Toxics in Lipstick
Lipstick is an essential to most women when it comes to appearance because it simply adds the extra visually appealing factor. Lipstick is also used to moisturize the lips, keeping them soft and reducing dryness. Little do most women know about the toxics in the cosmetic because then the cosmetic would be avoided by some if not most. According to pamf.org, a teenager uses 15-25 cosmetics in a day.
Lipstick is one of the cosmetics that have very harsh chemicals. The common ingredients found in most lipsticks are wax (beeswax, candelilla wax, or camauba wax), oil (mineral, lanolin, castor, or vegetable oil), preservatives and antioxidants, pigment, and fragrance. All of these common ingredients in lipstick have the effect of making the product rich and effective. These are the ingredients most people know are in the lipstick because they are included in most of the labels.
The hidden ingredients in most lipsticks are Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Retinyl Palmitate, D&C Red 36, D&C Red 22 Aluminum Lake, and Tocopheryl Acetate. Most of these harsh chemicals all have an effect of cancer or helps develop some form of disease. This is why most companies do not disclose this piece of information on its label, because they are afraid people will not purchase the object if they knew the effects of the harsh chemicals.
Many lipsticks are found to have traces of lead, this becomes more dangerous after the women starts licking their lips, or eating and drinking something because the lead has been consumed into the body and gets into their bloodstream. Obviously a little amount of lead does not have a major affect or harm at the time being, but these little things add up at the end and have a significant effect. Lead...

Fun fact:
Did you know foundation originated from the ancient Greeks who first used foundation to make their skin look paler? Having pale skin also meant the person was privileged.
Before:
The foundation used by the ancients Greeks mainly consisted of white lead powder, chalk, and cream. Many people were dying from the poisonous lead that was in the product.
Safe Alternative:
There are several companies that offer safe alternatives for customers. The following companies are said to be reliable, Weleda, Lavera ,Ecco Bella, and etc. These companies all have safe skin care products that can be trusted and used with none of the harsh chemicals that were found in common brand products of foundation.
Currently, over-drawn lips topped with a bold, heavy lipstick is a make-up trend. As teenage girls scroll through social media platforms, such as Instagram, they see “Instagram models” and celebrities just a little older than themselves sporting this look. In turn, they want to try out this same look, but do not have the 50 dollars these models and celebrities typically spend on a tube of lipstick. When the average teenage girl sees the advertisement for Burt’s Bees lipstick, they are drawn to buy the product. Odds are, they already trust the brand, as discussed in the previous paragraph, and they know it will be much more affordable than the lipsticks they see the girls on Instagram using.
Lead and lead compounds can be highly toxic when eaten or inhaled. Although lead is absorbed very slowly into the body, its rate of excretion is even slower. Thus, with constant exposure, lead accumulates gradually in the body. It is absorbed by the red blood cells and circulated through the body where it becomes concentrated in the soft tissues, especially the liver and kidneys. Lead can cause damage in the central nervous system and apparently can damage the cells making up the blood-brain barrier that protects the brain from many harmful chemicals.
Surprisingly, but true, the U.S. federal government does not need any health studies or pre-market analysis on personal care products (Sharps, 2013). Accordingly, many perfumed products in the market supposedly contain reproductive toxins, carcinogens, among other risky chemicals to good health. Besides, the bloodstream about up to about 60% of what we apply on our skin.

I learned that drugs and cosmetics often contain chemicals that can be hazardous or have dangerous side effects. For example, a brand of mascara called Lash Lure caused many women to go blind and one woman even died because it contained a chemical that burned the skin when used as directed. After about 100 people died from using a cough syrup called Elixir Sulfanilamide, which was made toxic by its production method, the American public was faced with a decision and it caused our government to pass the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in 1938.
CosmoCosmetics has decided to create a new foundation make up line for African American women exclusively. We believe there is a niche for this type of business since no make up brands specialise in this target.
A thought came to my head, I thought are all cosmetics really safe for your skin? It’s a question for all makeup users. What’s really in your mascara? Do you know what your really putting on your lips? Well I’ve done some research and came to the conclusion that there has been more and more hazardous chemicals lurking around in your favorite beauty products and skin care. There may be mercury in your mascara, or Endocrine disruptors in your lip-gloss. The FDA is looking into certain cosmetic brands to make sure they are healthy...
Lipsticks are used for making lips colourfull and they also give textures to the lips.
A woman should be both classy and fabulous. Make-up is no less than an art and hence today makeup is taken as a profession. Celebrities have their personal make-up staff and they are tagged as make-up artists. Lipstick is one thing that when chosen correctly creates magic. We want it all when it comes to beauty products for the lips: color, shine, quality, and an affordable price.
Most women are or know at least one woman who is deathly afraid of being seen or leaving the house without makeup. Many won’t go anywhere, whether to the grocery store, the gym, or even the beach, without first putting on a little bit of mascara or lipstick. The word cosmetic means “skilled in adornment.” Kosmein means “arrange,” or “adorn.” Kosmos means “order:” It also means “to make for beauty, especially of the complexion, or beautifying,” it also means “done or made for the sake of appearance,” or “correcting defects especially of the face.” More than that it is “decorative,” or “ornamental.” (Angeloglou, 1970) For many centuries, cosmetics were made to serve beauty, elaborate it, or promote it. But now it is viewed as an act of covering up, hiding or concealing, so which is it? The first record of makeup use comes from Ancient Egyptian and Sumerian tombs dating as far back as around 3500 BC. Tombs from this era have revealed unguent jars, which in later periods were scented. Unguent was a substance extensively used by men and women to keep their skin hydrated and supple and to avoid wrinkles from the dry heat. They used soot and other natural ingredients to paint their faces, and even had specialized tools to apply their makeup. However, paints and other means of self-decoration date back tens of thousands of years. Archaeological sites in South Africa provide evidence that body paint may have been used over 50,000 years ago, suggesting people painted their bodies before they even wore clothes. Even our closest relatives, the Neanderthals, may have worn makeup and jewelry. In some cultures, the use of cosmetics to enhance one’s appearance was limited only to the upper class. Thirteenth century affluent women wore pink lipst...
Again, don’t go with anything super glossy for the lips. You don’t want them to look too shiny, as it might not look as fun towards the tenth new layer you add throughout the day. A moisturising lipstick is a perfect option in your chosen colour. Furthermore, you want something that lasts a long time. Stila and Revlon are great brands to opt for. You can find them online and save with discount codes from OZCodes.
Some examples of harmful toxins with difficult names include diethanolamine (DEA), formaldehyde, glucocorticoids, and triethanolamine (TEA). We are exposed to toxic chemicals in many ways. We may breathe them in as sprays and powders, swallow chemicals on our lips and, even rub them on our skin. According to a team of researchers who conducted a study on the relationship between exposure to phthalates and DNA damage on human sperm, “cosmetics frequently contain enhancers that allow ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin. Studies have found health problems in people exposed to common fragrance and sunscreen ingredients, including increased risk of sperm damage, feminization of the male reproductive system and low birth weight in girls” (Duty et al. 1164). There should be regulations banning toxic chemicals from personal care and beauty products because toxins are bad for our health (1), the consumer faith in cosmetic companies are suffering (2), and other countries recognized the effects and banned it while America has not
Don’t apply lipsticks daily. Although very commonly used, lipsticks are full of chemicals which may lead to darkening of lips. Instead go for a tinted lip balm which has color instead of a lipstick for daily use.
