According to my food pyramid, I live healthily. In fact, I could be a bit healthier, but for now, I’m content. Comparing my pyramid to the USDA’s food pyramid, I could eat a bit of protein or meats. Inside my food schedule, don’t have a lot of grains and could consume extra fruits and veggies. Other than food, there’s not much need for improvement, besides exercising and using weighing pads often to be sure I’m keeping up. Another figure I could arrange is to compare my health to the health of other kids and find out where I stand. Instead, of eating fast food, I could keep track of how much I eat and calculate from there numerous home-cooked foods and fit those into my calorie intake. Right now, my calorie intake is 450-580. If I eat fast
American society has grown so accustomed to receiving their food right away and in large quantities. Only in the past few decades has factory farming come into existence that has made consuming food a non guilt-free action. What originally was a hamburger with slaughtered cow meat is now slaughtered cow meat that’s filled with harmful chemicals. Not only that, the corn that that cow was fed with is also filled with chemicals to make them grow at a faster rate to get that hamburger on a dinner plate as quickly as possible. Bryan Walsh, a staff writer for Time Magazine specializing in environmental issues discusses in his article “America’s Food Crisis” how our food is not only bad for us but dangerous as well. The word dangerous could apply to many different things though. Our food is dangerous to the consumer, the workers and farmers, the animals and the environment. Walsh gives examples of each of these in his article that leads back to the main point of how dangerous the food we are consuming every day really is. He goes into detail on each of them but focuses his information on the consumer.
The book The No-Nonsense Guide to World Food, by Wayne Roberts introduces us to the concept of “food system”, which has been neglected by many people in today’s fast-changing and fast-developing global food scene. Roberts points out that rather than food system, more people tend to recognize food as a problem or an opportunity. And he believes that instead of considering food as a “problem”, we should think first and foremost about food as an “opportunity”.
For this part of assignment, I kept record of two consecutive days of what I ate for that days and how much calories I got from that food and drinks. Every day I usually start routine with drinking water which I think is the most important thing for a healthy lifestyle. Apart from this, I learned some following main points to help me by comparing my food chart with the recommendations
According to the “Hunger and Poverty Fact Sheet” on Feeding America’s website, in 2014 there were over 48 million Americans living in food insecure households, which included 32 million adults and 15 million children. For over 35 years, Feeding America continues to be in the forefront in solving this crisis by providing food to people in need through a nationwide network of food banks. In the late 1960s, Van Hengel established the nation’s first food bank and years later established the first national organization of food banks, Second Harvest. Second Harvest was later called America’s Second Harvest the Nation’s Food Bank Network and in 2008, the national organization changed its name to Feeding America.
My goal is to consume 1500 calories per day. According to the Super Tracker website, for breakfast I should have 1 ounce of grains, ½ cup of fruit and ½ cup of dairy. I will be able to have a midmorning snack that can include 1 ounce of grains and ½ of fruit. For lunch, I can have 1 ounce of grains, ½ cup of vegetables, ½ cup of fruits, and 2 ½ ounce of protein foods. This meal plans also allows me to have an Afternoon snack, that can include ½ cup of vegetables and ½ cup of dairy. Finally for dinner, I can consume 2 ounces of grains, 1 cup of vegetables, and 1 cup of dairy, and 2 ½ ounces of protein food.
I have enough exercise from doing yoga and hiking every weekend with my family. Any time I’m free, I try to do something active that will benefit my physical health. Although I maintain my physical health pretty well, I have a difficult time to eat 3 balanced meals everyday. For example, I skip lunch almost everyday on school days because I have a lot of meetings to attend and don’t have the time to eat. Also, I skip breakfast if I wake up late and need to get to school. I need to work on eating meals everyday to satisfy my hunger even though I have no time to. It’s difficult to stay active when I don’t eat enough meals
One of the most unhealthy diets in the world is that of an American. It is made up of processed foods and a good amount of television. America easily has the most fast food restaurants in the entire world. Leave it to McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King or any other fast-food restaurant to serve extremely cheap and even unhealthier food at any time during the day or night. ”It tastes good so why not?” That seems to be the question many people are asking now-a-days. Because it is so easily accessible and processed, it is made to be very tasty and extremely unhealthy. Many Americans find his or herself indulging on the these fatty foods of America on a day-to-day basis. While it may taste good at the time, it has a terrible effect on your body on a long-term basis. Eat it regularly, and it becomes a nasty and deadly habit and can cause heart failure, Type 2 Diabetes, high cholesterol, high-blood pressure, and many other life threatening complications to the body. The American diet has a numerous amount of pitfalls and disgusting habits. The American diet is one of the worst diets because of its portions, processed foods, and how it is very cheap, but the American diet can be overcome with determination, a healthy diet, and an exercise routine.
The diet that I am currently on is not as nutritious as it should be. By looking at the Dietary Recommended Intakes for my age and comparing it to my current dietary habits, I hav...
This diet critique will be from everything I ate from Sunday, February 7 to Saturday, February 13. According to my dietary reference intake (DRI), I was allowed 2191 kcal for the week and I consumed 1978kcal. I met 90.3% of what I am allowed, although it Is on the higher end of the range it is still within. My calories from fat were 647kcal and my max allowed is 767kcal. Although I did not go over the minimum I was allowed was 438kcal so I still went over 209kcal from fat in which could be avoided. Checking the fat content on my snacks and limiting myself could reduce my actual intake while still being in range. The same applies to my total fat intake. My max was 85g and I consumed 72g when the lowest could have been 49g.this is still 23g of fat consumed that I did not not. Especially for trans fat I consumed 3.2g when ideally it should be 0g. Eliminated trans fat as a whole because there is no nutritional benefit would eliminate this entirely from my diet. My omega 6 and omega 3 intakes did not meet my DRI. I consumed only 3.9 g or omega 6 when my DRI is 12g and I consumed 0.5g of omega 3 when my DRI was 1.1g. To increase my omega 6 intake, I could start using grapeseed oil instead of the cheapest one I find which may not be the healthiest. I already use purchase grapeseed oil for my hair so getting another bottle to cook with would be easy. To increase my omega 3 intake, I could start consuming more beef and salmon in my diet, the majority of the meat I eat in my diet is chicken, so this switch could add variety.
Most Americans do not care enough to take a look at the nutritional values of the food that he or she is consuming. That is why America has the highest percentage of obesity in the world. This is a serious problem because one in every three adults is obese, and one in every six children is obese. There are many factors that go into the regular American diet, but most of those factors are not appealing nor is it healthy. Americans put way too much processed food into their daily diet. Some would say that other countries diets superior the American diet because of nutritional values that it carries. Other countries have proven that an active lifestyle is a huge element in the average weight of the country. There are many things that Americans could change about their diets and lifestyle that would help them to become healthier.
Since we have been learning about nutrition in class, our task was to record a food log. Nutrition requires a well-balanced diet containing nutrient and vitamins like amino acids and fatty acids. Over the past seven days I have been recording and have been looking very carefully at my intake of nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and fats. In our task, the objective was to record the basic foods we ate during the period of seven, but it did not require recording every single detail or our intake of food. Doing this food log was a pain and it was disturbing because I never wrote about what I ate like breakfast, lunch, dinner, or additional meals. I found this food log useful because it helped me learn what I can change in my intake of foods to make my diet healthy and to see what about my diet is affecting me from being healthy because I could affect me in the future.
A couple things that I need to add more to my diet are fiber and vegetables. First semester of college, I was living in the dorms called Eaton, which is located next to a dining center and a “fast food” place called Clyde’s. For me, it was very easy to walk a half of a mile down the sidewalk to get something fast to eat. What I didn’t realize was how bad their food is for you and how often I made an appearance there. It wasn’t until winter break when I came home for a couple weeks and started to get back to my old ways of eating when my mom would prepare every meal, which would include some type of meat, potatoes, and fruits and vegetables.
My self-improvement project will be about improving my diet and being able to have a healthy lifestyle. I've always been an active person, but I've never really eaten so well. I would eat whatever I was craving at the moment. I've never thought about watching the way I ate because I wasn't the type of person to gain weight and get fat. I have a very fast metabolism. Even though I'm skinny it doesn't mean that the food I put in my body can't harm me in the long run. Having a good diet is crucial in having a healthy lifestyle. Diabetes and high blood pressure runs in my family and if I don’t take care of myself I can end up getting it. Many of my family members have had heart attacks and strokes due to not taking care of themselves right. Many of them are obese
I’ve always been someone who is aware of what they’re eating , and how it affects them, so this isn’t new to me. I have learned the deep details of it though. Right now, my metabolism is 2,404 calories. Along with that, I need 55g of protein, which is important because I don 't eat much meat. I will need to get proteins from other foods like dairy, fruits, or vegetables, so I can still properly build tissue for my body and get lots of energy. Along with protein, I also need 70g of fat. In order for me to grow properly, get energy, and breakdown vitamins, I will need that much fat, which is found in all food groups. To get my last source of energy, I need 374g of carbohydrates. To get that, I’ll need to eat many fruits, vegetables, and grains. Lately, I’ve been self conscious of myself, and how my body looks. In my mind, I’m overweight. I am 140 lbs. According to the internet, the weight for a girl my size ranges from 107-157 lbs., so technically, I’m okay. Despite this fact, I am still going to work toward a healthier diet, and I’ll definitely use these guidelines to help
My freshmen year when I lived in a dorm and all my food was prepared for me, I ate pretty well. I made sure to have a balanced diet and to eat a lot of nutritious foods as opposed to processed foods. However, now that I live in an apartment and am entirely in charge of cooking my own meals, my eating habits aren’t great. I tend to buy a lot of canned or microwavable meals that are quick, easy, and cheap to make. That is what stood out to me most on the days I recorded; how much I eat simply because it’s cheap and convenient. Although I have a lot of room
