University vs. Vocational Education.
Education has always been a major problem for both high school graduates and people willing to improve their qualification for a better job. Though there are many other reasons why people care about education, this fact does not undermine the whole importance of it. If after graduating from a high school, a person thinks of continuing his or her education, the most common idea might be to apply to university. Although, that is not the only possible solution, as there are other alternatives, for instance, vocational education. As given by Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, vocational education is “training for a specific occupation in agriculture, trade, or industry through a combination of theoretical teaching and practical experience” (Merriam-Webster.com, 2014). In other words, vocational education is a way of education targeted at the specific occupation in mainly technical fields. Comparing university, or general, education to vocational education, one may find various advantages of one of the education types over the other. This paper goes over some of the differences between the above-mentioned education types.
Being a usual first choice for many prospective students, general education requires on average from three to five years of studies that result in university diploma in a chosen major. Compared to vocational studies, universities usually have a higher variety of different majors, ranging from humanities to natural sciences. That gives students a better chance to decide on what to spend their lifetime on, since it is relatively easy to switch majors, especially in the first years of studying at the university. The presupposition of Preparing for a Career by Derek Bok indicates that vocational majors and liberal arts major should merge to help students prepare for their career. Bok states that vocational college only prepare students for the future, but does not teach students the basic knowledge such as U.S history, English, reading and how to think critically and understand what one’s learning. In the United States, the history of Career and Technical Education evolved within four major periods. First, the Awakening period which began in 1776-1826, when the right to a free public education was expressed. During this era, educational opportunities in labor and industrial education were being demanded. The rising working class began to press for an education that were more appropriate for their labor and industry’s needs (Awakening 1776-1826, 1976). Even Benjamin Franklin who represented the Awakening middle class was on board with the rise of technical and vocational education which were taught primarily by private masters or contracted apprenticeships (Cohen, 1976).
It is to no surprise that America has a large amount of its people incarcerated for a variety of reasons. One must ask themselves how we can help these individuals get back on track. The answer is America’s most powerful weapon known to man; an education. This is an annotated bibliography for research on the effects of education in the prison system and if these effects are worth taxpayer’s money.

If more people went to college, and less went the vocational route, jobs will take a momentous hit. Today, companies will not even touch an application that does not include a Bachelor’s Degree; even if the Bachelor’s Degree has nothing to do with the job being applied for. Attention is not given to whether the hopeful applicant qualifies for the job; all that matters is that the applicant has a Bachelor’s degree. Murray best sums up the American job market when he says, “Employers do not value what the student learned, just that the student has a degree” (Murray). Students go to college in search of knowledge, a new lifestyle, and the hope of a job after graduation. For many young adults, college is a rite of passage into an independent, mature new lifestyle. Not only is higher education a rite of passage, for some, it is also an opportunity to have a better life. Overall, college is a wonderful part of many people’s lives, yet the way the college education system is conducted wastes students time and money. College is basically composed of two parts: general education classes and major specific classes. General education courses are the source of wasted time and money, and should not be required of students. Education is an infinite learning process that plays a vital role in modern society. Even now, without a higher education one cannot even get a simple occupation such as a sales clerk, carpenter, or custodian. From writing checks, filing taxes, driving a car, to budgeting groceries, all involve the pre- knowledge and basics of reading, writing, and calculating.
