My academic interest includes pursuing the biomedical field and going into the studies of virology, or cancer research. Since sixth grade, I have been interested in virology. There was a lab that we did in biology class when I was in sixth grade, where we were all given different water samples, such as pond water, ocean water, and tap water, then was told to analyze what we see (though this was in sixth grade so analysis was drawing what we see and describing it). In my middle school we had a homeroom class in the middle of the day, and prior to this, I had biology, which was also my homeroom. I was looking at the one sample of water, fascinated, for two classes (90 minutes). This camp would provide me with the experience and learning opportunity that I have wanted since I was a child. I want to have a future in which I help others. This could be accomplished through either developing cures for infections or working towards a cure for any type of cancer. A lot of people that I know have had cancer, from my brother’s friend had a tumor in his leg, to multiple friends across the country having breast and ovarian cancer. The CURE program would be a great way for me to learn more and become immersed into the study of cancer research. The maximum experience that I have in the medical field is competing in the Science Olympiad for Disease Detective, as well as a HOSA competition for Biomedical Laboratory. Upon my graduation from high school, I want to get into the University of Florida to complete my undergraduate degree. Then, my ambition is to get into Princeton to study virology, where I will get a Ph.D. from which I will use to acquire a job in the field of biology or cancer
I identified the genus and species of an unknown bacterial culture, #16, and I applied the following knowledge of morphologic, cultural and metabolic characteristics of the unknown microorganism according to the laboratory manual as well as my class notes and power point print outs. I was given an incubated agar slant labeled #16 and a rack of different tests to either examine or perform myself; the tests are as follows: Gram Stain; Nutrient Gelatin Test; Carbohydrate Fermentation; Dextrose, Lactose and Sucrose; IMVIC tests; Citrate, Indole, Mythel-Red and Vogues Proskauer test; as well as a Urease and TSI Test. Materials and Methods/Results Upon receiving the Microorganism (M.O.) #16, I prepared a slide by cleaning and drying it. Then, using a bottle of water I placed a sterile drop of water on the slide and used an inoculating loop, flame sterilized, I took a small sample of the unknown growth in my agar slant and smeared it onto the slide in a dime sized circle and then heat fixed it for ten minutes.
After the end of the experiment the unknown 10 sample was Staphylococcus epidermidis. Came to this conclusion by first beginning with a Gram Stain test. By doing this test it would be easier to determine which route to take on the man made flow chart. Gram positive and gram negative bacteria have a set of different tests to help determine the unknown bacterium. Based on the different tests that were conducted in lab during the semester it was determined that the blood agar, MSA, and catalase test are used for gram positive bacteria while Macconkey, EMB, TSI, and citrate tests are used for gram negative bacteria. The results of the gram stain test were cocci and purple. This indicated that the unknown bacteria were gram positive. The gram stain test eliminated Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Salmonella enterica, and Yersinia enterocolitica as choices because these bacteria are gram negative. Next a Blood Agar plate was used because in order to do a MSA or a Catalase test there needs to be a colony of the bacteria. The result of the Blood Agar plate was nonhemolytic. This indicated that there was no lysis of red blood cells. By looking at the plate there was no change in the medium. Next an MSA test was done and the results showed that there was growth but no color change. This illustrates that the unkown bacteria could tolerate high salt concentration but not ferment mannitol. The MSA plate eliminated Streptococcus pneumonia and Streptococcus pyogenes as choices since the bacteria can’t grow in high salt concentration. Staphylococcus aureus could be eliminated because not only did the unknown bacteria grow but also it didn’t change color to yellow. Lastly a Catalase test was done by taking a colony from the Blood Agar plate...
One of the first tests performed was the Gram Stain. Gram Stain differentiates bacterial organisms according to their cell wall structure. Gram-positive cells will stain blue to purple whereas Gram-negative cells will stain red to pink (Lab Handout; Gram Stain). Upon performing the Gram Stain on my unknown cell, I concluded that it was a Gram-positive cell due to the purple color when viewed under the microscope. I also determined the shape to be cocci, as evidenced by the spherical shape of the bacterium.
My plan for after high school is to major in a science related to the medical field, most likely something that relates neuroscience with genetic studies, like neurobiology. I also hope to take the pre-medical classes required for me to enroll in medical school, which is my current goal for after undergraduate college.
To identify the bacteria under the microscope was not easy since it was our first time identifying bacteria. After one of our trials we would pour a drop of water on to a slide, and then add Iodine Sodium over that because the Iodine helps the bacteria to show more. I have always wanted to be a scientist and contribute something to the human cause and what better way to achieve this than by doing medical research? Medical school taught me the art of medicine and the research projects that I undertook taught me the science of medicine. What interests me the most is a path that combines the two, and one way to make that possible is to be an academic physician. I have always wanted to work in a teaching hospital or academic institution, one that would give me the opportunity to take care of patients, give me the time and resources to carry out trials and present them and to be able to interact with trainees.
In regards to my academic and career goals, I plan to attend a four year university and eventually medical school. After medical school, I hope to become an orthopedic surgeon through residency and specialize in sports medicine. My interest in sports medicine has developed through experiences such as observing my father’s ACL surgery, having an operation on a broken hand, and caring for my grandfather who had prostate cancer. I hope to contribute to the world of sports medicine through research, either on treatments for knee ligament tears or supplement breakthroughs. Additionally, this past summer I spent most of my time at the University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy, where I was able to explore various science-related health professions through lectures and gain insight on the medical field. These experiences have secured my interest for healthcare and medicine.
1) During my high school internship at Sharp Hospital, I once received the opportunity to witness a biopsy procedure. While it was not the most complicated of surgeries, I was captivated by the movements, the sounds, and the atmosphere. Unfortunately for the patient, my excitement may have gotten the best of me, as I excitedly questioned anything that caught my eye. However, such circumstances aren’t foreign in my life. Ever since I was a young child, an unquenchable curiosity has been an integral part of my life. My mother often recalls when I would keep her waiting while I bombarded my teacher with questions about what the class had learned that day. However, my thirst for knowledge greatly benefitted my academic pursuits in middle school and high school. When I took my first official biology course in seventh grade, I was enthralled with the various parts of the body, and how the various systems worked together to keep people functioning. However, I still wanted to know more. I was able to accomplish that
I am a senior who wishes to progress with their education. I have a head start in college as I have had access to dual admission in both a technical college and my local college. I wish to continue my education by taking part in my local college South Georgia State College, and continue at Armstrong Atlantic State University. I plan to enter the healthcare field as a nurse, and then consider becoming a physician assistant. I hope to use the knowledge acquired in these fields to help the needy in my country of origin by constructing a local infirmary.
Each student in Microbiology, went through a series of experiments to determine the unknown microbe that was given. The microorganism was inoculated to different test that in 48 hours the solution would either change or remain unchanged. Though some of the experiments required additional steps that was done on the next day of lab. Not only was a series of test done, but also a gram stain was recommended during the discovery of the unknown. The gram stain played a major step, if this step was done correctly students could cross out organisms that did not come near to theirs. By looking through the microscope, the morphology of the bacteria was distinguished by the steps of staining the slide correctly and the oil immersion that clearly shows the shape of the bacteria. The gram stain helped to either categorize your microbe as a gram negative/positive rod or gram positive cocci.
In the future, I wish to obtain an occupation in the medical field. I would like to start out by working for a Biology major and working in a premedical field in college where I can use my interest in medicine and my curiosity for knowledge to gain insight that would be needed to become a helpful doctor in the medical field. As I move along in my career, I would like to work my way through the pathway so that I can expand my skills in healing others, such as diagnostic abilities, effectively giving treatment and so on. I want to learn as much as possible so I can fulfill my ultimate dream of helping others that need answers to their medical problems and so that more people can live happily and healthily in the world. I hope to bring happiness to others and allowing people to live comfortably.
I have always loved science and math. Although I thoroughly enjoy biology, it is not my strongest subject. To conjure a greater understanding of biology I set some short term goals. I want to enroll in more science based classes in order to hone my skills . Because I wish to have a job that is a hybrid of engineering and medical principles, it is extremely salient that I enjoy a major in biomedical engineering and perhaps a minor in nano engineering. Another of my short term goals that is related to my early statement, is to take a five year route in my collegiate career. The reason is so that i may enter the employment field with a masters in biomedical engineering, thus putting me a step further than many other applicants. After settling down with my engineering occupation I will be able to work on my career and long term goals. I realize my lifetime goal is a little farfetched, seeing as how competitive the medical field is. I’m aware many people have failed in this endeavor, and it is very rarely achieved; however, based on the community service hours and extracurricular activities I have involved myself in, I feel my chances at succeeding are just as good as any. Becoming a doctor will be stressful and time taking (after all, it is a lifetime goal), but the reward at the end will be gratifying.
It is noticed that science develops in splashes, each significantly advancing our understanding of the nature. The 19th century was the time of rapid development of microbiology. In the search for secrets of nature science has reached extremely high and low energies as well as large and small length scales. Still until recently we knew very little about one of the most complex aspects of life – microbes and infection. Now we are at the dawn of efflorescence in molecular biology, which provides an excellent basis for application into several areas of biology like cancer and virology . Revelations of molecular biology become extremely crucial, as they provide insights into the way molecules work.
While attending college, it is my ultimate goal to become a doctor, either a podiatrist, radiologist, or plastic surgeon. I intend to earn my undergraduate degree at the University of Florida, majoring in chemistry. Then, I plan to attend medical school at the University of Florida, as well. After completing a residency in my specialty, I would like to begin a medical practice somewhere in central Florida.
