Last Wednesday I went to the UNCW involvement carnival. There were tones of tables and people packed in shoulder to shoulder as they searched through clubs, businesses, religious organizations, and community members looking for a community of friends, a service, or just free stuff. Free shirts, tank tops, sunglasses, frisbees, stickers, notebooks, bracelets, pens, makeup, coupons, food, drinks, and many other free items were being thrown out everywhere. I stumbled through large crowds, passing by a rush of other college students, all with different destination. The culture of the carnival was like nothing I have ever experienced. Through the UNCW involvement carnival I learned about different community groups, I became interested in new clubs, and I was able to get tones of free stuff. Community is important in the life of every individual. It is important to become a part of something bigger than your self. While at the involvement carnival I got to talk with a group of people from the Scotts Hill Baptist Church student ministry. I was able to get shirts, tank tops, sunglasses, frisbees, stickers, notebooks, bracelets, pens, makeup, coupons, gym bags, pencils, paper clip holders, key chains, bibles, fans, chap stick, food, and drinks! I was walking around with I giant 17th Street bag full of all of the free stuff that I was given. Some of the items I didn't really even want or asked for. As I walked down the rows of tables I was constantly being handed random things to shove in my bag. My favorite thing I got was a really cool pair of Aspen Heights sun glasses that have a wood like frame and UV protection lenses. I wear the sun glasses when I drive to school in the morning and I look really cool in them. All of the free things being handed out was the most fun and memorable part of the involvement
While there are many small happenings throughout the year, the main focus is on “The Big Event”. This is a 12-hour long dance marathon where dancers who have spent the year raising money for the cause dance their hearts out, get to meet the children part of the Children’s Miracle network and their families, and have opportunities to continue giving (whether through signing up to donate bone marrow or having hair cut for Locks of Love). During this big party, attendees are not allowed to sit/lay down or have any caffeine. This is to try and replicate a tiny bit of how the kiddos feel on a daily basis, having to go through treatments and long hospital stays while still trying to keep their spirits up. The main component I look for in college is their commitment to further my studies. I feel this college will provide an ingenious culture within the science field, therefore rendering myself with the building blocks necessary to later pursue the medical field. Not only does UNCW devote itself towards their student’s undergraduate years, but also by providing Professional pathways such as Pre-Medicine, students such as myself can go into Professional schools better prepared. In addition to my interest in the academics the school has to offer, I also marvel at the amount of extracurricular activities available to the student body. As a commuter to McDaniel College, I don’t spend much time on campus outside of classes. Therefore, the relevance of after school activities doesn’t apply to me as much. Keeping current with events happening on campus grounds, is often a daunting task. However in the spirit of class participation, I decided to create awareness that fall break is upon us.
Upon arriving to college, many students face the challenge of finding a community to belong to. I believe the student affairs professionals on campus are the resource to building communities within the student body. Reflecting back on my first semester of college, I found my community within two organizations; Dance Marathon and UI Alumni Association Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.). Within the organizations I met two advisers who opened my eyes to the world of student affairs.
For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.
Clubs were a great way for me to expand my interests outside of athletics. I was involved in Key Club and FCA freshman year and I enjoyed meeting new people and making a difference in our community. I was inducted a member of NHS junior year and this was a great way to make service a priority.
I have decided to apply to the UNCW Honors College because I believe that it will help further enhance my education. I believe that I will be pushed and encouraged to do my best in not only in academics but in my future endeavors as I search for a career as well.
Within my school, I was Co-president of the National Junior Honor Society group for our school’s annual Parking Lot Party (PLP). For this project, I, along with the help of my other officers, led a group of students to create a set of games and activities for the PLP, which came out with very good results and lots of smiles from the students who both played the games and volunteered for them. From this experience, I have learned how much I enjoy planning an event and seeing it executed successfully with positive results on my community, and I hope that I can continue to do this in YAC.
Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
This year I have served 74 hours for Learner Leadership Council, 27 hours for National Charity League and 17 hours for New Tech High at Coppell. One of my favorite places to volunteer is at Cornerstone Closet where homeless adults come to get needed items and take showers. We get to help them find clothes, and necessities and spend time talking with them. Another organization that I spend a great deal of time serving in the summertime is Metrocrest. We put together the food backpacks for families through the Backpack Summer Hunger Project. These organizations reach out to other organizations and charities and assist with acts of service. Even on campus I have been able to serve others. Being a NTH@C Tour Ambassador has been an important way for me to give back to my school. I enjoy showing others our learning environment and the importance of what happens each day. By attending clubs on campus is also another way that I feel is a pertinent way to serve alongside others and celebrate their passions. School events such as ‘The Day’ and other school wide bondings also exemplifies service participation. It is a powerful way to show our connection to those around us on a daily
Over the four years that I have spent at Good Counsel, I became part of many activities. Each helping me evolve as a person and become stronger yet. Simple lists could be made of every activity that I have ever been involved in but it could never express to a person what I have learned and how it helped me to grow. Every environmental club, science club, political science club, service work, and S.A.D.D. club I was part of had a very special message to deliver to me. Whether the message was one of responsibility, or a life lesson, I grew from it. The Political Science club opened me to many new experiences. It allowed me the chance to attend the Model U.N., where I was asked to address today's top world issues. This club was very beneficial to me because I was exposed to topics and ideas that I had not previously been able to discuss or learn about in a classroom situation. The science club allowed for me to experience extra educational situations as well. I took part in a hovercraft competition, which was very educational while also allowing me the chance to work with others for a common goal.
In college, I will also be exposed to new clubs and activities. I feel that club and after school activities can make a person more involved and give a person the right qualities to become a leader. Involvement in extra events has provided a balance for rigorous course study. With the pressures that college brings, I will probably want to be involved in many groups.
You’ve heard the advice before “get involved, join a club”, at the University of Montana (UM) we are a very large commuter college, involvement is a good way to develop relationships with other students and to create a sense of community for yourself and others.
I would attend the school pep rallies, football games, join the school powerlifting club, and school dances like Homecoming and Prom. Although these annual school events were fun and memorable, volunteering for community service hours holds a special relationship with me. It helped me realize my passion for helping people in a socially and physical way. This passion accompanied with my hobby of exercising led me to pursue the career of a physical therapist. In general, the experiences and lessons that I’ve adopted in American Canyon High School was truly life changing, and I’m grateful for it everyday.
Once we were done sightseeing we decided to head to Time Square and do some shopping. Before we got to Time Square, we saw a flea market and decided to stop and look around. They had just random things from the sellers like knives to Indian tribe trinkets.
