I can relate to the characters in Robert Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays”. My dad has always been a hard working person. He has always provided for his family, not just our needs but our wants as well. He has taught me to work hard and appreciate everything we have. He has also taught me to be respectful and treat people the right way. I will always appreciate everything he has done for our family through the years. The character “Mama” in Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” reminds me a lot of my mother. She is hard working women, and she tries to teach her kids the right way. She has sacrificed for her family every day of her life. I have greatly benefited for both of my parents guidance, but not everybody is as lucky as I have been. In Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” Connie is a disobedient teen who has not received any parental guidance in her life. She has been neglected, and she is on a path that will lead her to her demise. …show more content…

The father takes care of his family and shows that he cares about them. The narrator states, “Who had driven out the cold/ and polished my good shoes” (Hayden lines 11-12). This quote shows the father as a caring individual, and also somebody who goes over the top for his family. Through these actions the father is displaying guidance to his son, and showing him what it takes to be a good man in this world. At the end of the poem the son has grown up and is realizing what his father was teaching him. The narrator states, “What did I know, what did I know/ of loves austere and lonely/ offices?” (Hayden lines 13-14). The boy’s feelings have changed and are now aware of everything his father was teaching
