What Team? Raiders!

Track and field and cross country are often mistaken for each other at the high school level. When an athlete picks one’s brain to see if they know the difference between the two sports, the common answer is, “There is no difference! it’s the same thing!” This response given by multiple people truly enrages the dedicated athlete who eats, sleeps, and breathes these two very different sports (like me). Track and field and cross country take place in different seasons, different activities take place in each sport, along with a different team environment. Cross country is a physical and mental sport that takes courage as well as strength to complete the course of 3.1 miles. The course in the woods has the scent of rich earth as the runners strike their powerful legs on the terrain. The beautiful blue sky hides away behind the trees as the wind causes the leaves to shiver. Heavy breathing rings through the cross country course like a church bell in a small town. The taste of salty sweat dribbles into the runner’s face and burns their eyes, but they keep going. This sport takes place in autumn, when the leaves just begin to undress out of their green dresses and into their red, orange, and yellow ones. It is more favorable for athletes to compete in a fall sport due to the fact the temperatures are much cooler. Cross country consists of one event, running.
