Observing college students in their natural habitat during the summer can be very tricky. Campus is a ghost town at The University of West Alabama. Of course, the administrative offices are busily preparing for the upcoming semester, but the on-campus student population is relatively low compared to fall and spring semesters. The low summer enrollment numbers nationwide are part to blame from the limited financial aid a student can receive in the summer. In order to receive the best results from the observation, I picked a place I knew students would congregate. The UWA fitness center has a steady flow of students between the outdoor pool and the general fitness area. The first step to any observation is to take in the surroundings. My observation …show more content…
One student scanned my fitness center card, which gave me access to the pool and the fitness center. Two lifeguards were sitting pool side in matching red bikinis marked with “lifeguard” across the chest. The lounge chairs were occupied by teen and college aged girls. During the observations time, no men were at the pool. Most people at the pool were laying in the chairs catching rays, but a few were floating in the pool to cool down. The girls at the pool were grouped in pairs. The fitness center was the complete opposite. Everyone was doing their own activity with very little human interaction. Music was blasting over the speakers in the gym, but everyone had personal earbuds. I wondered what people were listening to. The machines were full of students and community members. The gym is a very odd place to observe interactions. Everyone in the gym are participating in similar activities, but yet not one is having conversations. A simple head nod or smile is the main form of communication. Men would occasionally pump fist with each other and women would wave or give a simple “how are you?”. I got the feeling people came to the gym to take a break from the real world. The cardio machines were the most visited section. I feel men are more concerned with sculpting muscles when women are more interested in feeling comfortable in their body. In general, more
A college campus is nothing without a gym. College sports, and cultural events take place in the T.M. Elmore Gym on Alabama A&M’s campus. This gym is located on the west side of A&M’s campus between Louis Crews stadium and Dr. Ernest L. Knight West Campus dorms. This building has made a large impact on the culture of the school considering that the gym is home to sports teams, classrooms, pep rallies, guest speakers and convocations.
I couldn’t see staff in the office, nor were there any students in the hallway or in the classrooms. The entire school is empty. Must be a day off or something, I thought, blinking in surprise. Suddenly, I recognized the building. Just last week, I visited the exact same campus.

When it comes to choice of where to workout it is a complete personal preference. Some people do not like the thought of people staring at them or watching them workout because they are not at the place they wish to be at yet. This is only one other thing that sets people in this discourse community apart from themselves. In some instances, this can become a disadvantage for the person pushing towards a specific goal. Certain goals can be pushed to the side or completely forgotten about because of the discomfort people feel placing themselves in a place like a gym for the first time.
Our table is dismissed. I head back to gym with a full stomach, something that shouldn’t happen. Third block is the lunch block and the eighth grade special block. This shouldn’t happen and as principle the first change that would be in immediate effect would amend the schedule to be specials during first, second, and fourth block. This will cause improvements in health with gym being at least an hour away from lunch for the eighth grade; dietary habits considering people eat as minimal food as possible to preserve their stomach, and enthusiasm because students will see any change to the current schedule as a robust change. In addition, I would change the current format of the schedule. Extend math and English to 3 hour classes, but on an
When I reached the weight area I noticed the surrounding walls covered in mirrors. Throughout the gym floor, next to water fountains, you can find plastic containers hinged against the wall filled with antibacterial cleaning agents and paper towels. The open space and the high ceilings trapped the sound of the ongoing pop music interrupted by the occasional grunt or the crash of a dumbbell on the matted floors. The metal on metal as weight bars are hoisted back onto their rack. The commotion of treadmills, elliptical, and stationary bikes is the white noise of the gym. Briefly, I analyzed my surroundings observing how the weight area was mostly male dominated with a handful of women, an absolute disparity in comparison to the cardio sections.
The gym is a place where a typical American college student goes to work out their bodies. Based on the fact that I personally could be considered a gym rat, a stereotypical name for someone who spends a lot of time in the work out area. This is partially by choice being on the swim team requires the strength training equipment that is available to our disposal in the gym. While I have been to the gym many times I haven’t really taken the time to take in the other people around me. Within this ethnographic exercise I will explore the college gym norms within Roger Williams University.
My teaching subject area and anticipated grade level: Physical Education in a High School setting.
The experience includes the collection of relevant knowledge, the details on how the group communicates with each other and how they develop understandings with each other. The exercise is essential to learn how the ethos, logos, and pathos appeals affect the person’s ability to become part of the discourse community and how it affects its membership. This experience being shared here will also help readers learn about my own personality and how I came to join this particular fitness gym club.
Personal space, body language, and overall interaction between the participants in the gym was something that I hadn't paid enough attention to in the past, from the distance I could see that their interests. The intimate couples that I noticed in the gym seemed again sought to have created a private space for them by erecting invisible barriers through their private body language directed only at each other, resulting in considerable more space between these couples and other groups of people in the gym. It was a clear and present body language of please do not bother us attitude left a sense of diffused power that would be involved power relationships that operate without covert commands and requests. The dynamics of the couple was something that was very obvious, in that I was able to note the dominant and the submissive person. The person who had a tendency to meet the needs and the one who had the ability to be demanding.
I believe that fitness has a greater impact on you mentally than it does physically. Fitness releases chemicals that cause you to feel better instantaneously, improving mood for 24 hours. Fitness makes you more confident and improves your self-esteem, key for ridding anxiety and depression. Fitness makes you set goals for yourself, motivating you to improve yourself everyday. It gives you a boost of energy after, making you feel like you can conquer the world, or to just do your homework.
The users’ perception of the campus landscape space is closely tied to human activities as well (Manning and Coleman-Boatwright 1991). Research also indicates that, in a setting such as a university campus with a wide range of users from young freshmen to faculty and staff and active retiree, landscape spaces need to span from active/urban to passive/natural and large open lawns or hillsides to secluded spaces (Abu-Ghazzeh 1999). 2.2.3 Design Elements of Campus Landscapes Campus landscape elements and character creates sense of place and sense of belonging for users’. Some elements in campus landscapes whether it is the special fountain, a distinctive building, or students interacting in a park- like setting somewhere on campus, such pictures entice students to consider this place home for the next number of years (Yahres & Knight, 1995).
Information When you think of a person who is physically fit you probably think of a sprinter, gymnast, weightlifter, football player, or basketball player. There is so much to physical fitness besides being one of those people. For decades, physiologist and fitness organizations have tried to come up with an answer and here it is. “Physical fitness- a measure of the body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, resist hypokinetic disease (diseases from sedentary lifestyles), and to meet emergency situations .” Sometimes they add to the definition stating it is the ability to transmit genes to the next generation. Now, this is the short answer for what physical fitness it is much longer is and detailed
When you 're designing your personal fitness program, consider your fitness goals. Think about your fitness likes and dislikes, and note your personal barriers to fitness. Then consider practical strategies for keeping your fitness program on track. Regular exercise can help you control your weight, reduce your risk of heart disease, and strengthen your bones and muscles. But if you haven 't exercised for some time and you have health concerns, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting a new fitness routine.
The fitness assessment showed that I am mostly average. My body max index was healthy, and I was below the population average. Normally being below the average doesn't mean it is good but with BMI it is. With the rest of my assessments I was above the average. I felt that I was a little low on my scores for the push-up test, the sit-up test and the sit and reach.
