The leadership roles in your life greatly influence what kind of person someone will become, as well as how much self-esteem one will have. There are two different types of leadership, transactional and transformational. Transactional leadership, known as managerial leadership, focuses on the role of supervision, organization, and group performance. This type of leadership promotes compliance through both rewards and punishments. On the contrary, transformational leadership enhances motivation, morale, and performance through a variety of mechanisms. This type of leadership inspires and keeps the followers interested. Unlike high school teachers, college professors set high expectations, promote intelligence, and instill pride within their …show more content…
Teachers routinely teach you the standardized things you need to know to get promoted to the next grade. In my experience, throughout high school, once you acquire the knowledge to pass the test, high school teachers believe you have reached your potential and no longer push you to accomplish more. Unlike, high school teachers, professors are willing to provide an abundance of support to any student sincerely trying to improve. Not only do college professors help students recognize their potential, but become the driving force behind them exceeding their personal expectations. Professors continuously clarify what matters and why it matters; therefore, instilling a sense of pride in their work, as well as in themselves. Leadership styles can greatly affect a person 's performance and sense of self-worth. While both high school teachers and college professors share the same objective, to see evidence that their works and teachings made a difference, they lead in two different ways. College professors assertively drive students to become the best they can be. The high expectations they set, along with an almost overwhelming feeling of accomplishment, mold you into a better student and
In conclusion, all types of leadership are similar in ways such as taking initiative or setting the example. However, different types of leadership have a different perspective depending on the situation. Combat leadership is high-risk and requires a single-unquestioned authority. A certain level of responsibility and decisiveness is necessary. On the other hand, leadership in the dorm has an entirely different perspective, one of patience, listening, and finding a thought-out solution. Both leaders are necessary to lead the group, but differ dramatically in style based on the
Borkowski (2015) distinguished between transactional leadership and transformational leadership by explaining that: transactional leadership is directed toward task accomplishment and the maintenance of good relations between the leader and subordinates throw consideration of performance and reward. And, Transformational leadership, contrasting transactional leadership, is directed toward the influence and management of institutional change and innovation through revitalization and
Bass (1990) states that transformational leadership is identified by different patterns of behavior. Firstly , transformational leadership delivers the charisma to be a leader in order to gain respect and trust. Secondly, the characteristics of a leader show efforts to change a purpose of the transformation process and to effectively communicate. Finally, transformational leadership proposes that leaders treat employees individually to show them attention and provide them coaching and advice to show that you care about your employees. However, Wang and Howell (2010) claim that transformational leadership is in every individual. This means an individual can develop their potential to enhance their abilities and skills to improve and overcome any weaknesses. In relation to group work transformational leadership helps to grow common values and beliefs, and to inspire group members to reach their group goals. In this type of situation, leaders treat equally towards members and to make them feel comfortable. However, on occasions problems occur during team work which puts a leader into a situation to overcome the condition. For example, if one of my team members has no belief in me to lead the group, my attitude towards the group and the member will change as they have shown a lack of confidence and interest in teamwork. According to Novicevic, Harvey, Buckley, Brown & Evans (2006) explains that authentic leadership is when a leader shows their individual responsibility in what they were responsible for in their organization. Novicevic, Harvey, Buckley, Brown & Evans (2006) discusses a particular style of leadership which is the matrix of executive leadership. This style of leadership occurs when a leader has lost confidence in them self. The
According to our text book there are two main classifications of leadership approaches, transformational leadership and transactional leadership (Yoder-Wise, 2011). Transformational leadership is centered on motivation and building relationships with staff through a shared vision and mission (Frandsen, 2013). Transactional leadership approach involves one superior with minimum or no input from the employees (Yoder-Wise, 2011).
Giltinane (2013) identifies three leadership styles. The first is transactional leadership in which a leader is controlling and functions in a reward and punishment environment. In transactional leadership style, leaders give little room for employees to express ingenuity. Decisions are passed laterally from top down and the form of leadership is to stress obedience rather than loyalty. Transactional leadership is closely related to autocratic style (Giltinane, 2013).
Based on Burns (1978) there are two types of basic leadership styles, transformational and transactional. Transactional leaders are in contact with an individual for an exchange that will occur between them while transformational leaders motivate and connect with their followers
Discuss the role of leadership and how it can impact organizational performance. The role of leadership is the most important part of an organization. Leadership is having the ability to influence people to trust, believe and follow the vision. There are several different types of leadership styles such as transactional, leader- member exchange, and authentic to name a few. Transactional leadership appeal to an employee’s self-interest which involves motivation in some way to get the employee to do what is needed. This leader mostly deals with employees achieving a goal, then being rewarded for accomplishments. “Leader-member exchange suggests that leaders develop different relationships with each of their subordinates through a series of work-related transactions.” (Hellriegel and Slocum, 2011, p.323) This leadership is a type of bonding between leader and employee or obligation to each other. Authentic leadership deals with a person’s knowledge of self, their beliefs, values, and acting on a clear faith system through honesty and communication with employees. This leadership is more personal than the others because it pulls from an individuals’ personal belief value system.
Leadership is not defined by position. Leadership is an extraordinary responsibility given only to those willing to exude selflessness, decisiveness, and wisdom. CSM William R. Hambrick, Jr is an accomplished leader that embodies the values, attributes, and competencies that I aspire to convey to my subordinates. The impact that CSM Hambrick has had on my career and leadership philosophy is immeasurable. His far-reaching legacy is one of confidence, sound judgment, and empathy.
In conclusion, transactional and transformational leadership can be merged or used individually depending on various circumstances. However, they are partially correlated. In order to make the best use and get the desirable results out of these principles, leaders should attain a deep understanding of each theory as they are dissimilar in conducting. Moreover, an appropriate balance should be considered if leaders aim to integrate them together. In my point of view, either stand alone or combination usage would benefit to any organizations if the application of leaders was taken in proper situations.
Aside from the students, high school and college would be meaningless without its faculty. Most teachers and professors in high school and college are well-educated individuals. They have spent some years studying to obtain a teaching degree. As teachers and professors, their main concern (or goal) is for the student to learn, understand, and master the course they teach. The teacher or professor may accomplish this goal by reviewing the material, emphasizing key points, or providing the students with examples that they could easily relate to. Most of them are willing to dedicate extra time to help the student meet his or her needs. Several high school teachers, as well as some college professors go beyond reading, writing, and arithmetic. They teach you about life in general, all its hardships and all its rewards. Receiving a good education is great, but enhancing your individuality and growing as a person is just as important. Some teachers and professors discuss their own personal experiences and lessons, which they have encountered throughout life. These lessons in life could impact the student and educ...
Some people believe leadership and management are one in the same; however, this is not true because management involves planning, staffing, directing and controlling and, a manager is a person who performs these functions (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009). The term manager is a formal title given to a person who has authority by virtue of his or her position or office. (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009) Leadership, by contrast, is about influence; leaders use factors other than just their formal authority to influence subordinates. There are three major leadership theories developed from the 1930s to the 1970s which attempt to explain why some leaders are better than others, these theories are: trait leadership (1930s and 1940s), behavior leadership (1940s and 1950s), and contingency leadership (1960s and 1970s).

Having a good career, whether it pays well or because the student is passionate about it, helps make it easier. Majors, minors, and electives stretch from criminal justice and chemistry, to dance and music. Although the level of grading and schoolwork gets more challenging through the years, college education offers many things high school education simply couldn’t. Paulo Freire best describes the difference between high school education and college. “Worse yet, it turns them into “containers,” into “receptacles” to be “filled” by the teacher” (p.58). In high school, the curriculum that is used to teach their students often focuses on memorizing, and not about actual teaching. This is different in college. Professors are in charge of leading students into a greater based knowledge of both what they are being taught inside of the classroom and outside, and it is the student 's job to learn. Professors go through thousands of students everyday in their classes, but their schedules are flexible. Students have the ability to make appointments with their teachers if they have trouble in their classes, and classes are often a maximum of three per week which helps the student have more time to complete assignments and work. The schedule
The leadership role at a brand new community hospital can be very challenging, and can even require from the best of leaders to reevaluate their leadership styles. In my business ethics class, we learned that a good leader must establish corporate values and promote corporate ethics. They must embrace change, stress accountability, and responsibility. During my internship at the Hillsborough Hospital Campus, I had the privilege to meet and talked to managers from different department of the hospital to learn about their leadership style. Each of the managers I spoke to explained to me why their leadership style work best for them. The three leadership styles that I found to be common among the managers are the concept of empowering in leadership,
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
