1.) The three main national TV networks in Canada are CTV, CBS and Global. CTV leads as the top private private broadcaster company in Canada. CTV features programming with local quality news updates, sports news, entertainment news and news from all around the world. According to CTV, they have been Canada’s most watched network for the last twelve years. CTV is owned by Bell Media which is very well known in the world of TV, radio, digital and also out of home media.

They are all advertising upcoming seasons or episodes with trailers and with the air dating. CTV.ca is promoting companies on the side of the website along with the header and footer of it. Its promoting Petro Canada’s “Fuel your chance to win” in partnership with The Amazing Race Canada and Air Canada’s “Win the world’s contest” ad. It also has teasers of upcoming episodes that CTV airs on the homepage.
GlobalTV.ca has a headline of all upcoming TV episodes premiering that week with a link to show’s website, to view upcoming trailer of episode along with episode summary. The main ad I noticed was a Big Brother advertisement located on the footer of page with sneak peeks of the episode coming up. The footer of the website also has social media extensions showing feed of Twitter/ Facebook.
3.) All three companies (CTV, CBS, Global TV) all promotes Canadian TV shows online. CBS was featuring, Canadian Country Music Awards and 22 Minutes. CTV was featuring The Amazing Race Canada and their entertainment segment “Etalk”. Global was mainly highlighting the new season of Big Brother

This is especially true of developed nations where media access is readily available to the average citizen. The media has contributed to the creation of ideologies and ideals within a society. The media has such an effect on social life, that a simple as a news story has the power to shake a nation. Because of this, governments around the world have made it their duty to be active in the regulation and control of media access in their countries. The media however, has quickly become dominated by major mega companies who own numerous television, radio and movie companies both nationally and internationally. The aim of these companies is to generate revenue and in order to do this they create and air shows that cater to popular demand. In doing so, they sometimes compromise on the quality of their content. This is where public broadcasters come into perspective.
The Columbia Broadcasting Company or “CBS” in layman’s terms was founded in 1927 as a radio network under the “United Independent Broadcasters” name, which was a radio-broadcasting network. The name was changed to CBS in 1928, which was the same year that William S. Paley, the son of a cigar making tycoon, took over control of CBS with his fathers financial support. Paley took over CBS for $400,000 and inherited a network that consisted of 22 affiliates and 16 employees. Although he had little technical knowledge of radio, Paley believed he could only attract advertisers if he delivered large audiences. To fulfill this goal, he decided to give CBS programming to local radio stations for free, as long as they agreed to surrender any part of their schedule to advertiser sponsored CBS network shows. In less than a decade, CBS had blossomed to 114 stations from 22 when Paley took over. Another one of Paley’s gifts was his ability to recognize talent, he quickly signed mega stars such as Bing Crosby, Kate Smith and Morton Downey. But such was the case in those days, those stars were quickly lured away by highly popular rival NBC for more money.

In order for Canada to share an equal part in the overall media industry as any other country, Canadian content regulations must be in place. CanCon regulations should be enforced on Canadian media content, as it is a crucial aspect of national culture, representative of the country as a whole. Without such regulations determined by CanCon, Canadian society risks becoming lost within the commotion of international media and their varied interests.

Taras reinstates the turning point of Canada Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and their relationship with the Canadian parliament. He addressed on the developments and struggles Public Service Broadcasters (PSB), specifically CBC, encounter in order to continue to telecast. Lastly, he explains that PSB has a major role in maintaining the balance of power between the government and the mass media. PSB were created by the public for the public because a democracy can only happen if everyone cooperates.
