Being a student that is studying to be in the helping field and becoming a professional social worker, it is important to understand and be aware of the different communication styles because you will encounter situations in which you will have to intervene in one on one sessions, small groups, and large entities. Knowing your communication style will help you become a more effective social worker because you will be more beneficial while assisting your clients.
The three different communication styles are contributor, collaborator and challenger. After completing the survey I found out my dominant style was the Contributor. The Contributor role inside of the group is the individual who keeps in track of the tasks and gets the team to focus on completing the task. The role that I scored the lowest in was the Challenger. The Challenger role in the group is to ask questions about goals and the process.

My personal opinion about the results I received from the survey was, I thought that I was more of a Collaborator than any of the other styles because I usually know the vision or the goal I am trying to reach but sometimes it is just hard to put the steps together in order to get there.
I scored a 47 for Collaborator and a 52 on Contributor but I also understand why I might have scored higher in the Contributor. Being the President of my organization on campus, Sisterhood of Success, the role of Contributor comes into play because I am usually the person that puts together the agenda for the programs and makes sure the rest of the board gets on board with the plan.
Another example of a contribution my style makes inside of a group environment is trying to make sure that everyone understands the task that was asked of them so they will be able to accomplish it effectively and in a timely manner. Specific behaviors that I portray while working in a group setting is I am always sending group members reminders of deadlines and keeping the group updated with new
information. A challenge I may encounter that may affect my ability of being the most effective team member is having a strong style that may set me apart from the other members. The result of the scores was 52, 47, 43, and 38 which were not that far away from each other. If my group does not establish the role of each member an issue may occur and I will try to do my duties and other team members duties as well. The behavior of others that may affect my ability of being able to fully contribute to the group is if the individuals are not communicating effectively and not putting in any effort or not doing their part. The systems and the norms that help with effectiveness of team work is first, everyone being aware of the expectations of one another. Then, all the members need to know their strengths so that they can perform well in their role. In closing, it is important to understand and beware of the different communications to enhance your ability to become an effective team member.
Collaborative leadership is my preferred leadership style. This is because I believe that if everyone contributes and equal participation is encouraged then great things can be achieved. As the cliché saying goes, two heads are better than one. However, an issue I found with collaborative leadership is that not everyone contributes and there is a risk that one person will dominate and not allow others to participate. Often the loudest and opinionated members will contribute while the quieter individuals will generally not contribute, especially if they are not with their friends.

It cannot be described in such narrow terms within social work because of the different techniques involved in working with different service users in a multitude of situations. Language and Communication is the 5 Standard in NASW Cultural Standard Indicator. Communication is one of the biggest factors within the social work practice. Communication is such a vague word and can’t be defined within narrow terms because there so many different techniques involved. When communicating with my clients the fundamentals are communication which are voice, body language, hearing observing encouraging and remembering are key thing that I would be apply and be mindful while communicating with my clients. As a social worker it is important to have basic communication skills in order to connect with clients. There are six basic and four advanced skills that are used in direct practice to make communication more effective. The basic skills include reflection of feelings, paraphrasing, open ended questions, closed ended questions, clarification and attending behaviors. Advanced skills consist of summarization, information giving, interpretation and confrontation. Not only is it important to know what these skills are, it is also important to know what the appropriate and inappropriate uses are. It is also important to self-reflect on your use of these skills, and whether it is a strength or something to continue to work to improve on.
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
The verbal communication goal is to encourage the client to fully express the changes and wants of set outcomes established. Both verbal and non- communication can have an impact on the client once interaction is met. Non-verbal communication consists of body language, facial expressions, closeness, and eye contact (Schore, 2008). If a client senses the listener is uninterested or showing signs of discomfort due to their diagnosis or disability, it can cause one to be unengaged in the conversation. Verbal communication can also result in the same disengagement due to the social worker/ therapist tone of voice. Social workers are to be mindful and educated on the background of the client being served to be aware of the different approaches to take when engaging with the individual. I work well in group situations. I always try to encourage all members to participate and contribute. It is interesting to note that in most situations, I tend to be one of the group leaders. I do have a strong personality. Yet I try not to come across as controlling or bossy.
Leadership style is the manner in which a leader provides directions, implement plans, and motivate people or a team to achieve a goal (Newlink, 1997). After reading the course work study and taking a leadership style quiz on the web. (About.com, 2014). It is my conclusion that my leadership style is participative. In Participative leadership style, members of the group are allowed to identify goals and develop strategies to reach the goal. As a participative leader, I do not shove my ideals into my member’s throats or impose my decision on everyone. Though the final decision rested with me, each member of the group is still giving an opportunity to express their view and knowledge of the task at hand. Each member’s suggestion is taken into account and the final decision is made based on the suggestions. Therefore, I serve as a facilitator, not a dictator.
There are several factors that play a part in leading to solutions and success in different organizations. The way people communicate in an organization is a pertinent one. There are different styles of making a conversation, with the two most commonly used, such as aggressive and assertive communication styles. They may appear to be similar, but the differences and the effect they have on the listeners are dramatic.
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
Hence, I can utilize my strengths and manage my weaknesses to be a better member in future group assignments. In particular, I will focus on utilizing my personality traits in moderation as either extremes of high or low on a personality may be too rigid, being an extreme strength in certain situations, but being an extreme weakness in others. Despite having a low extraversion, I can still take a more active role in future discussions by sharing all constructive ideas instead of shying out and worrying of others’ negative feedback. I will also balance between orderliness and flexibility by proposing general deadlines for our group and at the same time allowing members to organize their own progress so that we can have organization in the group without suffocating the members. With more flexibility given, I will keep in mind to be agreeable in moderation in which I will be trusting and compassionate to the members but also able to be firm if any member is slacking or not meeting our deadlines. The details listed above are just part of my personality and working style that can be improved upon which serve as general guidelines for me to contribute more to future group assignments. However, they should not be viewed as rigid rules which I will follow blindly. I will always remember that I am working with a group of people with various personality traits and I should approach each member with ways that may improve our productivity instead of treating them as the same and that a single method will suit everyone, since that would reduce the uniqueness of each
Communicating effectively and in a professional manner is not only important in how other people view us; it could determine which jobs we are able to obtain as employer Kevin Weins brought out. Everyone can benefit from trying to communicate more effectively. Trying to improve my own communication skills has helped me in my own life and career and can help other people in their own careers and in their daily life.
Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
