work with and for the benefit of young people. In essence I know that my abilities and aspirations will make me a good teacher.
