Mindset: The Psychology Of Success: How We Can Learn To Fulfill Our Potential Carol Susan Dweck is a psychology professor at Stanford University. She is well known for her popular psychology book called “Mindset” to the public. Before joining Stanford University, she was faculty at the University of Illinois, Harvard and Columbia. She earned her doctoral degree in psychology at Yale University and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and won awards for her contributions to developmental psychology, to social psychology, and to education. A growth mindset is a desire to learn, which leads to embracing challenges, persisting obstacles and learning from criticism. This is a summary of chapter one and two. Now let's learn how we can apply this in schools and in our accomplishments. There are huge differences between a fixed mindset student and a growth mindset student. For example, a fixed mindset student reads the textbook and their class notes. If the material is hard, they read it again or they try to memorize everything they can. While the growth mindset students completely took charge of their learning and motivation such as, understanding and applying principles across lectures, learning from previous exam mistakes, maintaining interest in material and staying positive. In my opinion, people with a growth mindset value learning more than grades. Their critiques were different compared to fixed mindset students. Even if they lost and learned something from their mistakes, it is a success. For example, Michael Jordan, who wasn't a natural athlete, was the hardest working athlete in the history of sports, according to the book. Former Bulls assistant coach John Bach said he was “a genius who constantly wants to upgrade his genius”. Growth mindset: athletes focus on learning about themselves and also their opponents. Like a growth mindset student, growth mindset athletes care about learning rather than getting better grades or winning. For example, they study deeply, manage their time wisely, and keep their motivation. It is not only working hard, but it is also putting effort, dedication and passion into it. The key is putting effort into and enjoying the process. Also, Dweck talks about how learning from your mistakes helps you grow. For example, when facing challenges and set back, by embracing your mistakes and comforting your deficiencies. Our mindset also shapes our relationships. Dweck argues that a fixed mindset and growth mindset explains why some relationships with our partners, family and friends last longer.
