In the spring of 2016, 19 million people went to a restaurant. All of them confronted with the question, how much to tip? Many people believe that tipping is a way to reward a server for exceptional service, or to reprimand them for atrocious. However, with the way servers get paid, it is clear that this is not the case. Tipping at restaurants should get banned as it promotes poor business practices, raises ethical problems, and perpetuates discrimination.

Jonny Pugh from the University of Oxford explains that many businesses have implemented a recent development in tipping technology. He goes on to explain that “instead of leaving a jar on the till, some coffee shops and sandwich shops have started asking customers to press a button on an iPad to indicate how much they would like to tip”(Source A). This seems to put unnecessary pressure on the customer to tip. These businesses are manipulating social norms in a way that makes customers question where and when to tip. Consequently, tips are a supplement to what employers pay them, instead of a reward for good service. Sanjay Sanghoee of The Huffington Post says, “most customers are unaware of this reality and don’t tip for this reason but for good service. That means the real problem here is in the disconnect between employers and the public about what tips are really for.”(Source C). The fact that customers are typically unaware of what their tip actually does, they may feel that it is used as a reward system for their server. Furthermore, not everybody tips the same anyway. If a customer tips of less than 15-20% what right do they possess to seize that server’s money? They have the same amount of right to do that as they do to refuse to pay the bill. People are consumed with their own reality that they didn’t even acknowledge me sitting at a table watching them. Each person seemed to have their own stories different from everyone else’s. For the most part, the employees seemed to have similar interests in wanted to produce the best customer service. Brian Palmer’s “Tipping is an Abomination”, he tries to reach out to all types of audiences. He attempts to appeal to the emotional side to each audience. He often states that tipping “perpetuates” racism. African-Americans, on average, tip 3% less points than a white customer would have tipped. The tipping gap between Caucasian and Hispanics is even smaller. This fact can affect racial groups greatly. He also shows that this gives restaurant serves an excuse to serve different ethnic groups over other groups. This can anger others to know that they will be served differently and will not get the same respect from their server solely based on their ethnicity. The dining experience in America is a completely unique one. We all rely on our waiter or waitress when we go out to a sit down restaurant to take care of our needs. Many people do not realize the amount of work their server does for them in the hour they sit at that table, causing servers to be grossly under paid in comparison to other tipped professions. Server minimum wage should be raised because it is inconsistent payment, it is a poorly understood tradition, and it is a contributing factor in the stress levels of the servers.

The idea of tipping has always been normal to myself, as I was a kid and still now I see my parents leaving tips for the waiter/waitress when we go out to eat. It never occurred to me until I got older that it was hard for these workers to get by as their salary depended upon their tips. Once I read Saru Jayaraman’s article on “Why Tipping is Wrong” I was unsure of what I was getting myself into. However, it brought light and told how we should be getting rid of tips and giving the workers a fair and decent salary.
Millennials might become the generation that die before their parents, and it is because of health related issues. The U.S begun this unhealthy downwards spiral in the 70’s when kids started coming home to empty houses, and working people would come home very late and tired. People needed an alternative to cooking that was fast and cheap, which is where the processed food industry began and exploded. Now, most people would believe that the food industry is the most culpable. However, that person should have learned personal responsibility. This generation of 18 to 26 year olds could be the solution to this problem. Millennials are going to be the future parents and lawmakers who could improve the way health is viewed here in the United States. In order to fix this problem of obesity and obesity related diseases, millennials must take personal responsibility and make healthier choices, as well as pass on what they learn to future generations.

When Tommy, Harry, and Dick were later seen at home, Dick was furious about his son’s receiving spare change. Tommy explained that it was by fault, however once they saw the outcome of receiving the change, they became motivated. Their explanation to Dick reinforced that he must realize that tipping incentivizes employees, it’s a reward for good service. Tipping employees motivates them to work harder, providing the customer with better service as well.
Fast food restaurant chains are a popular and convenient choice for eating on the go in our modern society. There are certainly several positive aspects to fast food establishments, but are the potential health detriments and collective negative effects on society worth it? Or would it be better to support locally owned and operated restaurants? When entering a restaurant, I usually expect to leave full, satisfied, and wanting to come back again. I believe that many people expect the same thing. The way people react to service can be very different from person to person. Depending on the way the customers are feeling, or the way that the server is feeling can be a big factor for the way service comes across. Service is an important part of everyone’s lives because majority of the jobs that people preform are service related. Poor service is an unfortunate part of life that everyone comes across. The way that I react to the poor service I receive is important and can change in the blink of an eye. Whether I react in an outspoken way, by getting loud and voicing my opinion. Or if I react in a quiet or apologetic way, it can affect my server, and the people around me, and myself.
As a waitress, I worked there part-time. My basic salary was $10 a day plus tips. Tips were paid daily and basic salary was paid every half a month. I get about $40 for tips everyday for 12 hours working from 1:00pm to 1:00am and I have to stand all day except 15 minutes’ sitting down for dinner. I got less tips than others because I’m new here. Still, that’s not a satisfying salary.

Food service plays a major role in institutional establishments like schools, hospitals, prisons and meals on wheels. They cater to the tastes of their particular customers and are often leaders of food innovation. In the food service, we find: bartenders, wait staff, hosts, busboys, chefs, cooks, managers, and dishwashers .The food service workers perform a variety of customer service, food preparation and cleaning tasks, all that which are very important to keep a business running. More concerning , some of the major working conditions that foodservice workers face with daily is no health benefits and significantly low wages. These employees working in the food industry make it possible for millions of people to enjoy food in restaurants but are not being treated or appreciated fairly.
