What does it feel like to be proven wrong? When one tells the truth, people say different. Dance being a sport is a huge debate still going on today. What makes a sport? By definition, a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” Through the 3 years of dance, it became a huge part of my life [ethos]. Dance allows the feelings felt by one to presence by telling a story of the song and the movements. (pathos) Without dance, people don’t get the right memory skills or even the ways of working with a team.
Dance presents a human desire for personal expression and social connection. According to Jenna Garecht, author of “Is Dance a Sport or and
Art,” found that “To be able to dance well, one needs to be flexible, strong, have stamina, have endurance and most importantly have the love for what they do.” [logos] One of my close friends takes dance classes 6/7 times a week and without her strength, passion, and belief in practicing she wouldn’t have a desire for the personal experience brought upon her. I have seen many injuries in dance, one of my dancer friends has a hurt knee and can’t perform in the recital, it is hard to witness anyone going through an injury (anecdote). Sports allows you to be yourself, without any judgment and gives someone a choice of what they want to do. People can show awareness towards dance by spreading the idea about it and allowing the experience of it. Although dance can be looked at as an art, it is a sport as well. Professional dancers work just as hard as basketball and football players. Thank you for allowing me to discuss the idea of dance.
By universal definition, "sport" is listed as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.
Sports have been around for many years and are used for entertainment. Basketball to football and karate to soccer, but what about dance? For many years, dance has been considered an art. Dance is just like any other sport, so why does it not get the “sports” label? Dance should be considered a real sport because it is just as dangerous as any other sport, dancers compete, and dance requires just as much discipline as any other sport.
Is dance a sport or not? Some people in our world today consider dance just to be all frilly and fragile. Dance takes time, effort, determination and impeccable strength. I believe that dance is a sport because it has the same components as any other sport. In any other sport you need to work hard with a lot of effort, and that is exactly what dancers do. For example, most beginning dancers practice between five to ten hours a week. Although most people in our world today look at dancing as nothing more than tutus and twirling, a good dancer must have a mind mentally engaged, a body able to endure physical challenges, and toned dedication and skill.
In order for me to answer this question I’d have to split my answer into two categories, physically and mentally. Physically, dance has given me many wonderful things, such as plenty of cut open toes, bruised knees, sore muscles, and lastly, even one surgery! However, if you were to ask me what dance has done for me mentally, I'd simply say, "Everything." I believe that there is not a single part of me that hasn't been enhanced because of dance. Dance has a very special place in my heart, it was the first thing I fell in love with, and has brought me a lifetime of memories.
If you think back to when you were in school, was there always a person picked last while picking teams for a game of kickball? The problem with using sports as a way to exercise is that they're competitive, create arguments, can make a person feel down by not being picked first for a team, and can often make a person injured. Dance isn't competitive and yet it's still a wonderful way to stay fit. It may be even better than sports at helping kids be healthy. In fact, the article written by Rebecca Lake called The Benefit of Dance For Kids, says that "The repetitive movements involved in dance can improve muscle tone, correct poor posture, increase balance and coordination and improve overall cardiovascular health.
So you think you can’t dance? You might want to ask yourself that question again. If you already did, and you still think you can’t, then ask yourself that question several times until you think you can. Dancing is not difficult, you just move with the rhythm of the song. This is not a test; there is no right or wrong answers, or in this case, movements. Yes, you might look a bit funny at first, but no one dances the same, so that should be an incentive for those non dancers to give it a try. For centuries, dancing has been used in ceremonies, celebrations, and entertainment, but the positive attributes that come along with dancing are much greater than what is seen. Before you keep reading, I want to make something clear. No, I’m not referring to dancing as ballet, folklore, or tap dancing; those may be too difficult or “advanced” for many of us, including myself. When I mention dancing, I refer to it as its dictionary definition, “to move one’s feet or body, or both in a pattern of steps, accompanied by music.” This demonstrates that dancing is something we are all capable of doing, we just need to be willing to try. So now that this is clear, let’s continue learning about one of the positive effects of dancing. Dancing has far more positive aspects than entertainment, dancing is a way to release stress and minimize depression, while creating a positive and healthy environment.
Dance can be to any music, noise, silence, or words, which simply means that dance does not need sound but counts which often can just be the dancer’s breath or the rhythm of a spoken word. According to Myriam Frederick, “if music didn’t exist then there would probably be different ways of dancing and they might be called different things, but the need of expression with the body would remain as a necessity in the human race (M. For other dancers, there is a competition between music and the dance, which is why they believe dancing without music eliminates any and all distractions with the focus being totally on the dance for both the performer and the audience. Learning the skills and knowledge a dancer can learn and teach themselves through the movement of their body. The purpose of dance is to express the symbolic culture it presents. It takes many performance skills such as focus, body strength, musicality timing, flexibility, and passion. By developing these skills, can slowly piece together all the meaning of the movements in a dance.
