“One more round, mom” is the usual phrase repeated by video gamers and detested by parents and guardians; this phrase what has now caused one of the most widely debated subjects of the 21st century. Video games are often described as a waste of time, and are used to rationalize poor decisions made by gamers. However, little is known that video games enhance future prospects by improving one’s health, career, and general lifestyle.
A commonly repeated phrase which anti-gamers utilize is that playing video games will result in poor eyesight. Conversely, according to a study conducted by neuroscientist Daphne Bavelier, gamers who played video games of the action genre in particular for a period of approximately 5 to 15 hours per week showed improvements in eyesight in two different aspects (http://www.bcs.rochester.edu, 2012). The first advancement that was noted by the neuroscientist was the enhancement in the ability of detail that gamers could distinguish; the test that was conducted featured the usual standard ophthalmic exam using a Snellen chart (http://www.bcs.rochester.edu, 2012). The test proved that not only the myth of poor eyesight due to gaming is wrong, but also that it enhanced the gamer’s eyesight acuity! There is much persistent debate throughout culture these days concerning video games. Common questions asked are things like ?Where should the lines be drawn in terms of content? and What audience, if any, is this appropriate for? As lawyers fight, bizarre crimes are blamed on video games, constant studies take place, and technology continues to evolve, the video game world continues to thrive and be extremely profitable. While there is near-constant focus on the supposed ?negatives? of games like simulated killing, drug use, or sex, most people, especially those completely outside of gaming circles, fail to acknowledge that gaming of any kind can possibly have positive effects on players. While increased hand-eye coordination is a common benefit attributed to gaming, one particular study conducted revealed a mixed bag of possibly positive and negative effects.
Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. The average adolescent spends a major part of the normal week watching or interacting with some form of the media’s products. Video games are one of these media based mediums and have become increasingly popular since the 1980’s. According to a report in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, "Female gamers spent an average of 44 minutes playing on the weekdays and one hour and four minutes playing on the weekends, and male gamers spent an average of 58 minutes playing on the weekdays and one hour and 37 minutes playing on the weekends" ("Video Game Play Among Adolescents").
