Learners who come from low socio-economic homes are not exposed to the formal language which teachers usually use. Although this puts them at a disadvantage, teachers can help students translate phrases from casual to formal register ( Payne, 2008) since “language itself becomes a very powerful tool of intellectual adaptation” (Vygotsky, 1962). The author believes that teachers can boost the self-esteem of learners who live in poverty by praising their success rather than what they own ( Thompson). This tutor can be an adult such as a parent or teacher, or can be a peer who the learner has worked collaboratively with, and have understood the instructions provided and have internalized the information to change his/her performance. (McLeod, 2014). The use of assistive technology in the classroom can allow teachers to personalize lessons for learners of varying disabilities to be part of a classroom with diverse learners. The assistive technology takes into consideration types of learning styles such as tactile and audio-visual. In this digital era, technologies can be engaging not to mention, learners are very capable of using them. There are many applications (apps) to meet the requirements of special needs students such as ‘dyslexia quest’, ‘autism ihelp’, ‘be my eyes’ and ‘iwritewords’ (educatorstechnology.com, 2017). Miss Shamla Maharaj who has suffered with cerebral palsy from birth, attended the same secondary school with the author. In her essay “On Being a Cripple,” Mairs describes her path of acceptance of her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis by declaring that she is a “cripple” in alternative to the more broadly acceptable terms: disabled or handicapped. Her essay is written with humor, satire, an open heart, and open eyes. Mair’s purpose is to describe her acceptances of her condition by using rhetorical elements and appeals, such as ethos and pathos, in order to allure her audience.
In many low income communities, there are teachers that are careless and provide their students with poor quality education. These teachers are there just to make sure that they keep receiving their monthly paychecks and act in this way because they believe that low income students do not have the drive, the passion, or the potential to be able to make something of themselves and one day be in a better place than they are now. Anyon reveals that in working class schools student’s “Work is often evaluated not according to whether it is right or wrong but according to whether the children followed the right steps.” (3). This is important because it demonstrates that low income students are being taught in a very basic way. These children are being negatively affected by this because if they are always being taught in this way then they will never be challenged academically, which can play a huge role in their futures. In some classrooms, teachers’ subconsciously use their language to establish negative relationships with literacy. For example, some teachers use reading and writing as a punishment or reference it as work instead of fun. Johnston (2004) said “ the way a teacher talks can position students differently in relations to what they are doing, learning, or studying” (p.9). In my opinion, this means that language has the power to influence student’s perception. Therefore, what teachers say and how they say it impacts how students feel about themselves and the world. But, some teacher may not realize how their words and tone towards literacy influences how children feel about it. In general, I think children in urban schools need to be exposed to language and literacy experiences that are positive and engaging. Instead of using reading and writing as a consequence, it could be used as a reward, or make it an option during free time just like any other fun activity. It is difficult to get through life not knowing how to present oneself appropriately, or even have a fluent conversation. In this paper I will discuss concepts from “Accidents of Nature” that stood out to me. “Accidents of Nature” is a story based on the life of a young girl with cerebral palsy who attends a summer camp for people who have disabilities which opposes her usual life of living in normalcy. This experience is much to the new for her as she has not fully experienced this life before. The concepts that I will discuss in this paper will relate to topics that are stressed and focused upon in our class and will exemplify many important features that are stressed upon each and every day.
Growing up, I contemplated a future in the education field; I enjoyed my experiences volunteering with children and I have always been intrinsically motivated to learn. When I started college, I decided to delve into the social sciences, but I never forgot about my interest in education. The summer of my freshman year, I joined the education team through the University of Arkansas’ community development program in Belize. I worked with my co-teacher (a senior education major), and education and literature professors to create creative writing lesson plans and methods to improve literacy for underperforming children. In Belize, my co-teacher and I facilitated daily literacy skill small groups for 2nd and 3rd graders and taught creative writing lessons with 4th and 5th graders. This experience not only strengthened my desire to work in education, but also awakened my awareness of how different levels of educational privileges affect students. I recognized, however, that while I was energized by this experience, I still lacked the skills and training that would allow me to most efficiently help

I work as a counselor each summer at a sports camp in Philadelphia, and each summer I encounter very intelligent students who are placed in lower tracks or labeled as ìlearning deficientî because of their language. This disturbs me because as a speaker of both Black Vernacular speech and Standard English, I know that students can learn to use Standard English just as I have. Unfortunately, many students are not privileged enough to have the same educational opportunities that I was given by my parents, therefore, it is my responsibility to teach these students Standard English the way that I have been taught. But I must learn more about teaching students and dealing with the issues that plague the educational system, and I am looking forward to receiving more of this knowledge during my pre-student teaching and student teaching experiences.
Assistive technology is often used by individuals with a learning disability. A learning disability “describes a neurobiological disorder in which a person’s brain works or is structured differently” (Lee1). A person’s abilities can be severely affected from a learning disability. They may listen differently, talk differently, write, spell, organize, and work with school subjects in a different way. Learning disabilities also affect people’s individual and personal lives to a great extent. According to the National Institutes of Health, one in seven children has a learning disability. The disability manifests itself when the child shows difficulty in reading, writing, spelling, and conversing with others. The added time they need to process information may make them seem less intelligent then others around them, but this is not the case. Individuals with learning disabilities are just as smart as anyone else; they just need to learn in a different way. The earlier a learning disability is noticed and detected, the earlier a child may be able to learn how to deal with or compensate for it (Lee 1). This is where assistive technology comes into play.
