What unique qualities do you possess that demonstrate your leadership abilities?
Ever since I was young, I have always tried to be friendly and sympathetic- to bring someone to smile an extra time in their day. Throughout my junior and senior year, I was captain of my high school's tennis team. For four weekends, one every month, our team held a tryout tournament. I worked the tournament desk, and greeted the incoming freshman, along with their parents, both with worried looks on their faces. Sitting there at the desk, I reminisced on the nerves I felt that dreaded day of tryouts, so every child that came to the desk to check in, I introduced myself, and welcomed them to the tournament. It was clear to see that I eased their nerves. Even if it lasted only for a second, I knew that my welcoming them helped them feel more at home at seemingly nerve racking event.
As an athlete, and a student, I have foresight in knowing the goals I need to accomplish, but do so with integrity, honesty, and a positive attitude. Both tennis and school has brought me to understand that no matter how far down you get in life, you can, and must, pick yourself back up. During tough tennis matches, a player can be losing by a large margin to his opponent. I have experienced this situation countless times. There are two options for the losing player. The first is to tank, where the player slowly gives up mentally and stops giving his all. The losing opponent could also continue to fight, not worrying whether he wins or loses, only that he gave his all and kept in his mind the phrase "I can do this." In the classroom, I can apply this same attitude. Math has never been my forte, but I learned that if I didn’t understand a concept immediately, I would eventually grasp it with persistence in my studying and practice of the math problems.
During our tennis season in the fall, our team participates in many competitions. I try to encourage my teammates to keep this same attitude to always give their absolute hardest on the court during competitions, as well as during practice. I learned this year as captain, that a group of individuals, united by a common goal and drive, can accomplish great achievements. We fought hard and made it to the Regional Semifinals, and completed our season ranked as the number six team in the state of Texas.
All of the choices we make are influenced by our socialisation which helped shape our values and beliefs. In order to work effectively with clients, it is important for workers in the human services industry to have a firm grasp of who they are, what their values and beliefs are, a vision of their ideal future, the values of their profession, and what to do in the event of a value clash. This aids in providing clients with a service that is free of prejudice and helps workers practice ethical decision making. This essay aims to explore my personal values, beliefs and visions, before examining how my values align with core social work values, and finally looking at managing value clashes.
The Values and Motives Questionnaire (VMQ) manual explained two types of reliability that they utilized to assess the consistency of the assessment: test-retest reliability and homogeneity reliability (Psytech, 2016). The test-retest reliability assesses compares the scales that occurred at two or more separate testings, whereas the homogeneity assesses if the items within the test are similar in their ability to test the target attribute. (Drummond, Sheperis, & Jones, 2016). The two types of validity the VMQ manual acknowledged wereconstruct and criterion validity (Psytech, 2016). Construct validity is an assessment that tests if the target attribute is effectively being measured. The test needs to reflect meaning and be consistent with other established tests measuring the same attribute. Criterion validity measures the tests ability to predict the target attribute successfully, this is especially important since most assessment are given in order to predict wellness or behaviors (Drummond et al., 2016). The primary reliability assessment used to portray reliability in the manual is the homogeneity. It was reported that all of the scales have a strong measurement, except for achievement and infrequency (Psychnet, 2016). This means that of all the sub-categories that are in the VMQ are asking questions that are similar in their measurement of the target category. For validity, the inter-correlations were assessed. The results indicated that the sub-scales did not directly impact each other and that they did measure the specific sub-scales they were intending to measure (Psychnet, 2016).
This Journal Report is looking at how the managers work with their employees. It explores the differences people have even those working in the same organisation under the same management. However, this report gives a clear way of effective management. It also explores different ways of dealing with staff members who have different attitudes, values and beliefs, However, all these 3 are very close related.
The Competing Values Framework is originated by Quinn and Rohrbaugh. It emphasizes the organizational problems and choices faced by managers. The framework is divided into various managerial roles corresponding situations, as well as specific organizational environments. For instance, the facilitator and mentor roles rely on cohesion and morale to bring about human resource development within the organization. While the innovator and broker roles rely on flexibility and readiness in order to receive the growth and resource needed to perform an effective organization. The director and producer roles are more applicable for planning and goal setting skills and will result in productivity and efficiency. The monitor and coordinator roles are intended to managing information and communicating. The framework can also be divided into two main roles. The first four mentioned above are the transformational roles, and the last four are the transactional roles (Belasen, 1996). The transformational roles are more aimed toward making changes and developments, while the transactional roles have strong emphasizes on managerial authorities. The key to becoming a master manager is to be a successful manager who is able to perform each role in order to cope with all difficulties being faced as a manager (Quinn, 1988). A successful manager is also someone who is perceived by others as performing all of the eight roles more frequent than a normal manager and recognizes each of its importance thoroughly (Denison, 1995). A study by Bono (2004) also shows that giving importance to any specific working environment, such as rational goal model, may lower the effectiveness of other areas. Human Values and Social Structures It can be said that Golding describes the moral of the book in relation to the scientific mechanics of society. This is found as a major theme in the book, which is actually fear. The boys on the island view this ideal in the form of the "beastie". The "beastie" is an unseen figure on the island, which is symbolized by the dead parachutist. This fear, however, represents the potential evil found in humans.
My love for tennis blossomed at the young age of eleven. During middle school my peers knew me as the boy who was remarkably talented at tennis and I savored that title. Butterflies floated throughout my youthful body whenever someone complimented me. As the years passed, my dad nurtured me into a top player. Before I knew it high school arrived and it was time to compete at a higher level. My excitement was out of this world, but I knew my dad could no longer push me forward and my future was up to me. However, the ego I developed over the years blocked what lie in front of me. Do you ever just want to achieve a goal that you have had set for the longest time? Well, for about four years I have had a goal to become the team captain of the girl tennis team. I would, without doubt, become one of the two captains on the team. I am one of the most liked team members on the team along with my best friend Tessa. If we take a flashback back to freshman year where Tess and I first started out you would think we were playing baseball with how bad we were. Even though we were awful, we set a goal that we would one day become the captains and build an incredible team. Now, however, we have gotten ten times better than freshmen year, and things didn’t really go that way. Our coach would always say to us “your goal this year is to beat your last year’s self”.
There are so many things that are important to me, but only a few that could greatly affect my life if I didn’t have or accomplish them. The biggest things to me are success, family, and freedom. These are all things that are essential to my life in so many different aspects.
Peer relationships, obeying authority, and looking up to a role model, are all character traits that are learned through the practice of athletics. During a normal match of tennis, many mistakes will be made. However, these mistakes will be able to tell you the flaws in your swing and the ability to fix them and continue competing without getting frustrated. The conflict between values is the source of many conflicts and problems today. In contrast to the traditional conflict of values, the contemporary conflict is distinguished by these features: (1) extensiveness; (2) complicatedness; (3) profoundness; and (4) continuousness. The plurality and relativity of values is the primary cause of contemporary conflicts. The origin of pluralism lies in an interrelated trio of aspects: commodity economy, democratic politics, and individualism. The contemporary conflict of values is a historical process. Such conflict does not necessarily result in confusion; on the contrary, it can possibly lead to new and higher levels of harmony and vitality. In adjudicating value conflicts, we must (1) permit different values to coexist and respect different choices and the pursuits of values by different individuals; (2) consider the whole and the individual, the entire and the part, the long-term and the short-term, and attempt to have regard for both sides of the conflict; and (3) pursue the best and most suitable.
Rallying together with my best friends in an experience I had never endeavored before seemed like a great idea at the time, that is until the final day of tryouts drew to a close, and I found myself walking off of the tennis courts without a jersey and without my best friends. After three days of tryouts, I had not made the cut, and I was humiliated. I sat, defeated, at the dinner table that night, and I explained to my family that I wanted to forget about this sport that was so alien to me. But when my dad responded with a lesson his dad had told him once before, “You’re never out of the game until you quit,” I quickly realized that quitting was not going to be an option.
I am fortunate to have realized my faith in god in early years of my life and experiences in life have only strengthened my faith; I was born and raised in a small town in India and my elementary to undergraduate education has been from a Christian, catholic school, Convent of Jesus & Mary, a congregation established by Mother Claudine Thevnet who wanted to undertake the education of girls in India. It was in school, I first experienced the introduction to Christianity and my family being Hindu resonated a lot of common values being taught at school. Since there was no conflict in my values learnt at school and those at home, these were only deepened and have become an important part of my personality. As a result of my upbringing and my education, memories of my faith are amongst my earliest. I believe in the presence of god and I believe that god has bigger plans for me. My education and my family has integrated values in me for respecting, accepting, understanding other members of the society. Hinduism taught me how to be respectful and tolerant to others, it taught me that I need to understand that I am a human and I am here to serve and help others in need. There have been times when faced with difficult challenges in life and I have followed the path laid by god, ignorance went away and I found solutions and answers to the problems and challenges that I faced.
On an otherwise ordinary day in England, a shadowy figure wearing a Guy Fawkes mask enters the state controlled television studio and at gunpoint, forces its employees to broadcast a specially prepared video addressing the people of England. In the video, the very same mysterious masked man chastises the English people for their disregard for the once cherished values of duty, freedom and honor, values shared by many ancient civilizations. While at first glance, western culture as represented in the movie, V for Vendetta, may seem drastically different from those of ancient societies, many underlying philosophical similarities do emerge deep down. Even though modern westerners enjoy enhanced lives due to technology, medicine, and education, they share many similar values and cultural beliefs with the societies of Ancient India, Rome, and China.
Understanding who we are as individuals can be a struggle for people throughout life. It can be difficult to comprehend who we are and why we exist. There are daily outside influences that help create who we are and what our values are. Values play a significant role in our lives. They shape the choices we make and reveal a big part of our identity to the world. Some values may be more important than others, but they still manage to influence our lives in one way or another, whether we know it or not. Values can range from a tangible item to an idea that has influenced us to stand by and remember those values. The values we hold with the highest importance act as a guide and help us prioritize our purpose and goals in our daily life. My family has taught me a list of values and traits that have helped me become a well-rounded individual. I value my family more than anything because most of my core inner values have started from their teachings at one point or another. My top values that I have developed from my family are dedication, honesty, and wisdom. I will discuss who I am in terms of the important values that shape my personal belief system and decision making framework that, in essence, describes the direction of my life.
