Were the Dark Ages truly Dark? The middle ages, a time around 500 to 1400 AD, have been known to be the dark ages of medieval times. The middle ages are known to be dark because the lack of cultural advancements. The middle ages were not that dark and there is evidence to prove it. For example, agriculture flourished during the early middle ages, which caused the population to rise. Another example of the middle ages having a positive outcome is that fair laws that were being made like, the Magna Carta. Another example is that universities were starting to pop up during this time period, this is example of an advancement in the middle ages. Universities were a creation that impacted the world because to this day, there are many universities around the world and they play an important role in education. Universities in the middle ages were influenced by Islamic education. The universities focused on subjects like, arts, law, medicine, and the study of religion which, is called theology. In the year 476 A.D., Rome officially fell as the greatest and most thriving empire at the time. The time period following this downfall was called the Middle Ages, more infamously recalled as the Dark Ages; but were these years truly as dark as historians say? During 1883, the American Cyclopedia called the Dark Ages a time where everyone was intellectual and barbaric. In fact, they considered the people during the time to have the worst “intellectual depression” in European history. It represents how they originally thought the Dark Ages were like instead of the new meaning. Modern studies have now shown that there was a lot going on in the Arts and literature.

Life in Europe during the Dark Ages were quite simple, as there was no efforts in unifying Europe, and the Catholic church was the only real body of power in Europe at this time. European societies were governed by feudalism, in which the king gives land to the nobles, while peasants worked on the land to live there in return. Little is actually known about this era, in that nothing significant was recorded, announcing it a “dark’ era. Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be. The Dark Ages would have been even darker if not for the people that changed it. Those that sparked revolution and incited rebellion in the people were the ones who faced potential failure head on and succeeded. Although, before these people sparked a new era, the Middle Ages took its toll on the people, making the people of Europe concerned with few things: survival, concerning things like food, family and well being, and the usual invasion or two. After news of the fall of the Roman Empire’s fall, barbarians from all around the North and the East all advanced into Europe, seeking their share of Europe, terrorizing the lands and overrunning the once powerful continent of Europe.
The relationship between college and university are influential in our society. To have an educated society in the United States brings a safe and peaceful environment to live in. Society is defined as "a group of people with a common culture or a way of life. A group of people who unite to share a common interest" (Holt, Rinehart and Winston 678). An educated society also avoids social problems such as poverty, gangs, drugs and health related sickness. Most of all, having an educated society helps our country’s economy.
