Logotherapy focuses on the unique situations a certain individual is facing, as each person responds to psychotherapeutic treatment differently. In fact, logotherapy itself is not a traditional form of psychotherapy. Logotherapy extends far beyond what traditional psychotherapy is able to treat (Costello 7). Rather than looking into the psyche of an individual, logotherapy looks deeper: It peers into the patient’s soul. In the book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Victor Frankl describes logotherapy as a “meaning-centered psychotherapy” (98). By this, Frankl means that rather than emphasizing the patient’s inner desires and thoughts, logotherapy seeks to help the individual find purpose in life. Alongside Adler’s individual psychology and Freud’s psychoanalysis, Frankl’s logotherapy is considered “The Third School of Psychotherapy” (Frankl 98). Frankl believed finding meaning in life is paramount to psychological health. His ideas are supported by many psychological theorists, including Auhagen, Sappington, Bryant, Oden, and numerous other researchers (Melton and Schulenberg 38). Additionally, in modern psychology, “positive mental health” and spirituality are becoming increasingly important in patient treatment. Some of the main focuses of logotherapy include having a religious faith and other components of positive mentality, resulting in many psychologists advocating for the use of logotherapy in today’s clinics (Schulenberg et al. 448). Recent studies show logotherapy brings relief to individuals with general mental illness by equipping patients with tools to find meaning within their fight against mental instability. In a study of individuals with advanced mental illness, researchers from the Clinical Disaster Research Center at the University of Mississippi found that those treated with meaning centered therapy experienced a greater sense of empowerment and improvement of symptoms (Schulenberg et al. 456). As the world moves into the twenty first century, Western civilizations are witnessing a surge of new technology, ideas and economic success. Urbanization is spreading rapidly and Western society’s push for progression is becoming more apparent. However, this obsession with advancement has begun to take its toll on the happiness of the citizens. Studies have shown that in 2002, up to 13 percent of U.S. citizens suffered from mental disorders and that this number has only increased since then (Rinpche 60). As a result of our push for new technology, more techniques and medication are evolving and being used in psychotherapy. We must, however, wonder if it is time to try something else? Despite new advancements in medication and psychology research, we are still witnessing an increase in psychology patients and it may be time to acknowledge the idea that we may not be able to solve these problems with the same mentality that created them. Fortunately, during this progressive push there have been a growing number of Western pioneers with the open mind of trying something new, specifically in the area of psychotherapy, and have been researching and experimenting with different forms of Eastern philosophy and its use in psychotherapy (Spretnak 2).
We may nevertheless say that existentialism is a form of phenomenological philosophy that relies on certain reflective methods of studying human consciousness instantiated in the individual, society, and culture, which emerged as a popular general movement characteristic of 20 century European thought represented thought represented across many disciplines including literature, the humanities, and the social sciences. Existential psychology rejects the mechanistic views of the Freudians and instead sees people as engaged in a search for meaning (Trull & Prinstein, 2013, p. 382), therefore an existential psychotherapist may attribute the cause of the person’s anxiety to lost meaning of life. As Trull and Prinstein (2013) stated, the ultimate goal of existential psychotherapy is "to help the individual reach a point at which awareness and decision making can be exercised responsibly" (p. 383). The role of an existential psychotherapist is to enable the client to come closer to experience. By experiencing self, the client can learn to attach meaning and value to life. Existential therapy focuses on the positive approach of looking at an individual as whole, incorporating multiple factors and tendencies to applaud human capacities and acknowledgement. Fridrich Nietzsche is a philosopher who is known as the founder of existential theory by theorizing that any individual can overcome any event or concern through internal wisdom and self powerment. In fact, I believe existential therapy is closely related and are similar to multiple approaches, such as the humanistic approach by looking at the concept of individuals having moral, internal ethical values which drives their behavior in a positive aspect. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form a therapy that is short term, problem focused, cost effective, and can be provided to a broad range of disorders and is based on evidence based practices, in fact it is has the most substantial evidence based of all psychosocial therapies (Craske, 2017, p.3). Evidence based practices are strategies that have been proven to be effective through research and science. One goal of CBT is to decrease symptoms and improve the quality of life by replacing maladaptive behaviors, emotions and cognitive responses with adaptive responses (Craske, 2017, p.24). The behavioral intervention goal is to decrease maladaptive behavior and increase adaptive behavior. The goal of cognitive intervention is to modify maladaptive cognitions, self-statements or beliefs. CBT grew out of behavioral therapy and the social learning theory (Dobson, 2012, p.9). It was not until the 1950s that CBT started to swarm the psychology field. In consequence, humanists and existentialists argue that people who mostly receive judgment and criticism for their behaviors are more vulnerable to developing a psychological disorder because they fail to recognize their worth (Comer, 2016, pg. 110). Overall, the humanistic-existential treatment model objective is to change clients’ harsh self-standards as they gain self-awareness and self-acceptance by valuing and giving meaning to their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (Comer, 2016, pg. 110). The general goal of existential therapy is to help clients live authentically and recognize when they are not. In the existential view, facing anxiety, determining values, and constructing a personal identity all contribute to an authentic existence (Corey, 2017). As a counselor with an existential perspective, one of my main concerns will be helping people to break away from dependence on others so that they can reclaim their lives. Within Gestalt therapy, “the initial goal is for clients to expand their awareness of what they are experiencing in the present moment. Through this awareness, change automatically occurs” (Corey, 2013). This philosophical foundation aligns with my beliefs that people possess the ability to make their own changes when they are fully aware of their circumstances. Additionally, my concept that people, who accept outside sources without sifting through beliefs and standards that may be applicable in their lives parallels with Gestalt’s contact of introjection. People within this stage, willingly assimilate what the environment is feeding them, without dissecting what they need or want (Corey, 2013). Nonetheless, Gestalt’s unfinished business correlates with my opinion that unresolved issues can linger and clutter the present moment, resulting in maladaptive behavior and thinking. When emotions are not fully experienced, “they linger in the background and are carried into present life in ways that interfere with effective contact with oneself and others” (Corey, 2013). Within a counseling context, my beliefs that there should be a partnership between the client and therapist is one of the main goals in Gestalt’s therapeutic process (Corey, 2013).
