People communicate to express needs, wishes and preferences, to share ideas and information, to reassure, express emotions like fear, anger, pain, joy and love, getting to know each other, ask questions, share experience’s , gave instructions, share opinion, give encouragement. The nature of communication is very different dependent on the circumstances.

Effective communication affects aspect of work in adult social care setting as it builds up team work and creates as easier environment to work in. In your job you need to communicate with people all the time. First and foremost is the
person you are supporting, but there are also a their family and friends. It delivers a better understanding of situations and helps keep everyone “on the same page” and everyone has the same understanding. Inadequate communications can cause problem.
Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
Effective communication is important when working with children and young people. Effective communication is good as it helps make relationships between the child and adult, this will further the children’s communication skills and they will then be able to make friends. Communication is also important as it’s how we express and share our feelings, needs and ideas, that’s why it’s important for adults to make good relationships with the children. Children should feel comfortable and relaxed when communicating as this makes them more likely to enjoy communication and be able to discuss any problems to the adults.

Communication can affect relationships in an adult social care setting. Care workers must having clear and open communication to help, build and maintain relationships that are built on trust and understanding. It is important that social communicate with individuals in a good and understanding manner therefore, the communication will be effective. The individual and the social worker need to understand each other clearly in order for the individual to receive the best possible care as possible. Communication involves a complex web of thinking, actions and interaction and it’s not just about what’s said and how it’s said, it’s also about the method by which information is communicated and how it’s received. The way in which we communicate can be determined through many forms but many think about this only in the verbal sense. However, communication is central to effective social work practice and can take many forms including speech and language, the written word and through other devices such as recordings etc. We must ensure that we have a clear understanding of a person’s needs and their preferred method of communication to ensure it’s effective. Non verbal communication can be just as important and it’s these forms that can often lead to misinterpretation, such as body language, choice of words and language used the way a person dresses or the use of space or distance. These components can completely change the way in which we communicate and how those messages are received by others (SCIE, cited 11th February 2014).

Being a student that is studying to be in the helping field and becoming a professional social worker, it is important to understand and be aware of the different communication styles because you will encounter situations in which you will have to intervene in one on one sessions, small groups, and large entities. Knowing your communication style will help you become a more effective social worker because you will be more beneficial while assisting your clients.

There is expectation to demonstrate core communication skills and the capacity to develop them and ability to engage with people in order to build compassionate and effective relationships (The College of Social Work, 2014). Communication skills are fundamental in social work; every aspect of their role involves communication. In order to communicate effectively, social workers need to be aware of the forms of communication, i.e. non-verbal, verbal, body language and written and understand communication barriers. (Thompson, 2009). In light of this, when communication barriers occur, i.e. someone not understanding English or wanting to discuss their issues, having these skills allows social workers to overcome this, i.e. asking the right questions or putting in place an interpreter. Having effective communication within social work provides a strong base for good professional relationships. Trust is able to be built, providing confidence in both the social worker and service user in meeting, discussing and building upon solutions (Koprowska, 2005). I promoted such skill throughout the interview as I remained aware of my body language, ensuring I was open, faced the carer and remained good eye contact. I was also continuously aware of the carer’s body language, to inform me of how she was feeling. Being mindful of her eye contact, facial expressions and position of body enabled me to realise she was not being responsive in the conversation (Banks, 2006). Being able to identify this, allowed the barrier to be overcome by asking probing questions and engaging her back into the conversation. As a social worker it is important to have basic communication skills in order to connect with clients. There are six basic and four advanced skills that are used in direct practice to make communication more effective. The basic skills include reflection of feelings, paraphrasing, open ended questions, closed ended questions, clarification and attending behaviors. Advanced skills consist of summarization, information giving, interpretation and confrontation. Not only is it important to know what these skills are, it is also important to know what the appropriate and inappropriate uses are. It is also important to self-reflect on your use of these skills, and whether it is a strength or something to continue to work to improve on.
