Time Management and Learning Styles
In a society where life seems to be a race against time for many, time is precious. Going to nursing school has allowed me to explore the nurse’s role. Consequently, I think of time management more than ever. There is no doubt that managing time wisely is fundamental when caring for multiple patients. However, efficient time distribution is important in all aspects. As a married, full-time college student who works part-time, I know that taking care of school, job, family, and housework as well as getting appropriate rest, nutrition, and having some leisure time seems too much to fit in 24 hours. This assignment has shed some light on my learning styles, benefits and challenges of online education, and time management. I have been able to explore strategies and elaborate an action plan to overcome my personal difficulties.
School work is where I currently spend most of my time. Any suggestions that allow me to learn smarter are welcome. Taking a quiz to discover my learning style, its weaknesses and strengths has been a great tool. According to its results, I am quite balanced between sensing and intuitive styles, visual and verbal, and sequential and global. On the other hand, it seems I tend to be a reflective learner over an active learner. Sometimes I learn better by taking action or applying and explaining concepts to others. However, I acknowledge I have predominantly learned using reflective style traits such as thinking through before acting, reading carefully, and memorizing several concepts (Felder & Soloman, n.d., “Active and Reflective learners”).

Prioritization and Time Management in Nursing Nursing can be particularly difficult and demanding and during the busy times and shifts some nurses might rarely have sufficient time to sit down or eat. A lot of nurses have a lot of things that they have to accomplish and have to be aware of ways to ask quick questions when it comes to the well-being and care of their patients. It is because nursing is increasingly high-paced and demanding that it becomes significantly critical for nursing professionals to learn ways to manage their times at work efficiently in order to decrease their levels of stress and ensure that the care they deliver is of high quality (Patterson, Ebright & Saleem, 2011). Improving the capacity of nurses to manage their times is significant, especially because it makes them become more efficient nurses, nurses who will be able to address the needs of a large number of patients within a short period. This does not usually translate to sacrificing the quality of patient care and the bedside manners of nurses; only that they have to complete the fundamental care they need within a short period.
Researchers agree on the fact that while there is no credible evidence that learning styles exist, neither is there evidence to the contrary (Reiner & Willingham, 2010). Different people have different preferences for learning, a fact that all researchers agree on. These preferences can be affected by an individual’s interests, abilities, and background knowledge (Reiner & Willingham, 2010). Studies show that while students have a preferred style of learning, if material is presented in another method, the learning is equivalent.

Each person has their own type of learning style. A learning style is a method in which each of us utilizes to better understand material. A preferred learning style is a style in which the person can learn best, reflecting their strengths and weaknesses of the individual. In order to understand material we take it all in with our senses, through sight, sound, touch, smell or taste. Multiple Intelligence theory maintains that there are at least seven learning styles (“intelligences”): interpersonal, intra-personal, body/kinesthetic, visual/spatial, mathematical/logical, verbal/linguistic and musical/rhythmic (Lazear, D.1991). For the purposes of this paper I will simplify the seven categories into three main categories in which people best learn information: auditory, visual and tactile/kinesthetic. Most people possess the ability to use all three learning styles but learn best using one specific learning style.
Throughout this chapter I have learned that there are several different learning styles, each relating to an individual’s learning ability. The Learning Styles Charts helps to determine an individual’s learning style. This chart measures three learning styles: visual learner (sees to learn), the auditory learner (hears to learn), and the kinaesthetic learner (moves to learn). An auditory learner prefers to learn or learns best by listening. This type of learner will be best able to perform a new task after listening to the instructions. The visual learner learns more easily by reading. All types of visual materials, pictures, symbols, colours, shapes text etc. make it easier for this type of learner to learn. The kinaesthetic – tactile learner likes the physical movement and learns best with the hands on approach (www.mytrainingbc.ca). After I completed some Learning Styles questionnaires I was categorized as having a mild preference towards the visual learning style. I would tend to agree with this assessment as I am a person who loves to read. I will always read the instructions
There are four dimensions of preferred learning style which is, active-reflective, sensing-intuitive, visual-verbal, and sequential-global. According to the results from online learning style assessment, I find my preferred learning style is more reflective compare to active because my intensity of reflective is 5. Usually, when I have an assignment, I rather think it through first and then try to understand the outline by myself. On the other hand, active learner tend to retain and understand information by doing some active with it, for example, in this case active learner tend to like have discussion with others and then start do the task. As a reflective learner, I always think it through first when I get a task. For example, when I was

Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.
Adjusting learning and studying strategies can be a fast easy way to improve a college grade from a B to an A. Through studies of learning styles I have been able to decipher my learning types. I am a visual learner, have an integrated brain, meaning I use both hemispheres, and ranked highest in bodily-kinesthetic and logic-mathematical intelligence.
The problem of time management can be said to be universal not only affecting students but also other people in careers. This problem is seen to transition from a person’s life from different cadres of his or her engagement specifically from home, school and at work. It is also a problem that is internal and not external.

By understanding your learning style, you can start seeing your strengths and weaknesses as a learner and decision maker as well as understand, predict, and improve educational achievement; improve vocational selection and sometimes placement (Clapp, 1993; Gul, 1992; Holland, 1973; Huelsman, 1983; Jacobson, 1993; Kolb, 1974; Sternberg, 1997). It is believed, however, that biases cannot be completely bypassed, and the effects of psychological factors will not disappear totally by any kind of learning. (Barberis and Thaler, 2003). But knowing your learning style and its weaknesses will help you be aware of the cognitive biases you can easily fall prey to and therefore, be more prepared.
When students are deciding on where to go to college, they have the option of choosing between online classes and the traditional classroom classes. Today, some students are finding it much easier to maintain a job, family and start a college career, all by taking online classes. Although some students still prefer to stick with the traditional classroom classes, they still have the option to take online classes. Both online and the traditional classes will provide the educational requirements needed to obtain a college degree and opportunities in the work field. Although the online classes offer just as much as the traditional classes, they are completely different when it comes to teaching methods, course material and time.

In the undergraduate educational setting, student proficiency and comfort with technology are stressed, but the essential mission of most undergraduate institutions (especially, liberal arts institutions such as Dartmouth) is on the development of the individual. The nurturing and supportive environment of most undergraduate institutions helps students mature and develop. The rave and fad of online undergraduate learning causes students to miss out on too many intangibles of an on-campus education. Our current theory on education hasn’t adequately dealt with the intricacies of a web-based education, and therefore the effectiveness of such is highly questionable.
The implementation of online learning in many universities has proven to be a successful method of course delivery (Regan, Evmenova, Baker, Jerome, Spencer, Lawson, & Werner, 2012). Dickson-Dean, Galyen, and Moore (2011) proposed that online learning can promote successful learning opportunities for students as well as rewarding benefits for all educational stakeholders.
