Substance abuse is very common among adults and many people have parents suffering from this disease. This not only has an effect on the parent in need of help, but also on their children. This issue is a recurring cause of child abuse and neglect. Donna F. Gill, the author of Identifying Child Abuse, a clinically reviewed article, defines child abuse and neglect as "any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm." Studies report higher rates of both physical and sexual abuse among alcohol abusers than in the general population, This voice of concern can …show more content…
This story is about a son striving for his mother's attention. In this story we read “ “ At moments of failure, when he cloned to claim his mother's attention, it was with just this grave, embarrassed inspection that she rewarded him. Through his hot shame, feeling the pleading grin on his face like a scar he could never remove.. These are the same emotions a child might feel when they feel neglected by their parents due to the parent being overcome by a substance. The next stimulus we can connect to this issue is called Confrontation on the Bridge by Jacob Lawrence. In “Confrontation on the Bridge,” Jacob Lawrence paints an image that shows multiple people conveying the feeling of fear, uncertainty, and unwillingness to overcome the obstacle that is ahead of them, the predator. This predator is stopping them from crossing the bridge. This image may be intertwined with the same feeling of fear adults may be instilled with, and stopping them from overcoming their obstacle of substance abuse to advance their journey of life. In Confrontation on the Bridge, the people represent the parents struggling with drugs and feeling stuck in that place of their life, just as the people crossing the bridge feel stuck since a terrifying-looking animal is facing them. The predator represents the drugs or substances being abused. Drugs can make someone feel like there is nowhere to go and that they are stuck with them forever and will eventually be consumed by them. They stop someone from living their life and stop them from continuing on their journey, just like how the animals are blocking the people from crossing the bridge and continuing to their
One day Gabi went into the garage and her father was lying unconscious on the ground with a pipe in his hand. He had died. She called the police and everything but it was no use, his death was caused by a meth overdose. Nevertheless Gabi faced her father’s death with grace and courage. His death had inspired her to read poetry in front of people, something she never could do before. The poem was about him and how nobody knew what it was like to have a dad who was a meth addict, watching him deteriorate day after day. Gabi kept saying over and over “ But you don’t know my dad.” Yet she fought through the tough times and became even stronger because of the trials she faced.
There is a total of “970000 children(Children, Lambie-Sias)” under the age of 17 in the U.S. that are living with a parent or guardian who abuses alcohol. The guardian or parent put a lot of psychological hurt on these children, but typically it’s due to the fact that the parent has a coexisting psychiatric disorder. You can generally tell if the COAs (Children of Alcoholics) by certain indicators they show. They normally are always late, they don’t really care about their physical appearance, they could be really excited during the day but once it’s time to go home seem down in the dumps because they don’t want to return home to see their parent or guardian abuse alcohol. More psychological problems or indicators you can see are when the child has trouble controlling their mood and behavior, during the day they will show disobedient behavior, random outbreaks of their emotions, on normal day’s basis this child is known as the “class clown”. “Psychosomatic Responses(Children, Lambie-Sias)” this child will show during the school day are due to the emotional hurt they are feeling so they will confirm this by “physical symptomlogy (Children, Lambie-Sias)”, headaches and complaint of stomachs are usually what they will tell a teacher or nurse is wrong with them and these normally have unexplainable causes. The majority of the time these children, convey what
This story makes the reader wonder, why must parents do this to their children, what kinds of motifs do they have for essentially ruining their child’s life. I believe
the terrible favor life has done for the father and exposes the idea of running away from his life. The first
Dave lost his identity while he was being abused. It was as if he was a robot going through the chores his mother gave him. He tried to persist in pleasing her to keep her from getting angry, but nothing that Dave did could please her or make her happy. He tried hard everyday to keep his hope that he would be rescued, alive, yet no one could help him, and no one was there to help him. His own family, his own blood, wouldn’t help him. He tried to get help, but every time, he was caught and severely punished. The fear he felt around her was palpable and overpowering, and it is this fear that kept him from trying to run again.
It is not always easy to steer a child towards the right path, sometimes they do as they please, and sometimes it is the parents that make a mistake. No sons or daughters truly understand their parents’ choices until they have reached maturity. For example, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel Frankenstein can be interpreted as a metaphor of a kid defying his parents’ wishes and going into a teenage crisis asserting his rights over them. If the novel is deconstructed we can identify the different stages of the creature’s life mirroring the stages towards adulthood; First there is the first actions of the child and how the parent reacts to it, in second there is the learning phase where he acquires awareness of his surroundings and consequences of his actions and third is the child’s revolt against the authority figure as he attains maturity and finally the reconciliation between father and son as the wrong is being atoned for.
Through suffering, one finds meaning in one’s life. Another choice Andrew makes is talking to his dad, a psychologist, about the accident, which put his mother in a wheelchair. Because of this incident, a huge metaphorical rift is formed between the two. Andrew knows that his dad never truly forgave him of this accident, and placed him on medication. Even so, he tells his father about his feelings.
In the United States, twenty million children are experiencing physical, verbal and emotional abuse from parents who are addicted to alcohol. Growing up in an alcoholic house can leave emotional scars that may last a lifetime. This is tragic because we consider that childhood is the foundation on which our entire lives are fabricated. When a child’s efforts to bond with an addicted parent are handicapped, the result is confusion and intense anxiety. In order to survive in a home deficient, of healthy parental love, limits, and consistency, they must develop “survival skills” or defense mechanisms very early in life.

Child abuse can come in many shapes in forms. There are four different kinds of abuse that I will be encountering in my research paper; they are physical, mental, emotional, and neglect. Most abuse is from neglect and net from physical. The category under physical also brings in the sexual abuse. (Do Something) Drug addicted babies also can qualify under the category of emotional and mental category. Two of the main questions in this paper are what is child abuse and what are drug addicted babies lives like. It turns out that babies lives do get affected majorly after the age of four, we’ll learn more about that later though. (Kronstadt, 2013)
Poverty, addictions and mental health all contribute to this frightening social problem in the United States. Childhelp has a unique three step approach to helping end, as well as treat child abuse and neglect. First, programs exist to prevent the cycle of abuse. This is important because 30% of abused and neglected children will go on to be an abuser. Second, Childhelp has an intervention program that is dedicated to interceding and removing children from abusive and dangerous situations. Childhelp states that 80% or more of children who die from child abuse or neglect are younger than age five and therefore unable to remove themselves from living in danger. Lastly, Childhelp has a treatment program designed to give children a safe place to fall, with love, while equipping them with the tools needed to move forward from their hurtful pasts (Childhelp,
In “On the Bridge” by Todd Strasser, Seth wants to be “cool” and be friends with Adam. Seth does everything to be like Adam. He tries to make his denim jacket look old, worn, and look like it survived many fights, just to be “cool”. One day, Seth and Adam are hanging out and are smoking cigarettes on a bridge. After Adam finishes smoking, he throws the cigarette butt over the edge of the bridge and it lands on the windshield of a car. When the owners of the car ask who did it, Seth didn't want to say that it was Adam because it wouldn’t be “cool”. But, Adam didn’t really care and blamed it on Seth. Seth got punished for “doing” it and wound up with blood every where. After the fight, Seth goes home and throws away his jacket, basically throwing
When children are involved in a family structure that abuses alcohol or drugs an array of dysfunction becomes evident. Children might be subjected to child maltreatment, child abuse, physical/sexual abuse, or neglect, among many other inappropriate parenting practices. The alarming statistics of children that
The afternoon was slowly fading into the evening and I had gone the whole day without the figure of my aspiration, my father. I impatiently paced the floor in front of the door like a stalking cat waiting to pounce on its prey. The thoughts of wrestling my father and hear those words of affirmation, “You got me! Mercy! I give up!” filled my head. My father was obviously faking it but there was something about his words that have such power over a young boys life. Mothers are sources of comfort and safety for a young boy but it is the father that defines the identity of a young boy, the father bestows manhood on the boy.
