Was Coach Carter's decision to do a lockout a good idea? To me the answer to to the question is yes. Canceling games and practices was a good idea because if the players were failing at their work they shouldn’t do basketball. The players were skipping lessons and not completing the assignments, but then they would continue to participate in basketball. That is why the most of the trouble they had was from the classrooms. Coach Carter saw throughout Richmond street players who got left behind in life by not making something out of themselves. Coach Carter did not want that the happen to his basketball players. Going to the library instead of the gym at first didn’t sound like a good idea to the basketball players and community, but when
To begin, Slam’s ego keeps him from seeing the consequences of his actions greatly, throughout the book Slam! Slam is a very popular kid who is a very good basketball player, so he feels that he has to act the part by being as “cool” as he can be. One instance in which Slam doesn’t foresee the consequences of his actions, because of his ego, is when he disrespects his coach when they play one-on-one. When Slam blocks one of his coaches shots, he tells the reader, “I go up and slap his mess away. I don’t even chase the ball, I just put my hand on my hip and give him a look.” (12) Slam could have just played the coach straight up and fair instead of having an attitude about it and being a jerk. Slam’s ego wouldn’t have been damaged by just playing the coach fairly. By playing the way he did, Slam dug himself into a hole. This left a bad impression on the coach, and the coach didn’t start Slam in any of the games, even though Slam was clearly the best one on his
A salary cap in pro sports is the amount of money every team in a league can spend on all of the players on its roster in one year. Major League Baseball does not have a salary cap. The reason for a salary cap is to keep teams competitive and not have just two or three outstanding teams that dominate everyone. Another reason leagues like the National Football League and the National Basketball Association have a salary cap is it is fair and gives teams an equal chance to get players which can make a large impact on their team by using their skill and experience. Salary caps also keep players from receiving contracts which give them an extremely large undeserved salary. This is why I am for a salary cap in Major League Baseball.
If there’s one thing we dread in the summer more than the heat, it’s the afflicting sentiment that surrounds oneself when one is inhibited from experiencing the thrills of football for six long and gruesome months. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football is a part of many Americans’ Saturdays, but to fewer does it mean their lives. Recently coming under debate, many sporting fans and college athletes believe that players should be paid more than just tuition, room, board, and books. Two articles on this issue that bring up valid points worth discussing are Paul Marx’ “Athlete’s New Day” and Warren Hartenstine’s “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid.” From these articles I have found on the basis of logical,
Any real baseball fan needs to read a copy of Bob Costas' "Fair Ball." Costas addresses the issues pressing Major League Baseball, its owners, its players, and its fans. Everything that caused the 1994 work stoppage could happen again after next season. However, Costas very thoughtfully lays out a plan primarily for the owners, since they should be able to master what they own.
The proposal of payment toNCAA student-athletes has begun major conversations and arguments nationwide with people expressing their take on it. “This tension has been going on for years. It has gotten greater now because the magnitude of dollars has gotten really large” (NCAA). I am a student athlete at Nicholls State University and at first thought, I thought it would be a good idea to be able to be paid as a student-athlete.After much research however; I have come to many conclusions why the payment of athletes should not take place at the collegiate level. The payment of athletes is only for athletes at the professional level. They are experts at what they do whether it is Major League Baseball, Pro Basketball, Professional Football, or any other professional sport and they work for that franchise or company as an employee. The payment of NCAA college athletes will deteriorate the value of school to athletes, create contract disputes at both the college and professional level, kill recruiting of athletes, cause chaos over the payment of one sport versus another, and it will alter the principles set by the NCAA’s founder Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. Under Roosevelt and NCAA, athletes were put under the term of a “student-athlete” as an amateur. All student athletes who sign the NCAA papers to play college athletics agree to compete as an amateur athlete. The definition of an amateur is a person who “engages in a sport, study, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons” (Dictonary.com).
Jimmy Carter Underrated or Ineffective? Jimmy Carter was one of the most underrated presidents in United States history. He was President from 1977 till 1981. This was a stressful time in history; there was a budget deficit as he went into office, the Cold War was still going strong, and the traumas of the Vietnam War were strong in the minds of the people.
Tryouts came and went, along with freshman year. Jesse did his normal thing - rack up rebounds, block lots of shots, score point after point. Sophomore and junior years went much the same. They had won a state championship in his junior year; Jesse had twenty points, seventeen rebounds, six assists, and four blocks. Finally, Jesse had reached his senior season, his last at Harwood. He’d shot up to six-foot ten and was benching 400 easily. He took a moment to duck into Coach Paterson’s office.
... bad that they boycotted all the buses in Montgomery. They lost so much money that the law was changed so blacks cold sit anywhere just like whites. During the boycott was when Dr. martin Luther King Jr. became an important black leader. He didn’t believe in using violence. He received the Nobel Peace Prize. But in 1968 he was assassinated and there were riots in 50 states because the blacks were so angry and frustrated.
Holding: The district court ruled that the Norris-LaGuardia Act does not apply here and that it had jurisdiction to enjoin the lockout. The court determined that the Players had demonstrated that they were suffering, and would continue to suffer, irreparable harm as a result of the lockout, that the harm to the Players outweighed any harm an injunction would cause the NFL, and that the Players had a fair chance of success on the merits of their
It is not that rare to see a coach in any sport with high expectation for their players. In all sports, there are many coaches are motivated topush their players to their limits to win a championship. Sometimes though, a coach’s fervent passion for success may cause them to lose sight of proper ethical behavior towards their players and the players’ parents. Recently, Mike Rice, former basketball coach for Rutgers University, was fired for abusive behavior towards his players. While accounts state that he was just trying to “bring the best out of his players”, the reports assert that Rice constantly tormented his players by throwing basketballs at their heads, using vulgar language, and insulting them. Although a coach’s main role is to help
This was to get ore kids to go to college which is a good thing for the NCAA but is not very beneficial for a great basketball player who doesn't want to waste time in college when he could go straight to the pros and make money right away.
Back in the early 1900s, every African American faced racial discrimination in some kind of way and many did not realize how they were affected. Rubin Carter never gave up as he faced difficult problems relating to racial discrimination. His struggle with prejudice throughout his childhood, and career left a lasting impact on the need for civil rights due to being wrongfully convicted. Racial discrimination was a huge problem in the North during the 1930s and African Americans faced hard times because of this crisis. Clearly, Rubin Carter faced many harsh consequences during his childhood.
First lets talk about how the coaches want to make there teams look good, and by that I mean how they make themselves look good. So the coaches have a really bad response to the players who bang there heads on a wall, the coaches think it is alright to just simply say, "No your fine, get back out there". To me that sounds like saying, Oh, who cares about your everyday health and mental health, pretty much your everyday life, so get out there, make me look good, and man up. I would like to see the coach go out on the
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. You playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were all meant to shine, as children do. It’s not just in some of us it’s in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others”.
On the surface, basketball has a number of impacts on young people. For instance, the boys and girls who participate in basketball learn certain positive character traits. There is evidence to suggest that because of participation, they have a better attendance in school, better grades associated with good behavior in school, and less trouble and rarer discipline issues. In addition, students also have better citizenship in school as well as the community, and an upward mobility orientation like joining college later on in life.
