In Louise Erdrich’s The Round House and Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things, events from the past are used to develop the characters and plot lines in the novels. In The Round House, Mooshum’s stories of the windigoo that he tells in his dreams, the subplot involving Linda and Linden Lark, and the apparent negativity towards Catholicism shown on the reservation show the pervasive influence of the past on the present. In The God of Small Things, the inclusion of Pappachi’s moth throughout the novel, the constant referencing to the Love Laws, and continuing problems involving race relations show how much of an influence the past has on the present for the characters and the plot. The Round House, is a story of justice and tradition and how these two concepts can both help and hinder each other. As Joe, the protagonist of the novel, sets out on a quest to avenge the rape and near murder of his mother, he learns a lot about the culture and traditions that surround him on the reservation. Arguably, the most important aspect of Native American culture that Joe learns of are the stories of the windigoo that Mooshum tells in his dreams. These stories push Joe to seek revenge on his own and help him to develop a better understanding of how and why racial conflict and Native American history are so important in the quest for justice for his mother. Traditional stories are also important in The God of Small Things. The concept of the Love Laws being laid down at the beginning of time influence the relationships of every single character in the novel. In both The Round House and The God of Small Things historically prevalent struggles such as the ones between native and foreign religions and the ones between white people and non-white people are shown to be incredibly influential on the ways that the characters of the present view the world and those around them. In both of these works the authors show that the past is a massive influence on the present.
In the novel, “Ishmael,” Daniel Quinn introduces two groups of people with an apparent connection with Mother Culture; the Takers and Leavers of the world. Quinn’s intended purpose of introducing these two very distinct groups of people in “Ishmael” is to show an outsider’s perspective on the world’s captivity, the creation myth, and the fate of the world- all of which are often given by Mother Culture. The Takers and Leavers appear to have very different belief systems and methods. The Takers, for example, have their organized religion to tell their stories, while Leavers have their spirituality to tell their stories.
The opening of the novel places the reader not in Falola's shoes as a child, but rather as an adult scholar attempting to procure information from his own family. This proves easier said than done as Falola takes us through the process of obtaining specific dates in a society that deems them irrelevant. By examining the difficulty that Falola has in this seemingly simple task, the reader begins to understand the way in which time and space are intertwined and weighed in Africa. This concept of "connections between words, space, and rituals" encompasses the way that Africans perceive the world around them - as a series of interrelated events rather than specific instances in time (Falola 224). This approach also stems from the concept that the family unit, the village, and the elders come before the individual in all instances, making a detail such as a birthday unimportant when it comes to the welfare of the whole. Introducing the reader to the complexities of African conventions, Falola expands their minds and challenges them to view the forthcoming narrative with untainted eyes.

It is filled with themes that are common to the American Indian Culture such as magic, personification of nonhuman subjects, loyalty, coming of age and the hero’s journey, and cultural identity. Highwater uses many of these themes to give the reader insight into his unique cultural background.
Louise Erdrich’s short story “American horse” is a literary piece written by an author whose works emphasize the American experience for a multitude of different people from a plethora of various ethnic backgrounds. While Erdrich utilizes a full arsenal of literary elements to better convey this particular story to the reader, perhaps the two most prominent are theme and point of view. At first glance this story seems to portray the struggle of a mother who has her son ripped from her arms by government authorities; however, if the reader simply steps back to analyze the larger picture, the theme becomes clear. It is important to understand the backgrounds of both the protagonist and antagonists when analyzing theme of this short story. Albetrine, who is the short story’s protagonist, is a Native American woman who characterizes her son Buddy as “the best thing that has ever happened to me”. The antagonist, are westerners who work on behalf of the United States Government. Given this dynamic, the stage is set for a clash between the two forces. The struggle between these two can be viewed as a microcosm for what has occurred throughout history between Native Americans and Caucasians. With all this in mind, the reader can see that the theme of this piece is the battle of Native Americans to maintain their culture and way of life as their homeland is invaded by Caucasians. In addition to the theme, Erdrich’s usage of the third person limited point of view helps the reader understand the short story from several different perspectives while allowing the story to maintain the ambiguity and mysteriousness that was felt by many Natives Americans as they endured similar struggles. The legal theme and its impacts on the lives of the men and women trapped within a Kafka-esque legal system results in a young boy acting as a vigilante to enact a tragic form of justice. Conflicts of jurisdiction and sovereignty have long made it difficult to prosecute non-Native men for the rape of Native American women. The novel operates as a mythic vessel for the beliefs and actions of a Native American, Ojibwe ethical system nearly stamped out of existence.

Particularly, Lena St. Clair felt restricted by her mother as she shields her from the dangers of the outside world. Consequently, when Lena did face trouble, she was unable to fight back and saw evil in everything she saw. Furthermore, the constant conflict that arose from the male superiority in Ying-Ying’s marriage and her miscommunications with her husband influenced Lena’s present behavior. Instead of expressing her own concerns, Lena allows her husband to make major decisions. Influenced by her childhood experiences and the troubles of the marriage between her parents, Lena inherits a passive role in her relationship to Harold.

The suffering of losing Carlota prevailed Willie to survive and keep his legacy in secret. This revision of the story has many in common themes with the survival of Native American Culture. Maturity is a state of mind that suddenly shatters the past state of mind of innocence, and leaves it destroyed. It becomes irretrievable. Maturity is then forced upon the person’s mind until it is accepted as a normality. In The God of Small Things, written by Arundhati Roy, children named Estha and Rahel recall the biggest tragedy of their lives. Rahel feels responsible for the death of her cousin, Sophie Mol, and must come to terms with the horrible trauma she experienced. This event transforms the book into a tragedy with a grim tone. The tragedy and aftermath are caused by their reckless behavior.They both are forced to mature when they experience that tragedy and the aftermath of it.

There were so many different meanings in the novel. I believe that people should get a better understanding of one’s culture before one reads a novel of a different culture. If one does not understand the culture, one can misinterpret the meanings in the story.
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy tells the story of the communist state of Kerala and the forbidden love between two castes, which changes the lives of everyone. In the novel an ‘Untouchable’, Velutha is a carpenter and works at Paradise Pickles and Preserves for much less than he deserves because of his status as an Untouchable in the caste system. Velutha falls into a forbidden love with a divorced woman, Ammu who is associated with an upper caste Syrian Christian Ipe family. Marriage was the only way that Ammu could have escaped this life, but she lost the chance when marrying the wrong man, as he was an alcoholic and this resulted in them getting a divorce. Ammu breaks the laws that state ‘who should be loved, and how and how much’, as their affair threatens the ‘caste system’ in India, which is a hierarchal structure and social practice in India in which your position in society is determined and can’t be changed.
