I love soccer, but there is always more to learn about it. Tim Howard is a down-to-earth American goalkeeper who admired millions worldwide after his amazing performance at the 2014 World Cup. Before I read “The Keeper” I would ask myself, what can I learn from his biography, and what else is there to know? “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it”-Harper Lee. This quote refers to how my perspective changed about Tim Howard after considering his viewpoint on things. He is now considered to be one of the best goalies in FIFA. No one can learn a skill without practicing and dedicating oneself toward his/her goal. Becoming a professional athlete requires continuous …show more content…
Tim was inspired after seeing a former athlete who also had TS Syndrome playing basketball on TV-Chris Jackson. I wanted to learn how he became a legendary goalkeeper, after living through such critical conditions where he would have to use a stove for heat, and suffer from TS Syndrome at the same time, but also how he became a successful professional soccer player while getting an education at the same time. “I despised school. I couldn’t sit still, couldn't focus, desperately wanted to be anywhere besides my desk”(19). Howard always had a difficult time in school, however it did not prevent him from playing soccer. This book teaches its audience a variety of lessons. One of the most important morals of this book is to follow your dreams and to not give up. “Criticism hurts. But nothing hurts more than knowing you could have done better”(129). Howard is a good example of not giving up because, while he was playing for Manchester United he felt uncomfortable because of the coach, but instead of quitting soccer, he simply transferred to Everton and began a new chapter in his life. He also emphasized the importance of having a good personality. Tim would always show respect toward his
When you train hard enough you can master or finesse a skill, therefore several people don't require training. Specific people are born with genetic enhancements that assist them with the skill and grants them an upper hand. David Epstein believes that genetics assist with the activity and does all of the work(Epstein,7). Malcom Gladwell believes that training pays off, moreover that if you train hard for plenty of hours you could surpass a prodigy(Gladwell,11). In Gladwell's writing Outliers, he talks about facts on how if you train for 10k hours you can master a skill. In Epstein's writing Sports Gene it revolves around a boy that was born with a genetic enhancement that doesn't train nevertheless is almost a pro without any training at
A Ticket out of the Past By (Teresa) Yung-Ching Chuang. Life is like an ascent, the more you climb, the higher you will get. J. C. Burke skilfully undertakes this philosophy as a source of inspiration for ‘The Story of Tom Brennan’. It is not another crazy adventurous tale with a heroic storyline that seems unrealistic; the novel is about individual representation as Burke insightfully illustrates the long and slow journey of Tom Brennan, navigating through his road of self-discovery that eventually leads to his destination and achieves his “ticket out of the past” (Burke, pg 182). The catalyst of the novel is a traumatic car accident causing two instant deaths and one paralysis.
He didn’t waste a minute and started training the next week, a month before the actual preseason practices began. He hired a personal trainer to help him get ready for the preseason. His trainer was a lot more vigorous than the trainers at college had been. As he trained, he concentrated on other things so that the pain wouldn’t get to his mind. Damian’s dream had always been to be a star soccer player and to make his parents happy. The...

The only reason some athletes make it to college is due to scholarships for their performance on the field. If they don’t perform well on the field, that scholarship might get cut. This makes practicing the athletes a main priority. However, college athletes have to concentrate on their grades so they don’t drop out of college. These athletes know they may not make it to the pro’s, so they know they have to have a back-up plan.

The main focus of Geoff Colvin’s article, “ What It Takes To Be Great”, published by Fortune magazine on October 30, 2006 is research on what it takes to be great. Colvin notes that the researchers were first curious why what really separates world class performers from everybody else and that led them to study elite performers such as Michael Jordan. While may believe that natural talent is needed to be great, the researchers and Colvin conclude that greatness is only achieved through deliberate practice. Deliberate practice includes having the right mindset and doing the activity in order to get better, not just to get it done, setting specific goals beyond one's current ability, practicing well consistently and with high levels of repetition
In Ayn Rand’s writings, the character of Howard Roark in The Fountainhead represented her first complete presentation of a moral ideal. In this novel, Howard Roark was more than an architect who formulated his own style; he was the epitome of objectivism.
To be a pro-athlete takes work, but how much work? Is it Brain or is it bulk that will make you be successful in sports? The stories “What could Be Better than a Touchdown, by Kelefa Sanneh, and “why we run”, by Bernd Heinrich, both compare athleticism to dealing with your mind, or in other words they both convey the idea that Mental Strength is much more important than agility. In fact, Agility and Physical Prowess are almost nothing compared to Mental Strength.
God used seven days to create the world; Tim, the main character in Seven Pounds, extends seven lives by donating his seven organs or properties to them. The name of the film refers to The Merchant of Venice, which was written by Shakespeare. One of the central characters in that play, Antonio, asks for a pound of flesh as payment for a loan that is owed him. Tim Thomas has taken seven lives in a single car accident, so he needs to repay the debt with his "flesh". Since Aristotle says that, a tragedy needs to be in a dramatic form with incidents arousing pity and fear, the movie is a brilliant tragedy, according to Tim’s morality, his impossible love and his death at the end.
For example, Michael Jordan, who wasn't a natural athlete, was the hardest working athlete in the history of sports, according to the book. Former Bulls assistant coach John Bach said he was “a genius who constantly wants to upgrade his genius”. Growth mindset: athletes focus on learning about themselves and also their opponents. Like a growth mindset student, growth mindset athletes care about learning rather than getting better grades or winning. For example, they study deeply, manage their time wisely, and keep their motivation.
To be an athlete, one must have the want to become a great athlete. Without practice and work hard, it will show
My intent is to properly explain how to play a sport the different things that are required to play any the many sports out there. Learning a sport takes time, and the ability to be coachable in whatever sport you might do. In every sport your coach gives you tips on how to improve on different attributes that may help you better yourself as an athlete. These tips that are given and learned, help improve the overall ability that you have in the sport. In learning these skills you are cognitive, associative, and autonomous which help you the skills you learned and use them effectively. These theories all have something to do with process of learning that takes place in any sport played.
Surprisingly, physical skills are only a small factor of the sport. The mental aspect of the sport needs to come into play, because the physical aspect can only take you so far. A lot of
Millions of children worldwide participate in a multitude of sports, either in school or outside of school. As they grow older, they get better, but some of them stop playing. We have discussed that the best and sometimes oldest of the kids (in their age groups) are given more chances and more opportunities, as well as better coaching. This results in them gaining more experience and practice. Ultimately, some of them end up being national or world-class athletes competing and representing their country. In order for that to happen, they have to be recognized as talented and be presented with a chance to become great.
