What ever happened to the simple games like Mario Kart 64, Baseball, Football and Sonic the Hedgehog? In the book The Sociology of War and Violence the author states, “Our popular culture, novel, history textbooks, mass media, art, games, children’s toys and many other everyday outlets are saturated with images and instruments of violence” (Malesevic). There has been a huge rise in violence in the media culture today. Television shows, movies, video games, etc. have all become more violent today than they have ever been in the past. Kids used to play these simple games and were fine with that, but now they only care about them if they have violence, killing and destruction. Many kids get angry at these games when they lose and can take it out on others. These games are promoting these kids to have more violent urges. Jill Adams, the author of “Effects of Violent Video Games”, states:
Research has shown that immediately after playing a violent video game, kids can have aggressive thoughts, angry feelings and physiological effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure. In addition, studies that survey large populations of kids on their game-playing habits and measure aggressive personality traits or self-reported aggressive acts — physical fights, arguments with teachers — often find an association between games and aggression.
These kids are taking these games as an example on how to act. These games produce some much adrenalin and these kids mix that with anger and need to get it out. The way they do this is by acting out and getting into fights with other kids. Adams also reported facts from a poll done in Japan saying, “kids were asked about what games they played... The more violent content they were exposed to, the more report[s] later in the year that they 'd been in physical fights.” The author is showing that the more violence that these kids have in their lives, the more it will affect them and they will eventually act out physically.
