Unhealthy Food Causes Obesity
In “Bad food? Tax it, and subsidize vegetables” by Mark Bittman, He proposed that Too much unhealthy food will cause obesity. It has become a nation-wide problem, that schools are encouraging bad eating habits. Kids that eat foods such as: chips, candy, popcorn and french fries are at risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Bittman not only wants to stop unhealthy foods in schools, he would also like to save the government funds. To solve the health problems associated with unhealthy food choices, bittman suggested on providing a healthy meal plan, and 30 minute daily workouts, and vitamins. Bittman feels changing each school lunch menu will minimize obesity in children and adults. University of Illinois at Chicago discovered that the U.S obesity rates reach 42 percent. Children who eat fast food as a regular part of their diets consume more fat, carbohydrates and processed sugar and less fiber than those who do not eat fast food regularly. Bittman suggested that the government should replace all unhealthy food with healthy foods. The government would need 3 billion dollars to remove all unhealthy foods. The average American consumes large quantities of processed foods instead of sub sizing money to purchase staple foods. He states “national diets have failed, because education alone is no match for marketing dollars that promotes unhealthy foods”. Processed foods are chicken nuggets, salami, bacon, top ramen, dried fruit, flavored nuts, fruit snacks, popcorn, ketchup, and frozen dinners. Due to an increase fast food supporting unhealthy foods, children and adults has tripled in size in 2009 causing more medical issues. To lower the percentage of obesity, the government has to fund 3.5-4 billion dollars to be able to fix products and be able to remove majority of unhealthy foods. Instead of the removing all unhealthy foods, we can equally find the best prices for the best food items and come up with a healthy meal plans to maintain a diet. If the economy came together to find a mutual ground between healthy foods and unhealthy foods, there would be a reduced tax on products. It would boost the economy revenue, and also will bring in more business from local farmers. To request a change in products the government would need to do extensive research on vendors that sells and provides the products.
