On Friday, February 19th at 4 P.M. in Farber hall. I went to the “Tumbeleweed” creative reading event where three graduate students read their pieces of fiction and/or poetry. The first to read was the handsome David Levine, a graduate student at USD who is pursuing a PhD in Literary Studies. He started off with a humorous piece that began by stating that he knew this guy who was a massive dick, and then continued to talk about how much of a dick his was. This was a nice icebreaker opening that set the mood for his works. He continued to use humor in his story telling when he read to us what seemed to be memories. My favorite part of his reading was a story in which he got hurt in a dumb way and went to a hospital where he became infatuated
David McCullough Jr., delivered the commencement at Wellesley High School in Massachusetts on June 1st 2012 to staff, the 2012 graduates, and their family and friends. The speech was straightforward and supplied valuable information for their future. . McCullough’s speech at times felt harsh, offensive, and insulting. His words and examples were given to achieve insight, knowledge, and awareness for each student’s future. The commencement expressed a great deal of achievement, but conveyed that there was more work to be done. His speech was effective and appreciated through humor parallelism, repetition, and anaphora. His point of view has obtained respect and determination by all those that have been challenged and have heard his words.
In my 1109 class our task for eight weeks was to observe a tutor and writer working together during fifty minute sessions. This took place at the Writer’s Studio here on Newark’s OSU campus. The tutor I observed was Wyatt Bowman and the student was Adam Bielby. Ad...
Psychologist claim that if a friendship lasts seven years, that it will last a lifetime. On the other hand, the novel, A Tequila Worm claims that to be a true friend, a comadre, you have to learn to become a comadre. I’ve always struggled to make friends (comadres). Not because I’m mean, but because I’m extremely introverted when it comes to the idea of socializing and not many people I’ve encountered accept my personality. I was able to connect to this novel because I have been blessed with the chance despite my struggle to make friends to have one and honestly that’s all I need. I have a one best friend, my comadre, my partner in crime. From the experiences Nanas and I have shared for the past seventeen years, I was able to connect to the friendship (comadrismo) Sofia and Berta portrayed in the novel, The Tequila Worm by viola Canales. Nanas
The use of Richard Hoggart’s The Uses of Literacy in this story is very thought-provoking. While we are presented with the image of a young Richard Rodriguez and his struggle to deal with his education and family life. We are also presented Hoggart’s image of the “Scholarship boy” the student who has ...
An interesting person can be someone with many talents. With a total of sixty four awards, Ted Kooser is an interesting person because of his ability to write award winning poetry, nonfiction books, and children 's books. Ted Kooser’s writings are often plainspoken and filled with literary devices. “Kooser’s poetry is understated yet manages to skillfully illuminate the small moments of life,”(Local Wonders 5). This is demonstrated in Kooser’s life as he will often sit in his reading chair writing essay’s or poems about a bug on the wall, or an activity a neighbor did. Kooser’s ability to be a diverse writer allows him to be one of the best writers of the twenty-first century. Kooser’s experience of attending
Each one in the group had different interpretation of the readings that challenged and helped me to grow. I learned that the world is very diverse. A poem written by Jan Beatty "Saving the Crippled Boy", was a challenging poem for me and my colleagues. It helped me to learn to be non judgmental. It portrayed the word "saving" in unfamiliar way to me. I questioned about the appropriate way of charity. According to my values and belief, giving my body to someone is not charity or service. However, as a social worker, it made me conscious about the differences in the World. Also, the class reading helped me to connect my personal experiences, values, and Ethics with the society I am living, Understand the cultural differences and oppression systems in the

On Thursday, April 6, I attended the first show of the Neuqua Valley Monologue Show. The three shows I took notice on the most were Michael Vivo’s “Buddhism, Brainwaves… and Bill Murray”, Evan Morales’s “Junior year: The Video Game”, and Eleanor Giracalone’s “Lockdown.”
“The Hobart Shakespearian” blew me away on so many levels, and they all stem back to what this one teacher is willing to do for his students. I couldn’t believe that the Mr. Esquith used to work four jobs to take his students on trips, or that a former student made a nonprofit just for his class. That fact there, it ...
The Fall for the Book event that I have attended featured the novelists Dana Cann and Joe McGinnis Jr. Unfortunately, I did not know until after the event, when I had to ask one of the staff members, that McGinnis Jr. had cancelled his showing the same day. Seeing the many empty seats in the event, I had chosen to sit in the back because it was less intimidating. When the event started, the empty seats were left as they were and I was able to count fifteen attendees. This low turnout caused me to feel sorry for these novelists but I tried not to let that affect my judgment on my first Fall for the Book event.
Over the years I have spent working on my education, I have encountered numerous teachers who have had a significant impact on who I am as a person and how I conduct myself. One such person was an English teacher of mine Mrs. Schwartz. She was my teacher for honors English 10 and advanced placement English 12. Mrs. Schwartz was always a very kind woman. She always encouraged us and pushed us to do our best. She was like a mother figure to those in her classroom; it was obvious she cared about each and every one of us and how to help us reach our educational potentials. I still remember when we were assigned our end of the year portfolio, I chose a short story by Neil Gaiman to analyze. Unbeknownst to me, Neil Gaiman was a favorite author of
During my 11th grade year of high school, I heard many great things about the AP english teacher, Mr. Bergeron. While I was in AP English, I did not have Mr. Bergeron as my teacher. The students Mr. Bergeron had talked so highly on him and the class environment he seemed to set up. While, I wished I was in his class my 11th grade year, little did I know, that a year later I would be in one of his courses. For my senior year I got to take an honors course with Mr. Bergeron that allowed me to tutor freshman's who struggled with learning. Taking Mr. Bergeron’s class and having him as a teacher, would change how I viewed certain aspects of my life.

This event was presented by Scripts College on their campus in Claremont, California. I first heard about this event from my writing teacher and decided to go to see what happens at Literary Events. This was my first Literary Reading I had ever gone to. The event was very professional and the author’s talked in conversation with one another about what inspires them and their own writing processes. The authors talked for about forty-five minutes then took questions from the audience. I had not read anything from either of the authors so when they would talk about their books and stories I couldn’t fully relate. Although I haven’t read their works, it was exciting to be there and hear them talk about the creative process.
