Issues Chipotle Faces:
Chipotle Mexican Grill is a fast-food chain that faces a variety of human behavior challenges within their organization. One of the main issues Chipotle faces is employee satisfaction. This issue was highlighted in a Fast Company article written by Adele Peters which stated, “The company’s employees aren’t always satisfied: A group of nearly 10,000 workers sued in 2016, saying Chipotle had forced them to work off the clock, and another group sued in June 2017 arguing they were owed overtime pay” (Peters). A second major issue discovered while researching Chipotle was leadership or management problems. After reading over fifty employee reviews on glassdoor, a public website where current and former employees assess businesses,

Trait theories of leadership are “theories that consider personal qualities and characteristics that differentiate leaders from nonleaders” (Robbins 333). These theories state that a company should look for certain characteristics when selecting managers. There are six main traits research has deemed traits of effective leaders. These traits are emotional intelligence and the Big Five Model traits which include: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience. Companies can give personality tests or quizzes to employee candidates to find people who rank high in these …show more content…
These theories propose that different behaviors differentiate between leaders and nonleaders. An Ohio State Study determined the two main behaviors that leaders need are initiating structure and consideration (Robbins). They found that people who demonstrate these two behavior types tend to be better leaders. Companies can train their leaders on these two important behaviors by investing in leadership training such as courses, workshops, and team building exercises.
The situational leadership theory is another leadership theory Chipotle could attempt to implement in its managers. This theory focuses more on followers’ readiness. It states that leaders need to adjust their leadership style based on the situation they are facing and who their followers are. If Chipotle wishes to have their managers follow this theory, they need to find leaders who are adaptable and provide some training to these employees.
Finally, Chipotle managers could look into enacting a mentoring program in their restaurants. A mentor is “a senior employee who sponsors and supports a less-experienced employee, called a protégé” (Robbins 355). Implementing a mentoring program could help solve Chipotle’s training issues and help employees create and maintain relationships and communicate with each other. It would also give each employee someone to confide in during stressful time in the

In addition to that the culture of openness and not holding information for so long on important issues in the company makes it possible for the investors and employees make tough and timely decisions without having in mind the negative consequences that they may be facing if anything goes wrong. Chick-fil-A encourages the employees to be continuously innovative and lead the way in making little decisions both in the kitchen and at service space. For example employees are allowed to modify ingredients of food to feed special customers’ needs. The segmentation of the management structure on the other hand facilitates the ease of communication.
On the technological side Chipotle has turned their attention to bettering their services through a variety of channels. In 2014 Chipotle invest “$10 million to redesign its technology network and add mobile payments to its ordering app, among other improvements” (Wong, 2014). Also, with the emergence of services like Uber Eats and GrubHub Chipotle online ordering and delivery has never been faster. Payment processes have sped up which improves customs ability and convince which shows that Chipotle is focused on operational proficiency and customer
Under corporate governance, the Board of Directors has majority power. After shareholders elect the Board, said Board selects the CEO who is responsible for managing the business. The key problem with Chipotle’s central and formal governance is that their strategy does not encourage innovation or employee moral. Instead, the Board of Directors decides what they feel Chipotle’s franchisees should implement, and tells managers to relay their decisions to in-store employees. Therefore, corporate representatives strive to improve in-store quality through strict supervision of each franchisee. They make decisions regarding all processes from the preparation of the product, customer service, and marketing strategies, which are enforced at each location. This system is slow and decreases efficiency. Since store employees are kept out of the immediate circle, it is difficult for them to have confidence in Chipotle’s operations, resulting in low employee empowerment. Two solutions to consider include bridging gaps between hierarchical levels and making the company more decentralized. Chipotle can implement a few liaisons (brokers and structural holes) to make sure that all professional networks within corporate and store levels are communicating effectively and working as a

The big 5 personality traits model measures the five largest dimensions of a person’s personality. The first one is openness, which measures a person’s level of creativity as well as their desire for knowledge and new experiences (O’Neill & Allen, 2011). The second trait is conscientiousness, which determines an individual’s level of care in their life and work. If they have high conscientiousness, they are very organized and thorough they make plans and follow those plans (O’Neill & Allen, 2011). The third trait is extraversion/introversion. In addition, extroversion person is outgoing and sociable and in introversion person is quiet and work well alone (O’Neill & Allen, 2011). The fourth is agreeableness and looks at a person’s level of friendliness or kindness to others as well as their level empathy and whether or not they synthesize with others (O’Neill & Allen, 2011). The last is natural reactions and can be referred to as a person’s emotional state ability, which measures how people react to situations (O’Neill & Allen, 2011). All five of these traits have an impact on how people react in teams and how team members react to
The Trait Theory points out that there is a certain type of person making a good leader, with the decisive factor being: having or not having distinctive qualities of being a leader. Despite that, being an effective leader can still be a challenge. External and internal influences impact the effectiveness of the program and must be considered in order to succeed. Which leads us to the Behavioural Theory, thinking of what a good leader actually does. Kurt Lewin developed three leadership types, such as the autocratic leader who is a maker, someone who makes decisions without consultation with others.
The Traits theory, otherwise known as the Great Man theory, is the origination of leadership theories. This theory believes that there is a unique set of qualities for a leader, mainly: his intelligence and ability to judge, his knowledge power, self-confidence and dependabil...
The learning obtained from the Leadership and Organizational Behavior course has been valuable. From this course, I have learned that while someone can be a manager or a leader, it is better to be both. The various topics discussed throughout the eight week course have provided the unique insight necessary to be an effective leader. The insight gained allow for the identification of the behaviors that an effective leader must possess and continually develop. By identifying these behaviors, I am better able to shape my leadership style and goals so that I can achieve my full career potential as a leader within my organization. Ultimately, I realize that it is important to both do things right and do the right things in all my actions within an organization.
After understanding the theory behind both the trait and skill approach, I was eager to evaluate and reflect on my own leadership traits. It was interesting to see how the trait approach allowed me to better understand whether or not I have certain traits considered to be important for leadership, while skills approach allowed me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses in the technical, human and conceptual skills. From completing the Leadership Trait Questionnaire (LTQ) and the Skills Inventory, I was able to reflect more on how I behave towards others in a leadership context, as well as the skills that I currently possess. As a naturally extroverted person, I have been taking on leadership roles from a young age. The findings from these two
The most important quality that differentiates a leader from other people is the ability to think strategically. Vision is the most important aspect that drives a leader’s strategy. It is all about where you want to be. Other qualities include Decision making, problem solving, time management, self-motivation, emotional intelligence and many more. Once we know the type of leadership, it is easy to find what leadership skills we have and which we need to develop which is explained in the book “Leadership: Theory, application, skill development (5th ed.) by Lussier and Achua.” Also, Keirsey Style Sorter personality type helps to knowing our temperament type, and work on our weakness and to emerge out as a good leader.
Another aspect of leadership includes leadership traits such as being influential and inspirational. There also different contexts of leadership, e.g, leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organizations. Some traits that are often associated with being an effective leader include a measure of intelligence, high energy, self confidence, dominance, and a need for achievement. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully.
