What is a hero? Do they put the bad guys in jail and make the community a better place? There are many ways to define what a hero is and who is worthy to be called a hero. Bill Gates is an international hero. Son of a successful lawyer, and whose mother was a businesswoman, expectations for Bill were surely high. Since the age of 13 he created several programs some that included hacking his school’s computer system, and some for his school, which included one that was able to collect every teacher’s attendance. After attending Harvard University for two years he dropped out with his high school alongside classmate Paul Allen, who attended Washington State University. Three traits that make Bill Gates worthy to be called a hero are his passion …show more content…
After high school, he still kept in contact with his good high school friend Paul Allen.Gates and Allen contacted a computer company name MITS from New Mexico, claiming they were working on a software name Basic that would run their new computer Altair. However in reality neither of them had began to code anything for the computer company. They did not have an Altair computer that would allow them to test their codes. Gates and Allen spent “the next two months writing the software at Harvard 's computer lab. Allen traveled to Albuquerque for a test run at MITS, never having tried it out on an Altair computer. It worked perfectly.” (Biography.com). Gates’ and Allen’s gamble on contacting MITS claiming they developed a software they had not yet started, illustrates that both do not fear failure. Instead they seeked challenges that would drive them forward and allow them to become the best they could …show more content…
Not only has he promised to do that in the future, but he has also done that in the past. As of now, “ He and his wife Melinda have so far given away $28 billion via their charitable foundation, more than $8 billion of it to improve global health” (Telegraphy: Bill Gates interview: I have no use for money. This is God’s work). This is, why Gates along with his wife Melinda founded their own organization in exchange to give back the wealth they are blessed with, back to the world in an effective way. They took another step in the right direction by supporting the Giving Pledge. As Gates issued this statement when he became part of the Pledge, “We have committed a vast majority of our assets to the Bill and Melinda Foundation to help stop preventable diseases… and to tear down other barriers to health and education that prevent people from making the very most of their lives” (Giving Pledge:Bill Gates). Some may say Gates does this charitable work because he receives tax breaks from the government. Although this may be true, the amount of money Gates has donated to the contribution of improving people’s lives is priceless. One can’t simply say tax cuts are worth more than improving an individual 's life. That individual is receiving access to education they did not have access to before, better medication to treat a disease, or simply the ability
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example
Throughout all of the work Bill Gates has done in his life, he is able to have the traits of a Renaissance man. Bill was one of the founders of Microsoft, a computer software company. This makes him
A hero is someone who invests their time helping others rather than themselves. They are always conscious of their surroundings and environment. Heroes help their enemies and friends regardless of the circumstances. A hero is also someone who is humble and knows when to be protective of others and themselves. Heroes are people who acknowledge flaws, and fix mistakes, those were my own definition of a hero. In “Undocumented Immigrant”, Jose Antonio Vargas tells the truth about his illegal status in the United States. Not only was he an immigrant in the United States, he was his own hero. Vargas proved that he is a hero through code switching, bravery and honesty.
After having helped found what would be the world’s most popular and largest software company in 1975, Bill Gates officially found himself to be the richest man alive at the ripe, young age of only thirty-one. Gates had never imagined that the thirteen year old boy who loved to program computers in his parent’s garage would one day find himself to be considered the world’s wealthiest man alive, having a total net worth of $76 billion. Having began on his own, tinkering with computers and computer software, Gates later created the seed of Microsoft, or what was originally called Traf-O-Data in the summer of 1972. (Fast Facts) It wasn’t until two years later, with the help of his co-founder, Paul Allen that Microsoft was born, transforming the technological world in ways that the people had never seen. The birth of Microsoft changed the ways of old computers, making way for faster newer and more innovative technology, along with bringing on a strong competition with their rival company, Apple Inc. With this grand cooperation, Bill Gates was also accumulating a large mass of money, gradually finding himself to top the charts of the Forbes World Billionaires List. (Fast Facts) Despite being well known for his contributions to Microsoft, Bill Gates’ most profound impact on the American culture was in medical and educational advances provided by The Gates foundation, paralleled by his philanthropic views and aid in the lives of the both poor and wealthy.
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.
What is a hero? A hero is someone who has achieved many goals in their life; someone admired for his impressive exploits; or someone who shows tremendous courage. A hero controls a great deal of power of authority, or strong influence over others. When people envision a hero, they usually think of a champion, a paragon, a conqueror, or a celebrity. Jimmy Connors represented all these qualities. He displayed power when he was on the tennis court, and he asserted his force off the court. Mr. Connors is a dominant, influential powerhouse.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a hero is an individual who is admired for great bravery or fine qualities. To me a hero is so much more than a person who shows great bravery. When I think of a hero many fine qualities come to mind; intelligence, courage, altruism, compassion and great bravery.
Gates for his commitment to help the people who have been suffering from infectious diseases. Dr. Gates has been known as one of the world’s great philanthropists, who have made extraordinary donations to various charitable organizations and scientific programs around the world. Even it was a commencement speech, Dr. Gates truthfully wanted to share about his thoughts and concerns for the unfortunate victims of infectious diseases. In his speech, he had sincerely informed and persuaded the audiences to take action to solve the alarming issues. Dr. Gates confessed, “As I left Harvard with no real awareness of the awful inequities in the world-the appalling disparities of health, and wealth, and opportunity that condemn millions of people to lives of despair” (Powell,
What is a hero? That is the question that has many different answers depending on who you ask. There are some pretty popular answers to that question. One of those answers is; “A hero is someone who helps other people, or helps to make other people's lives better.” Another is; “A hero is a person who tries to make the world a better place.” or “A hero is a person who does something that is more than what is expected.” Still others are “A hero is someone that doesn't do something for his or her own problems but for the benefit of others” and “A hero is a person that doesn't want to be a hero just to be famous.” Those were just some statements about what people think a hero is, but what about the qualities a hero should have?
