Unhealthy Food Causes Obesity
In “Bad food? Tax it, and subsidize vegetables” by Mark Bittman, He proposed that Too much unhealthy food will cause obesity. It has become a nation-wide problem, that schools are encouraging bad eating habits. Kids that eat foods such as: chips, candy, popcorn and french fries are at risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Bittman not only wants to stop unhealthy foods in schools, he would also like to save the government funds. To solve the health problems associated with unhealthy food choices, bittman suggested on providing a healthy meal plan, and 30 minute daily workouts, and vitamins. Bittman feels changing each school lunch menu will minimize obesity in children and adults. University of Illinois at Chicago discovered that the U.S obesity rates reach 42 percent. Children who eat fast food as a regular part of their diets consume more fat, carbohydrates and processed sugar and less fiber than those who do not eat fast food regularly. The average American consumes large quantities of processed foods instead of sub sizing money to purchase staple foods. He states “national diets have failed, because education alone is no match for marketing dollars that promotes unhealthy foods”. Processed foods are chicken nuggets, salami, bacon, top ramen, dried fruit, flavored nuts, fruit snacks, popcorn, ketchup, and frozen dinners. Due to an increase fast food supporting unhealthy foods, children and adults has tripled in size in 2009 causing more medical issues. To lower the percentage of obesity, the government has to fund 3.5-4 billion dollars to be able to fix products and be able to remove majority of unhealthy foods. Instead of the removing all unhealthy foods, we can equally find the best prices for the best food items and come up with a healthy meal plans to maintain a diet. If the economy came together to find a mutual ground between healthy foods and unhealthy foods, there would be a reduced tax on products. In light of this issue, Bittman proposed the idea of taxing unhealthy food and drinks while promoting vegetables. This plan could potentially kill six birds with one stone. The benefits would include less unhealthy food consumption, the decrease of diseases, and the decrease of public health costs. They would also include in making healthy food more available to the masses, the environment would improve, and it would save billions of dollars annually that could be raised for other places and activities. The food that they provide is made to be eaten quickly, causing problems for the digestive system. Also, the health problems lead to the use for health insurance, which adds to the costs of Medicare. Health care costs will only worsen an already failing economy. Government-provided food stamps are often expended on junk or fast food, because it tends to be less expensive than fresh or cook food. Governments fund producers of meat and dairy products to keep prices low. For now, governments are taking a smarter and more productive approach through regulation, and by working with manufacturers.
It is said that fast food advertising is linked to rising childhood and teen obesity. The childhood obesity epidemic is a serious public health problem that increases morbidity, morality, and has substantial long-term economic and social costs (opposing viewpoints). Approximately 20% of our youth are now overweight with obesity rates in preschool age children increasing at alarming speed (opposing viewpoints). U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona said, “obesity is the fastest-growing cause of illness and death in the United States.” When I read this I was shocked. This is something that can change, but its up to ourselves to make that commitment. No one else has the power to do so but us. Did you know that treating obesity-related problems cost Americans $117 billion annually, that’s $420 per person (CQ Researcher).
Obesity is a big social issue in America. Due to the popularity of fast food and other unhealthy foods, more and more Americans are developing health diseases and disorders. We should be getting the correct daily nutrition amount, but because of our fast paced lifestyles we sometimes do not have enough time. Fast food restaurants make it possible to grab a meal and go. We often do not pay attention to the nutrition amount, but are simply looking for a quick bite to eat that will fulfill our hunger. Increasing the price of junk food, by adding tax, researchers hope that this will prod people to reject unhealthy foods. Taxes will also encourage a healthier lifestyle, even in low-income families (Franck, Caroline 2).
