She inspires me in so many ways. In November 2015 my great grandma (my grandma’s mom) passed away. I knew how close they were so it was sad to see my grandma lose someone so very important to her. During the few months after she passed my grandma just always found ways to stay happy, and she’d always relive the positive memories that her and her mom had shared together. Every time someone would bring up something sad, my grandma would figure out a way to turn it around and make it happy. Just the ways she stays positive and how she’s always wearing a smile, inspires me so much and she is someone I can truly look up to. I can’t say that because my grandma is this way I am, but I would really like to be like her when i grow up. In some ways though, she’s changed me. Having someone in your life that you consider special is a wondering feeling. And when this person has played so many different roles throughout my life it’s a magnificent feeling for her to feel so accomplished and so admired. It didn’t matter that I was inevitably going to graduate with a GPA a tenth of a point lower than I wanted, or that my director told me that he was disappointed in me because I just didn’t seem focused lately, or that my other friends just weren’t talking to me anymore. She has taught me to carry on when life gets hard. She lost her step-son and her husband within 4 months of each other. The doctors diagnosed her daughter with dementia only a few months after all this happened. Rather than shutting down and falling into a depression, she decided to take action. She poured herself into helping her daughter, as well as taking control of her own health. I think, overall, I learned that life can take some unexpected turns, and it is important to do what is best for oneself and those you care about. Cathy has led a fulfilling life so far, and I hope I get to spend many more years with her.
The commitment she had to her family was like no other, always putting the needs of others before her own. We had mornings where I would go sit with her on the front porch, drinking coffee for hours that passed like minutes.
