Virtual teams are made up of members from different geographical areas that come together, through the use of electronic technology, to complete assignments. Businesses choose talented members of their teams to collaborate with team members across the country or in some cases, the world, to work together to find the best possible solution to a given problem. This can be accomplished by virtual meetings through the use of internet connections and the webcam on a computer. Often these members will never meet in person. (Brandt, et al 2011 p62-63). They are chosen to complete projects based on their job skills and attributes. Each member must be committed to communicating their ideas to reach the objective. If they are not, the team is not effective and the goal, though it may be reached, may not reach its full potential. How team members interact with one another will shape the effectiveness of the team. (Raghupathi, 2016) By communicating they are able to share their ideas, views, and perspectives with the team. When a member fails to communicate either by intention or unintentionally, the barrier is put up. This lack of communication can cause team members to feel unimportant and that their input is not appreciated. The lines of communication must stay open for all members to be effective team members. This can be accomplished by each member having defined roles that they are in. Each team member will have a task that they are responsible for and will answer for. In this way, all members are encouraged to work together and communicate their parts of the whole. When it all comes together each member has contributed and communicated their unique ideas and perspectives to the whole project. The leader provides the roles and monitors the effectiveness. (Raghupathi 2016) This can also be used to prevent information overload. By dividing the team into specific areas of expertise, before coming together as a whole, the information has already been condensed into usable parts.
