Verizon Wireless is a highly recognized cellular phone service provider that has a 10 year (2014-2024) agreement to be the title sponsor of the INDYCAR Series. Verizon also continues to sponsor the Verizon P1 Award, which is presented to the Verizon INDYCAR Series pole winner in each race; a partnership that started in 2010. With this sponsorship Verizon has agreed to execute and cultivate programs to benefit fans, the series, teams, commercial partners and race venues. The first Indianapolis 500 was held at the Indianapolis Speedway in 1911 and was called the International sweepstakes. The race would last for 200 consecutive laps before finishing. 40 cars raced in the first Sweepstakes in 1911. The price for first place was $14,250, no small amount, and was won by Ray Harroun. He had an average speed of 74 mph during the race. Every driver in the race had a ride-along mechanic to help with possible repairs, and to spot cars behind. Everyone except the eventual winner, Ray Harroun. The lack of extra weight made his car faster, contributing to his win. 80,200 people were at the first Sweepstake, the ticket price was $1. In 1912, the sweepstakes were raised to $50,000, attracting more drivers. It was won by Joe Dawson with an average speed of 78 mph. In 1915, not many European drivers participated in the race as WW1 was underway. Only 21 drivers participated in the race in 1915. The race was shortened to just 300 miles in 1916, the race featured the smallest amount of spectators in the race's history. There was no race in 1917 as the U.S just entered WW1.

The mixture of racetracks and target marketplace is still a situation for plenty people (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). IndyCar has ventured from its unique notion that races have to exclusively be take place oval tracks. In actuallity, the 2012 schedule had two times as many road/street races as oval course races (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). IndyCar promotes the mixture of races as being challenging to drivers by forcing them to master a mixture of tracks so as to win the IndyCar season championship (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Irrespective of this reasoning, it is a commonplace concern amongst critics that fewer oval course races will progress the IndyCar series from its roots (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). We can see where members could have issues regarding this. Some other observations that less oval races creates a problem is the reality that oval course racing is more revered with fans in America than races on different styles of tracks (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). This is confirmed through the level of notoriety held throughout the NASCAR community (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014).
