1.0 Introduction This report is on the human resource (HR) issue confronting Uber Australia and its partner. The report highlights the significance of human resource practices as regards to employment and how both the employer and employee are protected under the labour laws. According to Goh (2016, p. 304) written and legally bound contracts are covered by the law and in case of a breach, the responsible part is held liable. If Uber has a written agreement, then the company would have known which avenues to explore without the need for litigation or court cases. However, the company is settling the case even if they have a valid case against the dismissed driver. This highlights a challenge with Uber’s hiring process, working practice and relations with their contractors. Milner (2012, p. 207) notes that a written contract documents the intricacies of the working conditions from the job description, pay, working hours and conduct and this help guide both the contractor and the service owner. Legal power because customers have a right to file a lawsuit against Uber if they so choose. • Taxi companies, other ride sharing companies (Lyft) have political and legal power because they may lobby government for fair competition like supporting the App-On Gap law. Legal power because they can sue companies that compete unfairly. • California App-Based Drivers Association, American Insurance Association, the public, attorneys for consumers, the Government, and internet based companies all have political power because they can network or work together in groups to lobby, present arguments for and publically support proposed legislation like the App-On Gap law.

Jonathan Kay’s “Fare Share” has many weaknesses that make his argument not effective when writing his article. Kay’s argument talks about how Uber is stealing taxi drivers of their livelihoods and how Uber is taking over the taxi monopoly. Weaknesses found in this article was when Jonathan Kay makes Uber look bad when talking about their flashy app which seems to kind of promote it even more, and with a little more research he can find other taxi apps. To add on he seems to write it very tongue-in-cheek. Furthermore, Kay also lacks evidence to support what he says because some of his arguments are weak and basic. Another weakness would be that he left the reader wondering what he is trying to prove in his argument about Uber, he seems to be all over the place with his argument. Overall, this was a weakly written article.
How did Uber and Lyft become more popular in 2016-2017? Because people love the latest and greatest trends once popular. As a result, many of us, especially young people, are unaware of the many reasonable safety standards that these companies are not required to follow, like in-depth background checks, vehicle safety and valid insurance policies. According to an article in Forbes Magazine titled, “Uber's Background Checks Failed to Catch a Murderer and Other Felons, Prosecutors Say”, prosecutors from San Francisco and Los Angeles contends that ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft continue to mislead their customers by selling the notion that the company conduct in-depth background checks on all of their drivers. Despite the fact records show that drivers are intentionally providing false personal information to these companies, hiding incidents of sexual assault, assault, pedophilia, robbery, theft, kidnapping and murder. Recently, both Uber and Lyft settle lawsuits, requiring them to change the wording in their message to customers. Prosecutors maintained that the “gold standard” for criminal background check must include fingerprinting or other biometric identifier; therefore, Uber and Lyft cannot claim “industry-leading”
“Hr is shifting from focusing on the organisation of the business to focusing on the business of the organisation” (Zulmohd 2011). David Ulrich points out four distinctive roles of HR which makes the organisation most effective and produce competitive advantage. He planned to change the structure of HR function and build HR around roles. The four key HR roles identified by Ulrich, one HR business partner/strategic partner – aligning HR and business strategy which plays an important role in setting strategic direction. To continue to the third key role, change agent which understands the organisations culture, and takes the responsibility to communicate those changes internally and gain its employees trust. The final key role identified by Ulrich is employee advocate which is a core in HR role represents employees and helps to improve their experience, protect employees’ interests and confirm strategic initiatives are well balanced. In my opinion, HR practices can make positive contributions to organisational performances, because except the unpredictable external environments, human resource management can improve the most factors that affect employees’ performances which finally influence organisational performances in long-term perspectives. This essay is aim to prove human resource practices can positively effect organisational performances based on literature discussion and empirical evidences. The next section briefly brings few negative views about the limitation of HRM related to improving organisational performances. The third section discuss the positive relationship between HR practices and organisational performances are established by applying HRM processes of hiring, selecting, placing employees as well as creating employment relationships within organisations. The final section is going to analyse an example company Mark & Spensers successfully utilised HR practices to improve their organisational performances and created competitive advantages.
Uber needs to focus its entry into densely populated areas of Canada lacking a well developed public transit system. These opportunities can easily be taken advantage of if Uber was to further develop its existing strengths.
When researching flights, I looked into three airlines, Jetstar, Qantas and Air New Zealand. They all provided flights arriving and departing in June 2018 and are sufficiently under the $1740 budget. Each options provide various features that differentiates them. However, the most efficient way to spend this money is with Qantas’s option one.

Just a few years passed with the unregulated taxi industry until it was determined a failure and the majority of the cities previously stated re-enacted their regulations. With the up and coming ride-sharing app, Uber, we could be facing problems very similar to the ones we faced during the anti-regulation movement such as higher prices, lower quality of vehicles and drivers, unpredictable fares, riders in low-density areas being neglected and many more. Uber has been growing immensely since it was created 5 years ago with a major reason being because it is not regulated nearly the same as regular taxi services. Uber proponents are preaching that the monopolistic, overregulated city cab services need to be broken down. With Uber on the rise, we can expect to see a decrease in the quality of service as inexperienced and unprofessional drivers will be behind the wheel.
