“To An Athlete Dying Young” by A.E. Houseman and “Crossing The Bar” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson are poems that very similar to each other yet so different. “To An Athlete Dying Young” is about an athlete who dies young and Houseman congratulates him because people will remember him forever. “Crossing the Bar” is about Tennyson realizing that he is about to die and he accepts his fate. Both poems have a similar theme of death. Both authors make clever uses of symbols such as, in “To An Athlete Dying Young,” Tennyson uses a laurel plant, and a rose plant to symbolize the athlete’s accomplishments. In “Crossing the Bar”, Tennyson uses the sandbar to symbolize the crossing over. However, the rhyme scheme of these poems is different. Houseman writes in the traditional AABB rhyme scheme and Tennyson writes in the ABAB rhyme scheme. Both poems have a similar view of death; they also have similar uses of symbols, but differ in rhyme schemes.
Both poems have a propitious view of the theme of death. In “To An Athlete Dying Young” Houseman praises the young athlete for dying relatively young. He says “smart lad…not stay (9-10).” Houseman tells the athlete that he was smart to die at a young age because he can no longer witness his glory fade away as he gets older. His interpretation of death is very ironic. Many people consider it a tragedy when an athlete dies young because the athlete cannot further his career anymore, but Houseman argues that an athlete should not further his career because once he is old, he is a shell of his former self. The rhyming patterns that Houseman uses establish a less serious tone while Tennyson’s formal use of the ABAB scheme establishes a more serious tone.
To An Athlete Dying Young and Crossing the bar are similar poems. They both have the theme of death. In to An Athlete Dying Young, Houseman is telling a young athlete that his fame will last forever because he dies young. Consequently, in Crossing the Bar, Tennyson says that his death is coming soon and that he is ready to cross over. However, the different rhyme schemes of the poems help establish a different tone in each one like, less serious tone for To An Athlete Dying Young and a more serious tone for Crossing the Bar.
“Ex-basketball Player” seems to have a more negative tone than “To an Athlete Dying Young.” Though, both a talk about former athlete’s glorious past when the runner in the first dies and the athlete in the second retired. In the poem ‘To an Athlete Dying Young” the runner dies at a young age of natural causes even though his fame does not but while in “Ex-Basketball Player” the fame of Flick washes away in his growing of age. The tone of “To an Athlete Dying Young” overall is much more positive since the poet praises the young athlete as "smart" to leave a world where glory does not remain and can only vanish. Both these poems do indeed have unique interpretations, depending on the reader. However, the methods that the two great poets used to make send those powerful messages are sometimes similar, but in this case largely different. Once one looks past the similarities of man entering water, the two poems have entirely different stories to tell, in very contrasting ways. Each poet has used effective diction, as well as very striking symbolism and imagery. The fact that they are different just shows how many ways there are to write a great poem, the only thing needed in common is the desire, feeling and will.

In the poem “To an Athlete Dying Young” the author uses rhyme to show the readers how the glory of the runner came and went in a dramatic way. By having rhyme in “To an Athlete Dying Young” it allows the irony in the poem and the meaning that poet A. E. Housman is trying to convey, really stick with the readers. In stanza three, “away” and “stay” and “grows” and “rose” make that stanza really stay put in the mind of the readers.
Throughout his villanelle, “Saturday at the Border,” Hayden Carruth continuously mentions the “death-knell” (Carruth 3) to reveal his aged narrator’s anticipation of his upcoming death. The poem written in conversation with Carruth’s villanelle, “Monday at the River,” assures the narrator that despite his age, he still possesses the expertise to write a well structured poem. Additionally, the poem offers Carruth’s narrator a different attitude with which to approach his writing, as well as his death, to alleviate his feelings of distress and encourage him to write with confidence.
For example, Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” discusses the experiences of one man and how despite “A hundred years hence, or ever so many hundred years hence, others will see them,” (3293). This very line suggests that time and death as a result of time passing cannot subdue the eternity of experiences. Whitman even goes as far as to say “It avails not, time nor place - distance avails not, I am with you, you men and women of a generation, or ever so many generations hence,” (3293). Emily Dickinson’s also manifests the theme of deaths limits. Dickinson writes: “Because I could not stop for Death - He kindly stopped for me,” (3368). These lines suggest that death itself waited (or rather had to wait) for a time when he could intervene this woman. Subsequently, this would mean that death must abide by time and therefore limited by time itself. “We slowly drove- He knew not haste” (3368), also provides support for this idea. This line of the poem infers that death is unaware of the concept of faster thus clearly through his unknowing is bounded or limited once again. Two of the most renowned poets in American literature are Dickinson and Whitman. Their styles are so hard to define yet so easy to understand. The all too familiar swift liquid that is Dickinson is a decent put side by side to Whitman’s hearty melancholy. That being the case, through combination one realizes that both Whitman and Dickinson share the common theme of death’s limits in their work. While Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson 's works seem to be quite different, they share common themes, namely death and religion. Although the imagery in each poem is distinct, the similarity of message in both poems is evident. The poems are similar in that the narrator’s lives are empty and contain no passion for pursuing anything. Both poems suggest that a life where dreams of meaningless things are pursued will end without purpose or significance.

The obvious comparison between the three poems is the theme of death. Both poets, in these works and many others, display a fascination with the death of themselves as well as the death of peers, and loved ones. Both Frost and Dickinson experienced a great deal of death throughout each of their lives. Frost’s greatest loss was the death of his son, which is greatly depicted in his poem “Home Burial.” Dickinson suffered the loss of many friends and family. She spent a lot of her time in her room looking out upon the headstones of these people.
Tennyson brings out the agony felt by Ulysses at his old age, The influence of the Industrial age can be seen in Tennyson's usage of the word 'profits' in the very first line . The character calls himself 'idle' showing his disillusionment at this ripe stage of life .The "still hearth" and "the barren crags" symbolize death. He continues complaining about his hapless state and the reader begins to detect the shallowness of character of this otherwise larger than life legend. He is so self-centered and full of self pity that he shows scant respect for those close to him and those that he rules as seen in lines 4-5. His pride keeps him from calling himself old, in that many words ; He has to allude to his wife's age to let the reader in on his own advanced years.
