“Andragogy is based on a number of assumptions about the adult learner. The European…meaning “the art of science of helping adults learn,”…” (Merriam, Caffarella & Baumgartner, 2007, p. 84) Adult learners need to have the ability to be self-directed, to be accepted as a peer, to have their experiences acknowledged, to have assistance and respect from the instructors, staff, and colleagues. Adult students do not learn the same as younger students because experience and past knowledge has formed a great wealth of wisdom in the adult’s informational range. Adult learning is in direct relation to the knowledge gained by the adult students.
TRADITIONAL LEARNING CONTEXT
How does one learn from only a lecture? This question has been asked many times but just as often, there is no real answer. I, for one, am not a lecture learner and struggled in a few of my undergraduate classes. I was attending Henderson Community College and to cover all of my general education requirements I had to take two history classes. I had decided to attend summer classes, through an online format so my family and I could camp and take vacations during the summer. The class that I struggled with the most could have been described as non-traditional and traditional.
This particular history class, History of Kentucky was being taught out of Eastern Kentucky University and had two, one hour required live seminars weekly. During the live seminars the instructor would lecture continuously, there was no interaction between student and instructor, and no visual aids of any kind. For a solid hour I was required to sit and listen to an even-keel drone speech from an instructor that had a thick southern accent. The true purpose of the lectures were never clear to me...

CONCLUSION
The difference between a traditional learning environment and an adult learning environment is vast. The traditional learning environment generally will take place in a brick and mortor institute; whereas an adult learning environment can take place within any higher learning capacity. As I described my own situation, I took an online class and was still thrust into a lecture environment. The lecture environment is teacher centered in contrast to the adult learning environment that is more student centered. Finally the adult learning environment is based on the individual adult, how they view things, their past experiences, their motivations for learning, and their own initiative.

Adults are self-motivated. They learn best by building on what they already know and when they are actively engaged (Lindeman, 2010). The approach of adult education revolves around non-vocational ideals and is based on experience rather than subjects (Lindeman, 2010). It helps adults gain knowledge about their powers, capacities, and limitations (Funnell et al, 2012).

This essay is to consider and discuss how I might apply the theories of Malcolm Knowles, in my own current or future training work. The essay will include a brief biography on Malcolm Knowles, and his theory on adult education / learning andragogy, to include definitions of andragogy and pedagogy, which has been the mainstay of all education theory for hundreds of years.

One theorist that is relevant to this study is Malcolm Knowles’s theory of adult learning. Though Malcom Knowles may not be the first one to introduce adult learning, he was the one that introduced andragogy in North America. (McEwen and Wills 2014). Andragogy means adult learning. The core concept of Knowles’s Adult learning theory is to create a learning environment or awareness for adults to understand why they learn .Knowles developed six main assumptions of adult learners. Those assumptions are the need to know, self- concept, experience, readiness to learn, orientation to learning and motivation. (McEwen and Wills, 2014)
The learning process for adults is never ending and can be very challenging. As an adult educator, teaching adult learners you will face many challenges in the learning process. It is our responsibility to keep the learners engaged, and to help them to realize their full learning potential.
What is the difference between a.. Self-concept of the learner- Adult learners are naturally self-directed which means they will take ownership of what and how to learn and how to manage their time and learning. 3. What is the difference between a'smart' and a'smart'? Prior Experience- Adults have a lot of previous experience which may help them understand situations better, or it may make them biased toward learning new material, ideals or strategies.
Andragogy, made famous in the United States by Malcom Knowles in 1967, is the art and science of teaching adult learners as opposed to pedagogy which is the art and science of teaching but not distinguishing what age group (Rachel, 2002). Knowles implemented andragogy through the use of a learning contract, in which learning objectives, strategies and resources, achievement, and methods for evaluation are all determined by both the learner and instructor (2002).
Analysis: having been through the adult learning experience I have realised the roll of learner and teacher in this approach. An effective teacher can facilitate the development of independence, self confidence, learning satisfaction and help students (the learner) to critical think. This experience has taught me that there are different styles of learning and teaching that I can adopt in my future.
Teaching the adult student is a great and unique responsibility; Andragogy preaches that teaching the adult learner takes a certain skill set and approach in order to be highly effective. The adult teaching theory and approach is based off the characteristics of the adult student. Andragogy views the adult learner as a very highly motivated student, a student ready and prepared to learn, and a student that comes to class with expectations of learning (Knowles 1984, pg12). With such a capable learner in the classroom the teacher must make the necessary adjustments. When teaching the adult learner, the teacher will have respect for their students and respect the fact that each student will have their own individual learning style. The teacher will also allow the adult student to experie...
Knowles believed that instruction was based on conditions defined by the learner needs and not on the structured curriculum (Blondy, 2007). Furthermore, this theory determined that adult learners would most likely learn better if they were actively engaged in the process of education. The learners’ experiences were another factor acknowledged by Knowles (1984) because of the roles adult learners have in society (Blondy, 2007). Knowles (1984) recognized that certain experiences such as the way adult learners thinks, act, or defined themselves could negatively influence their learning experiences (Blondy, 2007).
Within the andragogical model described by Knowles, Holton, and Swanson (2015), adults need learning experiences that are different than those found in the pedagogical model. Instead of waiting for experiences that are directed and controlled by a teacher, adults need to have a clear rationale and understanding for the learning, feel past experiences are valuable, and have a developed internal system for motivation in order to help a learning experience be successful. The connection and orientation to the learning task, the readiness to learn, and self-concept are other important ideas to adult learning.
Andragogy is focusing on creating good learning experiences for adults(2013). Here, we should understand some assumptions about the boundary of adult and pre-adult. First , Adult learner can do self-direct learning (chapter 4), and can study independent than the pre-adult or children who are totally learning rely on teachers---learner’s self-concept, also this part is the most engaged part with learning. The second assumption is the most impressive and helpful. Adult learner have more experience than other learner, that means, adult’s prior experience have a big difference feeling or motivation with other adults. Take myself for example, when I was in high school, my orientation for study was went into a good University; whereas, right now, my orientation for study is to make my life different than before. It’s a internal motivation, because I experienced many things which I didn’t experienced in high school. The part “the need to know” makes me feel distanced from
Professor Ozuah mentioned that Edward C. Lindeman wrote lengthily about this subject of andragogy. Lindeman in 1926 stated that the way adults learned was by attacking the problem and thinking of ways to solve the situation not by what academic subject it fell under. Lindeman also stated that adults get self-gratification by solving a problem and coming up with a way to master the obstacles. (Ozuah) I do agree with both Professor Ozuah and Edward Lindeman. I know I feel better about my approach to teach when I watch my students use their intuition that the height of the building they just calculated with a protractor, straw, and tape measure doesn’t seem
