Introduction
The design and performance of America’s school districts are under the pressure of escalating domestic and international competition and swift advancements in information technology. The reality of the shift in the social, economic, and culture means that education experts must act with transformational changes that aim to position schools and its students for effective and efficient collaboration and competition with local and global communities. The strength of the American economy is inextricably linked to the strength of America’s education system; American economy needs a workforce that is skilled, adaptable, creative, and equipped for success in the global marketplace (Office of Vocational and Adult Education, 2012).
This type of transformational change requires leadership within the school system that is equipped with tools and vision to redesign the systemic way in which teaching and learning takes place, as well as transforming the mindsets of education personnel throughout the transformation journey in order to provide high-quality education for students as they prepare for the aggressive nature of the Knowledge Age. Now that knowledge work predominates in our society, America needs school systems that have as their purpose to ensure that every child who enters public education leaves having mastered a variety of important knowledge and skills so they can succeed in the 21st century Knowledge Age (Duffy, 2010).
