Multicultural education is a form of education that incorporates histories, values, beliefs, and perspectives of people from different cultural backgrounds. Multicultural education isn 't just about learning about different cultures. It is about learning to love these different cultures by incorporating them into our own culture, especially in America. Like America, many places in the world are what we call a melting pot of cultures. This just means that there are many different cultures throughout that country. As a future teacher I have to treat everyone the same because everyone is at school to do one thing and that is learn. I also have to make sure that my class is treating everyone the same so that they can all receive a great education. In knowing that everyone is different it will help me to understand the misbehavior in some students, and also parental involvement in a students life. I think that teachers can advocate for the multicultural populations by being an example of how multiculturalism can exist in a country. I believe by being an example that teacher will encourage their students, students parents, and coworkers to embrace multiculturalism in society. As a teacher I can promote equality of opportunity for all students through multicultural education by teaching the differences, and being an example for my students so that they can embrace multiculturalism, accept different people in relationships into their lives. I still think that the three R’s are important, but now I also think that it is important to teach multicultural education. Students need to be taught multicultural education because different people are going to be around them for the rest of their lives and they are going to need to know how to connect with them. They need to know how to treat different people fairly and not to discriminate. As a future teacher, I would want to teach my students about different cultures, so they can see the differences in cultures. I would especially like to teach the different culture of the students in my very own classroom because that will help my students connect with that certain student better. In the future I would like to develop into an educator that knows about many different cultures. As of now I do not know much about too many different cultures, so I would like to change that. I want to know about as many cultures as possible so I can better connect with different people, and better connect with future students of different
Just because other perspectives are incorporated in the classroom, this doesn’t mean that everyone will become more understanding and appreciative of other cultures. When multicultural practices have rigorous standards, allow the advancement of social communications with other cultures, and allow the advancement social justice concepts both inside and outside of the classroom, this is when students will become more appreciative of other cultures (Ladson-Billings, 1995, p.162).
These concepts are easily understandable for a student audience, and the examples provided by the author encourages a deeper understanding of the expectations I have when reading the books on multicultural education. This book fits within my understanding of education because the author’s ultimate argument reinforces the understanding I have for multicultural education. However, the author has given numerous examples in his book and also explored interesting concepts in multicultural education. This has challenged my understanding of education because I have learned a lot and after reading this book my perception on education has changed because I have gained great insights about the topic. The Multicultural Education reform movement was designed to bring about a transformation of schools in order to provide an equal chance at success for all genders, cultures, languages, and ethnic groups. The movement required a variety of changes of the schools, including school policies, instructional materials, attitudes, assessment methods, and teaching styles. It is important that all major components of schools be changed in order to create a multicultural environment rather than only changing one or two components and expecting such a major change.
As a teacher, I will have to keep this in mind for all my students. Fostering an environment that cultivates and promotes the pluralistic society that we live in will be beneficial. It can help to combat the deficit approaches in education that stifle or suppress minority culture and language while promoting acceptance of a multicultural and equitable society. I hope to be able to work towards this type of classroom. With self evaluation and acceptance of student ideas, I believe that I can create this environment.
The term implies that in today’s society there is an acceptance that transcends race, color, culture, ethnicity or a student’s exceptionality. The term multicultural education implies that our society is open to providing a quality education for everyone.
As an educator, I think it is my role to counter institutionalized racism and classism. No student should ever be treated differently because of their race. The world is made up of many different types of people, each one having his or her cultural background. Over the years, the United States has become increasingly populated with cultural diversity. This influx has prompted school administrators to recognize the need to incorporate multicultural programs into their school environment including classroom settings, school wide activities, and curriculum as it becomes more evident that the benefits of teaching cultural diversity within the school setting will positively influence our communities, and ultimately the entire nation’s future. We need to be aware of the diversity in the classroom. Cultural diversity includes: bi-racial, adoptive, immigrant, gay, and step-families. It is a large majority of the students today even in my generation. Focusing on making a balanced curriculum that exposes the students to all of these different backgrounds is very important. I know that it is likely that a teacher will not be able to cater to every student, but it is important to involve each of them. There is a large percentage of students that have dropped out due to the lack of having a connection with the curriculum.
