Effects of Video Games on Children and Teenagers

In recent years, technology has developed very rapidly. This has led to many arguably both positive and negative changes in our everyday lives. One such change was the increased accessibility of personal computers and gaming consoles as well as the introduction of numerous video games. Due to their entertainment value, these games gained popularity among children and teenagers. Although many concerns have been voiced related to playing video games, especially those that are violent, [e.g., increases in aggressive behavior in children (Anderson & Bushman, 2001)], this paper will argue that certain video games also have beneficial effects. They should thus be played by children, teenagers and adults alike albeit with caution.

One way in which video games can be beneficial is by supporting individuals’ intellectual development in the areas of problem solving and logic. Games like Cut the Rope, Angry Birds and The Incredible Machine require players to solve a puzzle under time limited conditions. When people are playing these games, they practice their critical thinking skills and creativity, which are both important components of intelligence.

Games can also improve one’s ability to plan and manage resources. In various strategy games, like SimCity, Age of Empires, Warcraft 3, players have to develop and manage cities with limited resources. Each player must act in a purposeful, calculated manner while allocating resources wisely. This is a very applicable skill in real life. The creators of games like SimCity and Minecraft claim that many players of these games have been inspired to choose a career in urban planning or architecture.
