1. School wide expectations of acceptable behaviour
The rules and expectations are common amongst all classrooms, so students know the expectations. In a school wide behaviour management approach, the boundaries are consistent in the school culture and all activities (Queensland Government: Department of Education, Training and Employment, 2014). Determining rules and teaching them to students and outlining the benefits of working within them is a crucial upfront investment of a teacher’s time and energy. Clear, concise and positively stated rules help promote appropriate behaviour and prevent misbehaviour. Positive rules explain clearly what students should be doing, whereas negatively stated rules tell students what to avoid and challenge students to find inappropriate behaviours that fall outside the scope of the rule. Students move year levels and sometimes classes at the beginning of each school year, the expectations are unlikely to change, reducing difficulties in the establishment phase. Consistently holding high expectations for the school’s behaviour management approach ensures students are aware of the standard, and appropriate consequences. If some teachers are not holding high or consistent consequences, students may not adhere to the expectations. When the expectations are consistent throughout the school, data can be recorded, gathered and collated, where each class’ behaviour can be compared and rewarded. I will praise my students’ skills, strengths and efforts, to create a classroom culture of pro-social behaviour (Salend, 2007). With praise, these students can remember and learn to consistently behave in a manner that is seen as appropriate and acceptable. Genuine and appropriate praise delivered at a suitable time will ensure students are more likely to remember the positive action and behave in a similar way in the
