This essay focuses on the theme of forbidden love, The God of Small Things written by Arundhati Roy. This novel explores love and how love can’t be ignored when confronted with social boundaries. The novel examines how conventional society seeks to destroy true love as this novel is constantly connected to loss, death and sadness. This essay will explore the theme of forbidden love, by discussing and analysing Ammu and Velutha's love that is forbidden because of the ‘Love Laws’ in relation to the caste system which results in Velutha’s death. It is evident that forbidden love negatively impacts and influences other characters, such as Estha and Rahel, which results in Estha and Rahel’s incestuous encounter.
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy tells the story of the communist state of Kerala and the forbidden love between two castes, which changes the lives of everyone. In the novel an ‘Untouchable’, Velutha is a carpenter and works at Paradise Pickles and Preserves for much less than he deserves because of his status as an Untouchable in the caste system. Velutha falls into a forbidden love with a divorced woman, Ammu who is associated with an upper caste Syrian Christian Ipe family. Marriage was the only way that Ammu could have escaped this life, but she lost the chance when marrying the wrong man, as he was an alcoholic and this resulted in them getting a divorce. Ammu breaks the laws that state ‘who should be loved, and how and how much’, as their affair threatens the ‘caste system’ in India, which is a hierarchal structure and social practice in India in which your position in society is determined and can’t be changed. Therefore this proves that in a country such as India, where social status and prosperity are crucial, it is evident that love takes preference over all, despite the norms of India, love will always be a priority. Therefore we see that not only did Ammu and Velutha break the ‘Love Laws’ , but so did Estha and Rahel break the ‘Love Laws’ when sleeping with each other.
As a result of Velutha and Ammu’s affair, Velutha was later murdered by the police for false accusations.
Baby Kochamma also experiences the theme of forbidden love, as she wants to believe that she chose not to accept Father Mulligan’s love, the one thing she desired more than anything. Ammu and Velthu’s foribidden love is disgraceful to her, as this could be because they have what she couldn’t have.
In John Updike’s short story “A&P,” the reader witnesses the power of desire. Three girls walk into the store, A&P, in nothing but bikinis. They were looking for “Fancy Herring Snacks” for one of the girl’s mother. The girls were being kicked out by the manger; however, the cashier quits because he desired one of the girl’s attention and tried to be the hero. The poem “The desire of love-power” by Sri Chinmoy, illustrates that desiring something can change a person’s life for the better, or for the worse. There are many kinds of love, relationships and companionship in the world. However, during some sensitive periods of time, some love is marked as forbidden love or guilty love. Some people had to give up their love, some people had to decide to hide their love forever, some people had to get rid of the result of the love to protect themselves under that background. Wayson Choy, the author of The Jade Peony, tries to use the conflicts in the novel to tell people what real love is. Therefore, in the novel, the three relationships are three kinds which are not easily accepted by people at that time. Love has nothing to do with nationality, love has nothing to do with age, love has nothing to do with gender.

Love, an emotion everyone can relate to. This theme draws in many readers as it is a very passionate topic. In Nectar in a Sieve, by Kamala Markandaya, she attempts to use love as a major theme throughout the story to keep the audience engaged. However, this method doesn't work in this case because it is not true love, but rather an undermining theme guised by this “fake love.” The true theme, instead of love, is portrayed as anti-feminism and a degradation in power of women. Therefore, love is not an overlying theme in Nectar in a Sieve, but rather women’s dependence on men, which counters feminism beliefs and gives less power to women.

Arundhati Roy uses an intriguing technique to tell the story of Ammu, Rahel, Estha, Sophie Mol, Velutha, Mammachi, Chacko, Margaret Kochamma, and Baby Kochamma. Roy starts the story by in a way paraphrasing all the events that are to occur throughout the story. She then proceeds to tell about the funeral of Sophie Mol and Ammu, Rahel, and Estha’s trip to the police station. She begins the story at the end. The reader does not find out until much later who Sophie Mol is and why Ammu and the twins went to the police station. Roy continues the story by jumping from Rahel and Estha’s childhood to their adulthood. Every chapter jumps from past to present. In every chapter Arundhati Roy answers or creates more questions about her characters lives for the reader. Combining a Hindu mythology reimagining with a bi/queer individual who seeks to explore both his sexuality and his idea of love while trying to remain within the barriers of society creates a refreshing, organic view of what love is. Shraya explores how although our general idea of love remains virtually the same throughout experiences in our lives, it is our search for identity and who we are that changes what we will accept in loving relationships. As the protagonist grows within the ideas of societal norms, he finds himself confused and lost as to what he is as both a body and a soul. ‘No one else was attracted to both boys and girls. His desires must be wrong.’ (Shraya, p. 23.) Having no sense of identity in combination to what society says is the norm disables his ability to love himself. He is insecure, withdrawn and confused as to what or who he is supposed to be. He is unable to love himself, and still be true to himself within the ideas of what society expects of him. Shraya poses the idea that when you are confused about who you are, you are unable to truly grasp the ideas of love around you. The narrator misses out on the opportunity to make friends in high school because he has his own insecurities to guard his heart and the ability to love others. The book touches on his high school experience, and I noticed that his high school friends were never mentioned in the novel after he had graduated; this conveys the image that when someone is insecure and unable to love themselves, they limit the ability of other peoples love to come into their lives. From this section of the book, a reader can take away that the when someone is confused or uncertain of their identity they are unable to truly identify with others and therefore are unable to open up to love and relationships. The fact that both are from different caste systems, they don’t let this come in the way of their feelings. From beginning to end, the novel, “The God of Small Things”, authored by Arundhati Roy, makes you very aware of a class system (caste) that separates people of India in many ways. This separation among each other is surprisingly so indoctrinated in everyone that many who are even disadvantaged by this way of thinking uphold its traditions, perhaps for fear of losing even more than they already have, or simply because they do not know any other way. What’s worse, people seen as the lowest of the low in a caste system are literally called “untouchable”, as described in Roy’s novel, allowing, according to Human Rights Watch:
