My chosen health behavior is eating because I want to start eating breakfast and want to moderate the amount of junk food I eat daily. In Health Psychology: An Introduction to Behavior and Health, it is discussed that the maintenance of weight depends on two factors, “the number of calories absorbed through food intake and the number expended through body metabolism and physical activity.” (Brannon, Feist, & Updegraff, 2014). Not considering other external or health problems, weight ultimately relies on the host and their behaviors. On Thursday, April 26 I ate the food I had packed that morning instead of buying my regular bagel at Phoenix Grill. And on Saturday, April 28 I attempted to have breakfast by eating a muffin and milk. It was not much of a surprise that I did not eat breakfast during my three-day observation because I rarely ever eat breakfast. Brannon et al., emphasize that, “adolescents whose schools are located within half a mile of fast-food restaurant experience an increased likelihood of being overweight compared to those without a fast-food restaurant so close to their school.” (Brannon, Feist, & Updegraff, 2014). I am not overweight but, I am certainly not healthy. Yet, this statement became very clear to me while I was creating the coding sheet and noticed that I tend to eat a lot of junk and processed food when I am at school and with friends or family. For example, I do not worry about forgetting to pack lunch for school because I know that I have easy access to other foods, like Subway, Panda Express, and Chick-fil-A, since they are less than 3-5 minutes away from my classes. I also do eat more junk and processed foods during the weekends because I am surrounded by family members that like to eat out or have the occasional cook-out. For example, On Saturday night, I decided to eat at 11pm because I saw other people eating and was surrounded by food. I have low-self control and in some sense fell to peer pressure. And, not having ate since 5pm that day did not
One of the leading factors to obesity is everyone's eating habits. The world continues to move at a faster pace forcing everyone to lack the availability to sit down and enjoy a healthy homemade meal. It becomes more difficult every day to get into the habit of eating good when we are so use to our normal bad eating habits.
Schools with enormous food courts where students can buy meals and drinks from commonly known franchises, such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola, are the schools with the most health problems. Fast-food franchises are showing up everywhere, but do these businesses belong in high schools? No! Schools are here to enlighten students for life after school. If high schools promote bad eating habits by placing fast-food franchises in their cafeterias, then how can students eat right and healthy beyond high school.
Obesity in the United States, which the media has labeled a national crisis, has also been connected to poverty rates. Big fast food industry’s target poor communities, and spend millions of dollars each year to create advertising that appeals to these specific areas. These industry’s also target naïve children when advertising because they know that eating habits developed in childhood are usually carried into adulthood. Children who are exposed to television advertisements for unhealthy food and who are not educated well enough on good nutrition will grow up and feed their families the same unhealthy foods they ate as kids. A big way fast food giants are able to make certain young people have access to unhealthy food is by strategically placing franchises in close proximity to schools. They will often place three times as many outlets within walking distance of schools than in areas where there are no schools nearby. It is thought that we live in an obesogenic environment due to an interaction of environmental, developmental and cultural influences. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension”
How many obese children have you seen today? Obesity is one of the largest health problems Americans are currently facing. It can lead to many baleful complications, including heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, cancer, mobility issues, high blood pressure, bullying, and lack of self-esteem. According to the CDC, about 17% of children and adolescents aged 2-19 are obese, and 30% are overweight. In adults, around 70% are overweight and 30% are obese. Nevertheless, our nation’s public schools are continuously promoting virulent foods through its lunch programs and on-campus advertisements. Although I understand that unhealthy food is cheaper and tastier, we must remember that those foods are causing our nation’s children to become obese. Factors such as cheap unhealthy foods in school lunches, junk food ads in schools, and teachers eating pernicious foods in class are causing more and more children to make the easy choice, the unhealthy choice. Obesity is a growing epidemic in the U.S, one that we need to promptly eradicate.

One of the big reasons that children and teens are overweight is because of the foods that they eat. They are fed these fattening and unhealthy foods by the school system. In the Bio Analogics article it states that nearly two-thirds of residents of United States are overweight, and since 1991 the incidence of obesity has risen from 12 percent to more than 25 percent. This is due to the amount of junk food and burgers, we ate daily. To see if I am also one of these fast food consuming eaters, I composed a diary of what I eat daily and I discovered that within my weekly schedule, that’s between school and work- I eat hamburgers at least three times a week. I ate these burgers not just from one place, I ate them from four different places. The first one I ate was at In-and-Out. The second one was at Fuddruckers. The fourth day I had one in McDonalds and on the sixth day in which my friends and I went to Applebee’s after work and I still had the nerve to order a hamburger even when there were other items on the menu.
