Do you ever just want to achieve a goal that you have had set for the longest time? Well, for about four years I have had a goal to become the team captain of the girl tennis team. I would, without doubt, become one of the two captains on the team. I am one of the most liked team members on the team along with my best friend Tessa. If we take a flashback back to freshman year where Tess and I first started out you would think we were playing baseball with how bad we were. Even though we were awful, we set a goal that we would one day become the captains and build an incredible team. Now, however, we have gotten ten times better than freshmen year, and things didn’t really go that way. When the season started I knew I had to play better than I have ever played before because all of us girls are at the same level. So I was trying my hardest to smash over heads and volleys on the court. It almost seemed as though that coach wasn’t giving me any attention or helping me out ,but he was with everyone else. I would ask him to help me with my serves and he would just tell me to throw the ball higher and not even demonstrate anything. Throughout the tryout week it kept happening. When it came to talking about what teams we were on I didn’t know what to expect. My expectations were so high for myself, but I just block out all my current goals. Whatever happens in that meeting can’t be changed, so what’s the point in even trying to suck up to coach like everyone else on the
I continued to push myself to do better, but my coach relentlessly would call me out and embarrasses me in front of the team. When my teammates questioned why I was not a part of their varsity team, my coach would call an organized team meeting, one I was not invited to attend. She was cruel and her words were demeaning, insulting and she seemed to be on a mission to have my teammates shun me on and off the court. She told the girls that I was not “physically or mentally ready for varsity”.
I never played travel ball, only recreation softball so I've never actually been on a team that I tried out for. Over the summer I went to batting practice and fielding to get ready for the year. This is my year, I thought ready to tryout and make the team. The day came to where I had to show what I could do to the coaches. It took a while for the tryouts to actually commence because there was so much rain that week that it kept getting pushed back. This made more nervous, I just wanted to get it over with. I worked hard throughout the tryouts, but when I went up to bat I could not hit the ball. I tried many times but I couldn't do it. I felt terrible because everyone else hit great. I was embarrassed. I first joined my high school’s tennis team when I was a freshman. Although I had little knowledge of the sport due to the district’s lack of a tennis program at the junior high I attended, I still wanted to experience something new. However once tryouts came around, I was one of the unfortunate ones to be cut for no logical reason. The news devastated me and made me feel that I wasn’t good enough to do anything. On the other hand, my friends made the team and encouraged me to try again the following year because they knew I could improve and be great. I took their advice and practiced from days on end the rest of my freshman year to improve and tryout for the team my sophomore year. Through the hard work and determination, I found myself on the team my sophomore year and joining varsity my junior and senior years, which made me feel a lot better about myself.

I was very excited when I was invited to play for the girls’ high school tennis team, when I was still in eighth grade. Playing for the team was both very intense, because of the many practices we had every week, and fun, since I was able to meet my friends. There came a time every week when I would feel very nervous, and that was when we played matches against other high schools. In the first two weeks, I was able to win all my singles and doubles matches, which helped me gain a lot of confidence. This was until the third week, when I played a strong, well-known tennis player named Noor, who was also very high in the USTA rankings.
Throughout high school, I was a varsity member of my school’s tennis team. Unlike most school sports, our tennis team consisted of both boys and girls on the same team. A small school to begin with, the lack of funding for tennis led to an even smaller turnout in the boys tennis team, thus they allowed girls to also join. In addition, the program was still very new and unestablished. The end result was an untrained boys tennis team that was actually just an untrained girls tennis team with about three boys tagging along. Unfortunately, all of the surrounding tennis programs consisted of lifetime tennis players, and yes, they were 100% male. This combination meant that my second doubles partner, Kayla, and I were usually greeted by our opponents with the mentality that the match would be easy, since we were just girls.
After middle school, my next goal was to become the star at my high schools basketball team. Unfortunately when I arrived the talent was much greater than it was in high school. There were kids in my grade who were dunking and at the time, and I could barely touch the net. Undaunted by the task I participated in a scrimmage with the Varsity team. During a match that is broadcasted on TV viewers are usually given an opportunity to see a varying amount statistics. These statistics would the number of aces, first and second serve percentages, number of winners and errors, and so on. The average viewer would only go as far as knowing who won, but these statistics provide a much deeper into many underlying aspects of the match such as how a player won and the chances of winning. I started playing volleyball in seventh grade, and I had completely fallen in love with the sport. Growing up in a small town, our school always struggled to find coaches that were not related to players. In middle school, I would always be so angry that the important named kids got to play in the A team, while I was stuck in the corner with the B team. Eventually, eighth grade year I decided to join a club team, and increase my skill for freshman year. I enjoyed club, I had actually made the one team, and I had virtually no problems with anyone or anything that season. But, just as soon as freshman year rolled around my attitude changes a lot. I’ve gained the perfectionist trait from my mother, and with this mindset in a sport, you’re almost guaranteed to struggle. Freshman year I had just come off of club, so I knew so much more about the sport and its movements. Naturally I wanted to be perfect, I personally believe that I had done really well as a freshman, but when I messed up I became silent.
